Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So when I first saw this I was a bit unsure of what to put, but thankfully, I ended up walking the pup and of course, ideas came so...

The Umbrella Academy tv show came it in 2019, which is crazy (but also times were a bit saner then and I miss them). The bit of canon about it that I’m gonna talk about is the very first episode. First off the intro to it is perfect, starting with the random births and then moving on to where all the Academy members are now, complete with names and numbers shown on screen. The montage is perfect, giving hints about them and establishing them all. Of course two of the seven numbers are absent during this. five, who shows up later, and Ben.

Now in the comics Ben is fairly minor, only showing up in flashbacks and that seemed to be the case for the show as well. Until the very last scene, where he is shown in the back of Diego’s car with Klaus as a mysterious figure (and then his name and number shows up confirming who he is). And I just loved all of that! The reveal and then him showing up in every episode after that, it was so great. And the fact that hid it all so well.

The Mandalorian did a similar thing, because at the end of episode one there was the child who, like Ben, went on to have a major role in the show. Before the show started there wasn’t much in the way of info about it. The Mandalorian was a bounty hunter and, as such, I figured that’s what the show would be with him hunting down bounties. Indeed, the first episode seemed to be going in that direction right up until the last scene and he found out his current bounty was a child.

The child changed the show completely, it changed the Mandalorian as a character completely and it meant that the show was going in a completely different and unexpected direction. (And yeah the child is adorable and funny and every so cute.)

The show has shown that a live action Star Wars show is not just possible but that it works. Season 2 shown that you can also bring back characters from the animated shows (and books) and bring them into live action and make it virtually seamless. I’m so excited for wherever this show goes next, as well as the others that are coming too. (I do hope the child comes back and we get Sinjir from the Aftermath novels too)

I’ve recently been watching Deep Space Nine again, because it’s being shown on one of the channels here and it just has reminded me how much I love it and why it’s my favourite of the Trek shows. I really hope someone from it makes an appearance in Picard season 2.

Book time now.

I’m pretty sure I’ve already waxed lyrical about how Bloodline is my favourite new canon Star Wars book that I’ve read (cause it’s so Leia centric) and a few posts back I mentioned my favourite short story so far from A Certain point Of View Empire Strikes Back (A Good Kiss which features a tauntaun called Sunshine and a same sex kiss). So that’s my Star Wars book rambling for now.

Last year I read the new Night Vale book, The Faceless Old Woman That Secretly Lives In Your Home and it’s just an amazing book. To say I couldn’t put it down is accurate, I was reading it so much because it’s just.... I don’t want to inadvertently spoil it but if you like Night Vale read it, and if you’ve never heard the show... you can still enjoy it because it’s not set in the town until the end. At its heart it’s an adventure, a tale of revenge and what it does to you.

Also last year I read another book that had a similar effect, Lesser known Monsters. It’s a horror story but it’s also a queer horror story about, well, monsters. Again I don’t want to inadvertently spoil it, but I love it and it’s the start of a series so I’m looking forward to where it goes.

Lastly there is a game that came out, also last year, called Spiritfarer. It’s an indie game and currently on Xbox game past and it’s just... it’s beautiful, fun, funny and, most importantly, it gave me so many feels. It was something I played constantly when I started playing it and I can’t recommend it enough.

Thursday was a pretty quiet day. I read some more of the Who magazine and watched Death In Paradiseand the Big fat quiz (and both were great and the latter was so funny!).

Yesterday was a mail day. I got the. New Klaus comic so I ended up reading that in the afternoon and the new Mandalorian lego set came. It’s a nice little set and I love the child and new Mandalorian figures. Mum absolutely loves the little speeder and the carrier for the child at the back.

It seems that republicans are starting to abandon trump, like rats leaving a sinking trip (apologises to rats for the comparison). To me it feels too little too late. Same with twitter finally suspending his account. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad they’ve done something but it’s like that spongebob gif of ‘we saved the city!’ With said city burning in the background.

It seems there’s been fresh MCR twitter nonsense but as I’m blocked by most involved I had no idea till last night. Seems someone posted nsfw art on their twitter and people were complaining because ‘minors followed them’. (I’ve not seen the art so can’t comment on if it actually was nsfw or not.) to me it just goes to show that minors should not be in fandom following adults and then harassing them. I still do not understand how mcr has so many minor fans and how they think acting in such a manner is appropriate. It just puts me off the band and the fandom altogether.

Ugh.

I went on Valhalla a bit more last night and I’m still disappointed that they never sorted the Yule stuff. I was amused that one quest had someone pull a Padme and use a decoy and I still, unreasonably, love Ivarr. I think I picked out on something the other night about what feels off about it compared to recent games. In Odyssey and Origins you were fighting to save your homeland from the order of the ancients influence but with Valhalla you’re a stranger in a strange land.

