So, that was the finale and, as such, it was both longer than a normal ep and had more to it as a result. It had things to tie up from the series as a whole as well as the last part so how did it do.
Having the master come back did mean that the lone cyberman did end up a lesser role, which is kinda a shame cause there was still a lot of mystery there. I wasn’t surprised when the master shrank him down. I was surprised he had a ‘death particle’ inside him. Like why did he have that? What made him so important? I guess we’ll never know now.
I really love this master and I hope we haven’t seen the last of him, two stories really isn’t enough of him. I loved that he mocked the lone cyberman’s idea to turn them into robots. And the new cybermen he made looked so pretty, though I don’t expect we’ll see them again which is a shame. The idea of them is horrific though.
Of course the main part of the master is finding out what made him decide to destroy Gallifrey. I’ll be honest, I expected it to be something... I dunno. It didn’t feel like enough of a reason to destroy the whole society. Though his telling of time lord history was... interesting. It still leaves a lot of question marks of course. What was redacted from the matrix? Was the doctor one of those two people in front of the division? Why was the doctor put through that weird Ireland simulation?
For a moment I thought the timeless child reveal would be the master (I think that’d have justified his anger more) but instead it was the Doctor. So now we have more mysteries. Where did the doctor actually come from? What are they? And how does Ruth Doctor fit into things? (It was a nice touch seeing her in it, even in the matrix, I’d love to see more of her).
Alas there was no Jack and only a passing mention of the resistance he was part of, but I’m not surprised by that. Nor am I not surprised that the doctor couldn’t detonate the particle at the end. I was surprised by the Judoon appearing and taking her to a prison (reminiscent of the old new series finales were there’d be a ‘what?k moment for the special). The prison made me think of the one from Shada (and the interior gave me stormcage vibes before it was revealed to be a station). And the title reveals the daleks are back.
As for the companions, I’m so glad no one died! There were nice moments between them. Graham and Ya’s talk, Ryan blowing up Cybermen, Yaz being the first to go after the doctor. And the scene with them dressed as cybermen must’ve been terrifying.

Date: 2020-03-01 09:57 pm (UTC)And I, too, felt that the reveal wasn't enough to explain why the Master would destroy the whole society, or think the Doctor would understand why he thought that was a good idea. I also kept wondering why she believed him - he's had a lot of opportunity to insert illusions or something into the Matrix. If he could hack it he could probably also do things like that. And in any case the commentary was done by him, and he probably had a hand in selecting what she saw.
I'm guessing Ruth Doctor is one of those lives the Doctor forgot. Someone before Hartnell's Doctor. It could make sense she was a part of the Doctor's story that worked for the Division, because she seemed to be working for someone. Or she could be a future version, though I don't know who's left there anymore to make her forget past lives.
And yeah, I knew the Doctor wasn't going to be able to detonate the particle. Though at the same time, is it so much better to just let someone else do it? But I'm glad none of the companions died. I was particularly worried about Yaz, because she was centred a lot in this story and I felt like it could be a prelude to her dying heroically. I'm really glad that didn't happen.

And the doctor knows that the matrix can be tampered with in such a manner (trial of a time lord showed that). The trouble is, of course, with no one else around he can say anything and no one can contradict him. (That said I don’t think they’d make a reveal this big turn out to be a lie, even though the redacted parts could easily make it so)
Yeah I suspect she’s a past one. I’d love to see more of her and what the division actually did.
That’s true, I don’t think she could because, well it’s her home even after everything. Yeah I’m glad she didn’t, I worried she would.
