Just smile
Oct. 26th, 2024 08:09 pmSo I’m back from the Birmingham trip, which was in some ways sucessful in some ways not.
I went pretty early and getting there was ok. I did consider stopping off in town to pop to the Smyths to get the Lego polybag they were giving out, but I just couldn’t be bothered with the extra trouble. So instead I just started some of I Want a that Twink Obliterated. I mostly read the introduction which was fun and a lil of the first story (I couldn’t on the way back cause I was standing for a good chunk so I will tomorrow.
At the station I went in the Smiths and got the latest Kerrang (it has Andy from BVB but I dunno why I got it cause I’ve not heard them in so long) and looked for SFX. This was the main failing of the day. I hoped to find the Halloween Terrifier issue somewhere but, despite going everywhere, I couldn’t find one (so if anyone 8n the uk spots it please get it for me, I’ll gladly pay cause it’s out of stock online and is £30 on eBay which… ugh).
On the plus side I got the Krispy Kreme birthday donut ok which was nice.
First forbidden planet was next, which said it had a Halloween event instore but it was a bit… eh. There didn’t seem to be the promised discounts or anything (just the usual ones) and the lady at the till didn’t even seem to know that she was meant to give me a ticket for buying stuff (so just gave me sweets, which yay sweets but still). I got the Alien Romulus prequel comic (which I read on the way back and it was pretty good! In true alien fashion there is one sane woman who everyone ignores, though she does also doom everyone so…) and I got two funkos, Qimir from the acolyte (who is out of stock everywhere, I almost got Yord too but figured I could in a few weeks) and I also got a reduced Man-Thing (called Ted). I didn’t even know he was in Werewolf By Night so that gives me more reason to watch at last! I did get two of the Halloween free comics, a Star Wars one and Venom one.
Then I went in a few places but didn’t get much. I got a Princess Leia puzzle from TK, a game called Sojourner from the Game outlet (for 79p!) and a Halloween mystery bag. I only opened it at the station and it has some Halloween tights, a wind up hand and test tube drinking things (which look pretty cool).
This leads to another thing, there was hardly any Halloween stuff about. I hoped to get a Halloween crafty thing cause I’ve not been in the spirit as much. Alas I found nothing. Even worse, the Christmas market is already set up ready to go. It’s not open yet but still. Ugh.
Next was the other forbidden planet and I got some nice things there. I got some recent Star Wars comics (the first 2 The Battle Of Jakku ones, including a phantom menace cover and an Ewok knew). But the other things that I got reduced were better. I picked up the Henry funko that was reduced last time (despite not seeing him in Stranger Things yet), a Pyke soldier black series (I wanted causa Solo but also Outlaws) but the last two were the best. There was a fancy Star Wars pop up advent calendar for £4.99! (I had a similar Nightmare Before Christmas one and it was so nice) and there was an Agatha Harkness figure for less than half off! There was only one of her so I carried her all around the store when I saw her. (I did have to go back cause the tags weren’t deactivated right) they also had the Halloween comics which was a surprise so I got one of each so I did get the full set after all.
Then I went in hmv, again to search for SFX. All I got was a steampunk skull asking Alexandria tee and Smile (the blu ray was cheap when you bought something). But this brings me to another annoyance, I hoped to get a stranger thing thing for my friend but there was hardly anything around which is so strange cause hmv had bigger sections last time.
Another annoyance, I went in game hoping they’d have the Lego sets for the price online but alas nope. Then again the prices online were ludicrous (the new animal crossing ones were half off) so maybe they were mistakes to begin with.
I had noms which was a bit disappointing. I had a Halloween McFlurry with my food but it was eh. The rest of the food was good though.
Before the film I went in the bullring, I got the Lego Halloween set from a very busy lego store (they had face painting) and was amused by the guy behind me having the sets I had on my birthday. Also a+ choice having the new Lord of the rings tower on display right as you come in, it’s so impressive. Then I got halted chocolate to use bpm code. I got some Halloween chocolates to try and, bonus, they had samples of the new fire and ice chocolate which was nice. I also found an SFX, but it was the Agatha All Along one which I later found was last months so why it was still out I dunno.
Then I went to the cinema for the film. I got a free freebies going in (a poster for venom, a model of the robot from wild robot and something from transformers). There was a load of trailers.
*LOTR War Of The Rhohirrum (spelled badly no doubt): it looks so damn pretty, I wanna see
*The monkey - looks like it could be promising, but could also be a bit much, still I’m curious
*Kraven - looks a bit… eh, but then that could be cause I’m not fussed on Krvaen as a whole
*The wolfman - could be good, could not be I’m not sure
*Nosferatu - feels like it nails the atmosphere so I might watch just not at cinemas
*Companion (could be companionship?) - I’m kinda curious, but I dunno
*Heretic - Honestly I’m curious about Hugh Grant in a horror role, though the religious symbolism could be a bit much.
Thoughts on Smile 2 under the cut, though not major spoilers

I went straight to the station, got past the barrier and… missed the train, so was stuck there for half an hour. It didn’t help that wi fi was spotty so I couldn’t let more know and there was no food that seemed appealing. Then the train was busy (though I did eventually get to sit and read Alien Romulus) and worse, when I got back I had to pick up dog food which weighed heavy and made me tired.
Now I’m gonna flop and maybe watch something spooky but maybe just snuggle. Tomorrow I’m gonna watch the ghost stories on bbc4, plus Alex Kingston reading Frankenstein which I’ve been curious about. And hopefully I can work on stuff too.