Today I’m gonna catch up on some stuff on players, plus there’s new masked singer and maybe Men In Black International.

In your own space, create some goals. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Ironically, yesterday I did a post that was about Resolutions so I’ve actually kinda done this.

However I’ll add two more specifically for this.

*Write. I have about half a dozen WIPs that I really need to work on and finish. I hope I can one of them soon. Almost all are The Umbrella Academy and Klaus ships.

*Go through and comment more on other snowflake posts. I’ve mostly just commented on stuff on my friends list so I’m gonna try and look through some others at some point.

Yesterday I did do some reading, reading the next From A Certain Point Of View Story which is my favourite so far. It’s about the guy that, famously, comes between Han and Leia as they argue on Echo base. Turns out he’s a sweet guy, if a little clumsy, with a crush on a tauntaun handler (and there’s a tauntaun called Sunshine) and the end is just amazing. I know we’ll likely never see him again but I’d love a follow up.

I took in my prescription and popped in the co-op quick and they have Easter eggs already! I’d say boo, but they had the Mini galaxy ones which are just the best.

Last night I went on Valhalla some more and I’m still annoyed by the festival being screwy, but I started the next alliance quest line. There’s a guy called Ivarr and he’s kinda hot (his hair reminds me of Skrillex, half shaved half long) and he’s a total sadist. I’m gonna look through ao3 once I’ve done it to see if there’s some fic of him with Eivor (or his brother).

Then I did a few random games but I just ended up feeling drained probably because of *gestures at the obvious*

This morning the next Who magazine came, yay! So I’m gonna read that soon. I wanna get the yearbook, but the shipping is about £3 and sainsburys didn’t have it before Christmas so... ugh.

The first High Republic book is gonna arrive today so that’ll go on my soon to read pile (which isn’t a thing but should be).

Resolutions

shadowhive: (BB-8 Thumbs up)
Well since it’s snowflake I usually end up posting a lot so... here’s another one, even though it’s not snowflake related.

I usually don’t do resolutions, or forget them. My mind is usually a mess at the best of times. However this time I have three.

Read more I have a load of books I’ve got to read. I have virtually all the new canon Star Wars books (bar the battlefront ones which I still need to find) and there’s many I’ve not read. (the Poe one, all of the Thrawn ones, the Alphabet Squadron ones among others) so I want to actually get through them. I’m currently reading From A Certain Point Of View Empire Strikes Back and I want to be reading one of the short stories each week day,

Non Star Wars books I have to read is Thirteen Stories, by Jonathan Sims of The Magnus Archives and the I Am The Master short story collection (I need to get the Time Lord Victorious books too).

So yeah, I’m hoping to book read more. (And yeah, fic read too, but this is mostly book reading,

Watch more stuff I have to watch lists on Netflix, Shudder and Amazon, plus I have piles of blu rays and DVDs that I need to get through. I want to watch at least one thing a week, hopefully more. (Priority things are Discovery and Julie And The Phantoms)

I also wanna continue my Clone Wars rewatch that I started last year but failed.

(In a similar vein I wanna get through some of my games on Xbox and Switch, which I’ve failed at).

Not dwell on things This is a bit more serious, and it’s mostly because of how my depression works. More people abandoned me last year and I want to try and not think too much on them. They left me and they’re not coming back (as much as I may like some too). That means I’ve gotta resist urges to think on them or look at their stuff.

So yeah. I did think about including top five lists of things from last year in this post too, but honestly? My mind gets blank on some things.

***

After the post yesterday I watched The High Republic stream from Monday and it definitely all sounds interesting. There’s definitely a lot of collaboration gone into it and I do want to read all the things that are part of it. (Even though the IDW comics are, for some reason, hard to find here as is Insider.) I’m still a little unclear on what the great disaster is, other than it involving Hyperspace, but I guess we’ll see.

I’m most looking forward to Into The Dark, since it sounds the most interesting and it’s also by Claudia Gray who did my favourite of the new canon books that I’ve read. If there’s one criticism from the things announced so far it’s that everything is Jedi focussed. While these new jedi do sound cool, it’s called the high republic era and it’s be nice to see Republic people (instead of just being relegated to the stories being put out in insider).

I reinstalled Valhalla, but it didn’t solve the Yule festival issue which is... so annoying. I’m hoping that they figure out what’s happened and not just patch it but give an extra week for the people that have had issues (and it seems that there’s been a lot of people that have had them). I just did a few random things last night, unlocking high points (though one was... annoying, thanks saur for helping). But good things! You can pet dogs! and get a cat as part of your crew!

