A simple plan

So like I mentioned the other day I wanted to see Alien Romulus but my choice was seeing it in town (meaning I’d have to walk back home at 9pm) or going to Birmingham (which I knew would be a money sink).
After some pondering I decided on the latter, going to Birmingham yesterday (so I was out from about 10:20am till 6:15pm), which was a pretty long day.
One thing I was looking for in Birmingham, but not expecting to see, was The Acolyte stuff. I knew there was a Kelnacca comic so there’d at least be that, but also the funkos were meant to be out today so I thought they might be early. I hoped, but didn’t expect, to see the black series figures (cause the uk release is all over the place). I saw none of the funko at all, but to my surprise the first forbidden planet (where I was going to pick up a bag for mum) had most of the first wave! In fact the only one they didn’t have (oddly) was Mae. Of course I had to get my boy Yord (because I both love him and he’s out of stock for preorder everywhere). So I was really happy for that and it made the trip worthwhile. (Plus I also got my friend a thing too which turned out to be rare!)
After that I wandered round a bit, looking in tk at the Halloween stuff (which looked cool and there was a dapper fox art piece) and I got some rainbow stuff for Naryu from another place. Next stop was a Game outlet store and I got another Star Wars figure (Zero from The Mandalorian, for only£5), some Disney cards and two xbox games. Dolmen had been on my list for awhile and No Straight Roads sounded interesting, but my surprise was how much they were. £2. For both of them! (And Dolmen is a series x game too!) I wish I’d looked at the switch games more to see if there was a good one there, but overall I’m pleased with them. Dolmen might be added to my spooky season games next month.
After wandering some more I went to the other Forbidden Planet, where I got the Kelnacca comic, Star Wars magazine (there’s a Yord interview in the next one!) and some cheap funkos (Morgan from Ahsoka, Paz from The Mandalorian and Aipom). Then I hit up hmv and picked up a signed palaye album as a well as some fox stickers (they’re cute but I’m bad with stickers, I dunno where to stick them!).
Then I had some noms, went round the bullring quick (and saw the m and s Halloween stuff, I want the ghost train tin!) and got one of the new Lego dnd figures. (It’s an Aarakocra ranger with a cute pupper! I also got Szass Tam from one I ordered that was here when I got back.)
Then I went to see Alien Romulus. There was a load or trailers before it, some that I saw last week (Venom, Captain America) but there was also Speak No Evil (buff James Mcavoy looks… wrong), the Smile 2 teaser (which I really wanna see), a teaser for The Monkey (I think that’s what it was I’m curious) and Nosteratu (looks very atmospheric). I’m sure I’m missing one cause there was A Lot. (And there was an outlaws ad with a qr code for a ship colour!)
Anyway, thoughts ahoy! Under the cut.
Alien is a strange film series for me. It’s one I’ve seen all the films of but it’s not one I see all that regularly. Whenever I think of Alien I always think of how Ripley is the only sane woman (indeed I always think of the Sandy Claws quote from Nightmare Before Christmas (‘I'd listen to her! She's the only one who makes any sense around this insane asylum!’). But anyway.
The film really leans into the style of the first films. One of the opening scenes is on a ship and it’s all flashing buttons and old school style screens. I dunno why but there was something very pleasing about that. The film also feels very much like Alien, in that most of the characters have no idea what’s going on or what they’re up against.
The basic premise is there is a group of young people on a mining operation (that is really a horrific dystopia, but hey that’s Alien!) and they want to leave to an independent system. They have a ship, but what they need (cause the trip is long) is cryo pods. While doing a run in the ship one of them found an abandoned ‘ship’ that they think might have pods they can get, thus meaning they can leave.
Of course this being Alien the ship isn’t a ship, but a space station and it’s not just any space station, it’s a secret research station. Again this being alien you can probably figure out what that secret research involved. (Spoiler, that’s not actually a spoiler, it’s to do with Xenomorphs!)
Before I get into the spoiler thoughts I wanna say that overall I really liked it and thought it was a great film. Again, it felt very akin to the original Alien so if you liked that you’d probably like this.
Now spoiler thoughts.
One thing I really liked was how much of a threat the facehuggers actually were this time. While a lot of the time they’re just shown briefly this time they were a threat throughout the whole thing. I think that’s was definitely a good choice and the scenes with them really highlighted how much of a threat they could be.
Having Rook, the stations science officer, be a synth from the same line as Ash was a choice. I think it was a good one because it instantly made you suspicious of him (and a+ work on the voice actor) though I can see why people might think it was a bad idea. Also the groups synth changing from being sweet to cold due to an upgrade chip was really well done, a+ acting there.
The station had two halves, Remus and Romulus and I kinda wish that there’d been more to make each half distinct. (I loved the last shots of the station though). I also loved that the research done there wasn’t using the xenomorph for military use (like has been mentioned before) I think that was an interesting take (and I loved the Prometheus mention/link).
The last alien is really creepy, I dunno how to describe them without spoilers but they’re so unsettling. And, while it could easily be a standalone film there is a thread left open for a sequel. (I would be interested to see what actually went down on the station too.)
I’m sure I had more thoughts too but those are my main ones. (I’m sure I’m missing something though)
Last night up when I got back I was kinda tired and yet not at the same time? I watched The Swarm then went on Star Wars Outlaws some more. Damnn it’s so easy to get drawn in and lose yourself in it. But ahh I met Lady Qi’ra! I really need to watch Solo again. Also yay there was a gay couple in it too which was nice. And I got sidetracked and went to Akiva cause of them.
I was gonna watch the Quackity stream but cause it got delayed like three times I ended up drifting off which was a shame cause it seemed fun.
Today the tiredness really hit me, my eyes have been achy as has my head a but which is annoying (plus I zoned out and had a nap). Before that though I did work on the Deku tree some more. I have almost finished it now, I think there’s only one more bag of the BOTW one left. It looks very pretty, though I had to dismantle a bit when I realised the mouth was wrong which was a pain. But it looks pretty with all the blossom and I love the lil korok friends who are adorable.
The last BOTW bag is for a few more trees. But there’s also a few other bags which must be for OOT things. So I’m gonna go through them so I can make the stuff from there. There’s gonna be at least the Deku tree sprout, deku babas, skulltula, fairy bow/slingshot and gossip stone.
Also mum’s not been feeling too great. I think she’s hid exactly how bad she’s been feeling cause she had a test at the doctor’s yesterday and they gave her meds instantly. Then today she’s been even worse and I dunno if it’s cause of the infection or the meds. Either way we can’t really do anything cause of the weekend, I just hope she doesn’t make herself worse.
I think that’s all I wanna ramble about, though, as always, I suspect I’m missing something.
