shadowhive: (Techno Minecraft pig)

So yesterday I watched the rest of the switch 2 treehouse coverage and it was mostly nothing too special. I am sold on the Kirby game that’s getting an upgrade, it looks so pretty! And I’m a bit more interested in the Donkey Kong game now too. I missed the main part of the bravely default section (due to helping mum with spelling) but I it looked pretty good.

Last night I unfortunately ended up crashing a bit which was annoying. I hate my energy has been so trash lately.

Today mum’s friend came and that meant I had to go to town. My decisions were to use her ticket and either just pay money in, or get a few bits or I could get my own bus ticket to see a Minecraft movie since it was a decent time.

To be honest I was a bit indecisive about seeing it. The first trailer did look very… wtf and reviews seem to be mixed. But I was gonna be going to town anyway and, after how bad the recent weeks have been I decided to see it.

So what did I think? Thoughts under the cut (since it’s opening week).

Before heading to the cinema I did go and try the Minecraft meal in McDonald’s and it was pretty good. The collectible I got was the fry helmet and it seems to be truly random as the boxes don’t seem labelled.

When I got to the cinema I was surprised cause there was a long queue, longer than any I’d seen there before. And yeah it was packed. Maybe cause it’s weekend opening showing but yeah, it was almost full.

There were a few trailers beforehand, though I’m fairly sure Thunderbolts* and Jurassic Park shouldn’t have trailers attached to a PG film. But anyway.

I went in with pretty low expectations, but honestly? I did end up enjoying it. The start is a tad cringey I’ll admit but once it gets going it was a good time.

The film has gone for a plot of ‘people get sucked into a game style world’ type thing. Most of the cast end up there together(Steve was there already) and so we experience the world through their eyes. And, honestly the world is pretty, you can’t fault the graphics for the environments (though it does make you wish wonder why it wasn’t completely animated). Some of the visuals sif the animals/enemies is a bit uncanny but it’s not quite as cursed as the early trailers made us think they would be.

The plot is kinda standard for this stuff, they're stuck in this strange new world and need to get something to get home wiphich also being chased by a villain who wants it too. Like that’s a plot that’s been done plenty of times before and overall it’s done here well enough. Like there’s some really good sequences, the attack on the village, the elytra flight, the woodland mansion (I wish there’d been a bit more time there).

And yes there is a subplot where Jennifer Coolidge’s character hits a villager with her car and goes on a date with him. That’s a real thing that happens. (The subplot is pretty short though and spaced out which it’s up to you if that’s good or bad.)

The characters have pretty good chemistry but DAMN I did not expect Steve and Garrett (Jason Mamoa’s character) to have a definite thing. Like I saw people say things last night but I wasn’t sure how serious they were. But fuck. Steve calls him ‘Gar Gar’. And rides him. You might think I’m joking about that but I’m not. There’s yaoi in a Minecraft movie.

(Which I guess makes sense they totally know that people watch minecraft for creativity and yaoi.)

Also there was a lil tribute to Technoblade in there. It was a small thing and if you had no idea who he was you’d not pick up on it but damn it was sweet.

So yeah it was a good time (despite Jack Black being a little much as Steve at times).

I could probably say more but it’d get into spoiler territory a bit much so I’ll end it there. But there does seem to be an opening for a sequel. And honestly, I wouldn’t mind it if they did as long as they bought everyone back.

After that I picked some stuff up from Morrisons then came home.

Now I’m gonna flop a bit, I might watch Inferno to finish Doctor Who season 7 off before the new series starts (next week!) and I’m hoping creative vibes might come back later too.