I might do the next alliance quest, but with gamerscore rewards thing going on I might go through some quick games instead.

So last night I ended up watching The Grudge, which is the new version that came out last year. Before I start, though, here is a bit of the description of it from tv tropes:

Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) is contacted by Peter Spencer (John Cho) about an encounter while visiting a house for sale.

This is, quite frankly, wrong. Not only do these two characters never meet (or interact in any way), Peter doesn’t even interact with any of the other detectives in the film. So yeah, that’s a little odd that that’s in their description.

Like most Grudge films it’s set over different time periods (although for this one it makes it clear that’s the case) which are woven together over the course of the film. The focus, however, is on the detective (which surprised me as I thought the focus was on John’s character) who gets drawn into the mysterious happenings that occur.

Now, it’s been awhile since I’ve seen the other Grudge films, but they were mostly related to one location in Japan. This one moves things to America (bar the opening at the original house) so it’s mostly all new things. Admittedly it did make me jump a few times and there are a few good characters and ideas. But there’s a few things from the deleted scenes that should’ve been in there (an extended version of a scene towards The end would have been better than what we got). So yeah it was good, but I dunno if I’ll watch it again any time soon.

The tree has been taking down and put up which has made me achy, and it’s kinda sad seeing the empty space. I’m gonna bring down the box thing over the next few days, so that Naryu can get back on it and look out the window.

Other than that I’m gonna hope to read soon and then drop off my prescription up the road.

Challenge #3

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is an interesting challenge and it’s got me thinking. I think I’m gonna do a few fandoms instead of just one.

Animal Crossing - Flick and Lucky. Flick, because he has such an awesome look and I wanna ask where he got his net and outfit plus I wanna see how he makes his models and see what bug knowledge he has. Lucky because he’s just so cute and I wanna give him all the hugs.

Bands - Jay James, Maxx Danziger, Ray Toro. Jay cause he’s sweet and hot and Welsh, and to find out what’s happened to him after the band (that wiki mentions he’s a driver now but that’s the first I’ve heard of it so...). Maxx is so cute and I got into Set It Off last year. He does streams and he’s so funny, so gaming with him would be fun. Ray is so pretty and I bet he gives good hugs, plus I want to hear him play.

Doctor Who - Captain Jack Harkness cause I bet he’d have a lot of interesting stories, plus he’d be fun.

Elder Scrolls Online - Rigurt and Naryu. Rigurt is a character that often shows up in Elder Scrolls Online, mostly around the Ebonheart pact and he always makes me smile. He is a ‘diplomat’ but he’s not too great at it (it’s implied he’s only sent out because he causes trouble). He’s sweet and funny, though I wouldn’t want him to cook for me! Naryu is similar in that I look forward to her quests and I bet she has interesting stories (indeed one of the physical items made is her journal and she has a funko!) Also I’d wonder what she’d think of my pup being named after her. And he’ll, I’d like Fennorian too, also because he’d have interesting stories... and yeah, cause he’s a hot vampire.

The Legend Of Zelda - Prince Sidon mostly because of his positivity, although if he visited he would be banging his head everywhere cause he’s a tol boi.

MCU - Thor, again because of stories and because he’d be fun to have around. Also he’s strong so if we need jars opening... and Ned too, because he’s adorable and geeky, plus he likes Lego!

Star Wars - Princess Leia because I mean come on, it’s Princess Leia! Who wouldn’t want her around to tell stories. Grogu (aka the child, aka baby Yoda) is so adorable and sweet... although I think he’s try and eat things he shouldn’t.

I could probably think of more if I put my mind to it but I’ll leave it there.

***

As expected we’ve entered a full lockdown. What that means I don’t know, but I hope people get the support that they desperately need. (There’s also annoyance with A-levels being cancelled for people but other exams are still going ahead which seems....) Bah.

I finished off the alliance quest line with Soma last night which was good, yay! And got Birna to join my crew, who I like though it’s sad Soma didn’t return her love. Annoyingly though it seems I’ve had a bug. I got the intro thing to the Yule festival but... nothing else. There’s no decorations, no related quests. I restarted the game and nothing, so I’m reinstalling it cause there’s apparently a bug. Which sucks.

I’m also annoyed at amazon. I’d won a £20 gift card and had the balance on my account, but it turns out it went and used some of it for the wool mum wanted last month despite me telling it not to. It sucks, cause I was saving it to go towards a nendoroid of Link from Majorca’s mask but... bleh.

Today I’m gonna watch the high republic stream since I didn’t last night and, hopefully, go on the Yule Festival. And maybe watch The Grudge since I popped the disc in.

Challenge #2

In your own space (or their own space) interact with someone new. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. No need to leave a link for this one, but if you’d like to invite others to join the conversation, please do leave one.

