So first catching up on the last two June somethings

Day 13: Squicks - What are some things that squick you in fandom - not necessarily "icky", though it can be. From anything involving blood, to bad grammar.

So when I saw this I was a bit like ‘hmm I’m not sure’ which was one of the reasons I didn’t answer it, but thinking of it I’ve come up with a few things.

Underage: I’m not a fan of it really, I mean if it’s between teenagers it’s ok but younger is a bit… Nah.

Memory loss: this is a pretty big one for me and it’s for a definite personal reason. My nan has Alzheimer’s and seeing her go through that, seeing her mind fade until she looked blankly at us… I just, no. It’s a big nope from me.

…damn I know something else came into my mind but now that I’m sitting here typing this… they’ve gone out of my head, which is annoying.

Oh there’s one thing which, I dunno if it counts as a squick, it’s probably more of an annoyance. So ao3 is great because it has a tagging system, but what’s not great is when people do these posts and every chapter is a different fic…. In a different fandom. So the tag list becomes a mass of fandoms and pairings and it just becomes this huge block of text (even worse if they don’t have the pairings listed in chapters or a contents page).

Day 14: What fandom broke your heart?

I’m not a big crier. It takes a lot to make me cry, but I’ll tell you what has made me cry and that’s Star Wars. First off Revenge Of The Sith made me teary when I watched it, especially during order 66 and everything on Mustafar (it still has the power to do that, especially after the clone wars).

Th second point is much later, in 2016. It was around christmas and news broke that something had happened to Carrie Fisher. I’d hoped that she would pull through, that she was a fighter and she’d be ok… but she didn’t. And I just, I was a mess. And I dunno why, but it just upset me so much.

Needless to say when I saw The Last Jedi, and there were scenes with Princess Leia both almost dying and having a last conversation with Luke (and then it being dedicated to her) it made me cry.

So yeah.

I’m gonna try and catch up on reading other people’s June something posts at some point, maybe later.

***

Ok away from emotional stuff.

Yesterday I watched Miss Congeniality 2 because it was on tv, which I hoped it would be, and it was fun. Not as good as the first one, but it was still funny.

Yesterday was the Xbox e3 presentation and it was pretty good. Most everything is going to be on game pass, and there was a lot of trailers for stuff though my mind is pretty bad at remembering them. I’m excited for Starfield, which is coming out next year cause it’s spacey, and Hades is coming to Xbox in a few months which is awesome!

However the best game of yesterday wasn’t during that, but during the Square Enix stream after it. I wasn’t going to watch it and only caught the start because I was watching something else but I’m glad I did. Because the first game (which took up about 15 minutes of the stream which felt a tad long) was a Guardians Of The Galaxy game! It looks awesome and so fun and it’s just we! It’s coming out the week after my birthday and mums agreed to put at least some towards it so woo!

Although you know what was annoying? They replaced some of the music for the stream due to issues and just… DMCA is so fucking awful like that, that an official developer stream of a game that will obviously have a music focus had to stream it out… what a stupid fucking thing. Ugh.

(I did win a code for something called Griftlands from an Xbox co stream thing so I’ll go on that tonight I think.)

Last night I watched Jeepers Creepers, cause someone mentioned it on Twitter the other day and I’d not seen it in years. It was pretty good, though I had to wonder exactly what the deal is with the creeper being tied to the song. It seemed to be just used because of the last scene.

Before it I did watch the Waterparks stream again, because it was the last night to watch it and I’d not realised it. It was a pretty good show and I’m glad I got to watch again.

I did end up getting a spark of creativity last night, so I ended up finishing the first season of kink fic, woo! I might work on finishing the angsty fic next, before deciding what the next one is.

Today there’s no E3 stuff which seems pretty strange. I’m gonna try and finish Thirteen Storeys though and then… I dunno what book will be next. Maybe Into The Darkness, or the graphic novels I have. We’ll see.

Bwahahaha, I've done that. Although I think only for my ten song memes, and for the one sentence fic things, so they are at least limited by that. I'm less enamoured when it's 67 chapters of completely unconnected tumblr fics. The thing that truly bugs me about those though is when the authors don't title the chapters. Please, please give me a way to navigate through your mass of fandom ficlets to find the ones I'm genuinely interested in reading.

The one that bugs me about AO3 tags though is when people use them like tumblr tags. Argh. Random sentences in the middle of your tags fry my brain!

Question on squicks though: Do you find there are some things you just won't touch at all, while others you'll write for but not read? Curious, because I do - some (mpreg as an example) I can neither read nor write, but others (like mental illness) I'm happy to write, but exceedingly wary about reading, unless maybe if it's from a very trusted author.

Must be a hell of a thing for people with triggers (as opposed to squicks) because I can imagine it ends up as a bit of a minefield.

Honestly, it has to be a hell of a summary to draw me in if the fic is covered in tumblr tags. They make me twitch, and not in a good way :(

Oh, what is it called? A NOTP (as opposed to an OTP), I believe. I have... none of those, I don't think. There are pairings that interest me more or less than others, but I don't think there's any I hard no on reading in any fandom I'm in.

Ugh, I hate this too! Every time I see this happen, I just wonder why they're not separate fics, listed under the same "series" maybe, but separate fics. Why do people do this?

Definitely had the same reaction for Carrie Fisher. Although for me it was with Rogue One. I watched it twice in theaters, and the first time she was still alive, and the second time . . . she wasn't. I was not prepared for that final scene at all.

I'm still not over Carrie Fisher. I miss her so much and I wish we got to see what Star Wars continued to be with her.

The DMCA at E3 stuff is so hilariously stupid. What a nightmare.

The unconnected fics all mashed into one work thing drives me bonkers, too, idk where it started, but I've been seeing it more in bandoms lately and often from authors talking about Wattpad ... which might have something to do with it? IDK. Wattpad definitely pushes the idea that it's "meant" for serialized fiction, not one-shots, but the idea of putting twenty unrelated fandoms together just ... it turns me off so much, I don't think it's doing what these authors think it's going to do for them. And also there's no ... point to it? Like with Wattpad, if you ever want to join their monetizing program, you have to be doing certain numbers, so "serializing" your short fics into a single "book" would be a way of helping you to do that. But since AO3 doesn't run that way it just ... makes no sense? I dunno, I pretty much never click on those anyway. :p
