This was gonna be part of the first snowflake challenge post but I figured it should be it’s own thing instead (if only to make it easier to sticky) so snowflake will be later.
Happy new year, I hope this year is better than the last.
As someone said a few days ago (it was on stream but I can’t remember who) last year felt more like three. The last fourth (maybe even third) was really hard and just.. bleh.
But anyway.
Yesterday I spent it, after the last post, I watched a few things. I’m putting thoughts on them under the cut so people that haven’t seen them can avoid spoilers (Strange World, Frozen 2, Yesterday). Before that I also had a delivery of the replacement earth orbit thing which impressed me cause I didn’t expect that. I’ve not checked it yet to start it but might tomorrow)
First off is Strange World, I was looking forward to it because the trailers looked cool but the timing for it being on the cinema was so bad (everything went wrong, including mums fall and everything) so I was glad I heard it’d be on Disney+. In short, I really enjoyed it, even if it was slightly different than I expected it to be. (I expected it to be a group exploring an alien planet which it kinda is but kinda isn’t)
The film has two main highlights for me. First the world design. The plants and creatures all look so amazing and it all looks so beautiful. That was one of the big draws for me when I saw the trailers and it really delivered on that. Also Splat is so cute.
The second is one of the protagonists, the son of the family Ethan, is gay! And yeah Disney have been so bad when it comes to gay characters but this isn’t blink and you’ll miss it stuff or things mentioned in a line that can be deleted easily. It’s a key part of him and how he’s crushing on this cute boy is bought up about, 4 times? And there’s no judgement for it, even from his grandfather when they find him. It was just so nice to see that. Here’s hoping for more to come.
It’s definitely something I’ll watch again sometime this year and I think there’s enough to explore in a sequel (though it works well enough without one, I’m just curious about the reveal and what it means)
Then I watched Frozen 2 which was unintentionally but I figured why not. I definitely like the first one more, but it’s still enjoyable. The little fire spirit lizard is so cute and into the unknown is stuck in my head. (It’s one of the few songs that’s stuck and I think that’s one of the issues.) It also brings a few things into question like the princesses mum was from a tribe that knew about magic so why was she ok with Elsa just… suppressing it instead of learning to control it? And why wasn’t Elsa at Anna’s coronation at the end?and I’m sure there’s more thoughts too but it’s gone
We also watched Yesterday cause it was on tv (after doing more Sonic Frontiers) it was actually better than I was expecting it to be, though they should’ve explored the concept more. Like what else was different in the alternative universe (there was at least no Beatles, Oasis, cigarettes, Coca Cola and Harry Potter, the last one amuses me) or what caused it. And why could those people remember too? But as it was it was pretty good
We spent new years night watching bbc 1, including Sam Ryder’s new year thing which was ok. I dunno it just wasn’t one of the best and I can’t place why. Though kudos to him for really trying.
Following it was the big Eurovision party which was definitely better. There was so many great Eurovision songs on it, I think my far was Subwoolfer’s one and the Ukrainian section towards the end. You also have to give Lordi credit too, they always come on these things and put on a good show despite being the obvious odd one out. I might watch it again some point.
Today I was gonna try and watch the new years concert but it was on too early and cause it’s a life thing it took awhile to appear on iplayer (it’s up there now though so I might watch tomorrow). Instead of watching that I did some a Pokémon Violet, not much but enough to do a gym, yay!
Tonight I’m gonna watch a bunch of things (I might do the snowflake thing during call the midwife) and I might game some after this post,
Do I have New Year’s resolutions? I didn’t really have anything specific in mind but I’m gonna post some thoughts now.
*Each month I wanna watch at least one thing on each of the following: Amazon prime, Disney+, Netflix, shudder (cause I’ve been faily at that)
*I want to finish at least one book a month (or maybe every two)
*I want to finish one game a month (again, maybe every two)
*I want to post one fic a month (at least)

Date: 2023-01-02 07:52 am (UTC)I enjoyed Sam Ryder. You're right, it wasn't a classic but he seems like such a lovely man.