I’m going through the first challenge post and have so far replied to... one new person. Hopefully I’ll do a few more soon.

But if you feel like saying hi here to fulfil the challenge feel welcome to! 🖤

I’ve gotten to England on Valhalla and a I’ve been working my way through the Alliance with Soma questline, which I hope to finish tonight so I can do the Yule festival.

This morning was back to doing uni reading which was stuff from the week before Christmas. The OU messed with their passwords so I and many others had no access to the accounts so I’m having to do that today and tomorrow.

I’m gonna try and do reading in the weekday afternoons. I meant to continue the new From A Certain Point Of View, but instead read some from the last Who magazine. The new one is out this week and it’s focused on The Master with info on the new boxset.

I missed the High Republic livestream so I’m gonna watch it tonight. It’s looking good so far though who knows when I’ll read the stuff cause I’m so far behind on my books.

I got a delivery today which was a late card and The Grudge and Men In Black International from zoom.ill watch the former one of the nights and the latter this weekend I think.

It’s looking like we’ll be going into another lockdown soon. We’ll see how that goes and if it comes with needed policies to help. Ha.

I’m annoyed that argos are having offers on Star Wars Lego but none of them are in stock here, not even for delivery. Damnit, this always happens.
shadowhive: (Ray Snowflake grin)
Christmas ended up being mostly pretty quiet. After unwrapping presents (which on my part was a bit strange because I already knew what most things were, mum wasn’t able to get nay surprises causa everything) we took the pup her usual walk.

It was a nice day, if a little cold, though since it had been wet recently there was a man in a wheelchair that had gotten stuck. I tried my best to help but had no strength enough to move him. Thankfully mum saw a guy and went to get him and he moved it in like 10 seconds, making it look easy.

When I got back I basically snuggled and watched the Kylie gig while making Lego. First was a little BB-8 brick sketch which we got from the Lego site. It’s quite cute and looks nice. The Kylie gig was nice too, ami. Of Christmas songs and her own which is always good.

Food, for me, was a nut roast. I had a tear and share garland thing to have with it, but I didn’t even touch it since it was so filling. It’s still in the fridge so might have it tomorrow.

After noms I watched Early Man on BBC1 and built one of the other Lego sets, one of a Hedwig. It was quite tricky and intricate, mostly because it’s got a mechanism in it so her wings flap. It’s a nice display piece and she’s currently by the nightmare before Christmas tree.

With that finished I put on one of the films I got mum. I got her the Miss Marple boxset with Margaret Rutherford, which used to be on when we first got film 4. I’d been looking for them for awhile and decided to get them now. So we watched the first then and the second on boxing day. They are quite fun and entertaining and I bet we’ll watch the others this week too.

I dozed during the strictly countdown thing, but watched call the midwife which I usually don’t. It wasn’t as grim as the Christmas ones seem to be which was good. We watched a few other things which were fun, including the Miranda game thing which was funny.

I got pretty tired though, so went to bed a little after mum.

I did manage to nab some codes from twitter the past few days, Green Hell for the switch, Zodiac and Towaga on Xbox. I don’t know much about any of them really but shall look soon.

Boxing Day was pretty uneventful too, mostly spent watching stuff and building the other Lego setI got, which was the hogwarts clock tower, my first of the proper sets based on it. The stuff from the advent calendar goes with it which is nice but it’s a little odd in some ways. The main tower has three rooms, each of which are lacking in their own ways. The ground floor has an entranceway... but no door which feels odd. The next floor is Moody’s classroom, but there’s no Moody included (nor is he in any sets so far) and the top floor is meant to be the infirmary but there’s no nurse with it either. I guess it’s understandable since the focus is on the ball and all the figures are related to that, but those things still feel a little like glaring omissions.

Anyways.i finally started Valhalla last night, after Quiz of the year (and it seems the mystery of the monoliths is revealed, if that new Lexusad is anything to go by). I’ve completed the i first area, and got on the longboat into the sea (and gone to a nearby town. I will have to remember not to go into the water, since the cold is damaging (which will take some getting used to since Origins and Odyssey you could freely swim in it).

Today has been a pretty lazy day too. I meant to listen to the last bonus Magnus archives thing this morning but didn’t. Maybe tomorrow. I was gonna sort the gas card but the store was closed, even though the site said it was open. Ugh. I dunno why credit needs to be put on to make the rest show up but ah well.

We watched The Masked Singer today despite itv hub going odd and damn! I got the revealed person right! A first!

It’s almost the end of 2020 (thank fuck) and I’m gonna try and finish Julie and the phantoms, watch Soul, do Sims 4 and Valhalla and... I dunno.

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas.
