So when I first saw this I was a bit unsure of what to put, but thankfully, I ended up walking the pup and of course, ideas came so...
The Umbrella Academy tv show came it in 2019, which is crazy (but also times were a bit saner then and I miss them). The bit of canon about it that I’m gonna talk about is the very first episode. First off the intro to it is perfect, starting with the random births and then moving on to where all the Academy members are now, complete with names and numbers shown on screen. The montage is perfect, giving hints about them and establishing them all. Of course two of the seven numbers are absent during this. five, who shows up later, and Ben.
Now in the comics Ben is fairly minor, only showing up in flashbacks and that seemed to be the case for the show as well. Until the very last scene, where he is shown in the back of Diego’s car with Klaus as a mysterious figure (and then his name and number shows up confirming who he is). And I just loved all of that! The reveal and then him showing up in every episode after that, it was so great. And the fact that hid it all so well.
The Mandalorian did a similar thing, because at the end of episode one there was the child who, like Ben, went on to have a major role in the show. Before the show started there wasn’t much in the way of info about it. The Mandalorian was a bounty hunter and, as such, I figured that’s what the show would be with him hunting down bounties. Indeed, the first episode seemed to be going in that direction right up until the last scene and he found out his current bounty was a child.
The child changed the show completely, it changed the Mandalorian as a character completely and it meant that the show was going in a completely different and unexpected direction. (And yeah the child is adorable and funny and every so cute.)
The show has shown that a live action Star Wars show is not just possible but that it works. Season 2 shown that you can also bring back characters from the animated shows (and books) and bring them into live action and make it virtually seamless. I’m so excited for wherever this show goes next, as well as the others that are coming too. (I do hope the child comes back and we get Sinjir from the Aftermath novels too)
I’ve recently been watching Deep Space Nine again, because it’s being shown on one of the channels here and it just has reminded me how much I love it and why it’s my favourite of the Trek shows. I really hope someone from it makes an appearance in Picard season 2.
Book time now.
I’m pretty sure I’ve already waxed lyrical about how Bloodline is my favourite new canon Star Wars book that I’ve read (cause it’s so Leia centric) and a few posts back I mentioned my favourite short story so far from A Certain point Of View Empire Strikes Back (A Good Kiss which features a tauntaun called Sunshine and a same sex kiss). So that’s my Star Wars book rambling for now.
Last year I read the new Night Vale book, The Faceless Old Woman That Secretly Lives In Your Home and it’s just an amazing book. To say I couldn’t put it down is accurate, I was reading it so much because it’s just.... I don’t want to inadvertently spoil it but if you like Night Vale read it, and if you’ve never heard the show... you can still enjoy it because it’s not set in the town until the end. At its heart it’s an adventure, a tale of revenge and what it does to you.
Also last year I read another book that had a similar effect, Lesser known Monsters. It’s a horror story but it’s also a queer horror story about, well, monsters. Again I don’t want to inadvertently spoil it, but I love it and it’s the start of a series so I’m looking forward to where it goes.
Lastly there is a game that came out, also last year, called Spiritfarer. It’s an indie game and currently on Xbox game past and it’s just... it’s beautiful, fun, funny and, most importantly, it gave me so many feels. It was something I played constantly when I started playing it and I can’t recommend it enough.

Thursday was a pretty quiet day. I read some more of the Who magazine and watched Death In Paradiseand the Big fat quiz (and both were great and the latter was so funny!).
Yesterday was a mail day. I got the. New Klaus comic so I ended up reading that in the afternoon and the new Mandalorian lego set came. It’s a nice little set and I love the child and new Mandalorian figures. Mum absolutely loves the little speeder and the carrier for the child at the back.
It seems that republicans are starting to abandon trump, like rats leaving a sinking trip (apologises to rats for the comparison). To me it feels too little too late. Same with twitter finally suspending his account. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad they’ve done something but it’s like that spongebob gif of ‘we saved the city!’ With said city burning in the background.
It seems there’s been fresh MCR twitter nonsense but as I’m blocked by most involved I had no idea till last night. Seems someone posted nsfw art on their twitter and people were complaining because ‘minors followed them’. (I’ve not seen the art so can’t comment on if it actually was nsfw or not.) to me it just goes to show that minors should not be in fandom following adults and then harassing them. I still do not understand how mcr has so many minor fans and how they think acting in such a manner is appropriate. It just puts me off the band and the fandom altogether.
Ugh.
I went on Valhalla a bit more last night and I’m still disappointed that they never sorted the Yule stuff. I was amused that one quest had someone pull a Padme and use a decoy and I still, unreasonably, love Ivarr. I think I picked out on something the other night about what feels off about it compared to recent games. In Odyssey and Origins you were fighting to save your homeland from the order of the ancients influence but with Valhalla you’re a stranger in a strange land.
Today I’m gonna catch up on some stuff on players, plus there’s new masked singer and maybe Men In Black International.
