So after my post last night I had a mini pizza and watched the first ep of Nightfliers on Netflix.

It’s... intruiging. Obviously the first ep of anything is set up, acting as an introduction to the premise and characters. It did it pretty well, though of course things are unclear (after all there is a mystery to solve). It’s rather... brutal too. It’s not something that can really be binged either. I’ll definitely watch more but it is something I’ll watch one episodes at a time rather than all in one go or over a weekend.

I then watched a Qi on Netflix and started the new Night Vale, though I did end up dozing during the weather. I did end up finishing it up this morning and it was pretty good.

I spent most of the morning in bed which I really needed. I forgot how exhausting being all at gigs was. After Night Vale I put on Sappenin cause this one had Gavin on so double the Welsh. The highlight was definitely them saying the Rhys put ‘a big purple cock’ on Matthew’s mic one gig which is just a hilarious image. It also made me miss The Blackout more of course.

This I spent so long in bed there’s not time to watch Solo alas but that’s ok. I did watch Star Wars All Stars after taking the pup out, which was pretty funny.

After that I put on the new Star Trek Discovery, thoughts under the cut.

While the last ep was more of a stand-alone this one was definitely focussing on advancing the plot strands of the series. So I’ll cover each them indivually.

First there’s the Spock plot line. This involved his mother coming out see Micheal, with some stolen medical files. It revealled a few more things, like that Spock has (apparently) killed his doctors and fled starbase 5 to parts unknown (and its being kept quiet). It’s also confirmed that Micheal did something to screw their relationship up, though how is unclear. Obviously this is something that’s going to be resolved over the course of the series, so I don’t expect answers soon. (In fact I’m a little surprised we got more Spock info this early on.)

Tilly’s story also progressed. ‘May’ from the last episode showed up again and definitely confirmed they weren’t friendly, instead using Tilly to get to Stamets for reasons unknown. It’s unfortunate that she almost screwed up Tilly’s chances at the programme, but I’m glad she told Micheal and got more insight into it. What ‘May’ wants with Stamets is likely to be the subject of the next episode. Could it be with how Hugh comes back?

The main storyline however is to do with L’rell and the Klingons. It was good to see the hologram of the old D7 from the original series, conceived her as being a method of uniting the houses under one banner. Hopefully that succeeds. The course of the episode saw her deal with doubters and her relationship with Voq/Tyler as well as reveal they had a child. As such it had a lot of info as well as featuring a fight between her and one of her rivals which got surprisingly bloody. Of course the ending was a little sad, with her giving up her child and Tyler for her position as leader but I think it cemented it well.

As for that decision it was spurred by Phillipa (whose appearance would’ve been more effective had the titles not listing Michelle). Working now for section 31 she came in at the last minute, killed some Klingons (again fairly bloodily) and then giving L’rell a choice. How she convinced her was off screen which was a good call I think and then she recruited Tyler to section 31 on a fancy ship. It’ll be interesting to see if she shows up again (or uses that ship in her own series), but she was a definite highlight.

Overall a pretty good episode which has advanced things and added a few more mysteries as well.

I’m gonna have noms soon and then I may see about writing some more. Tonight, after The Voice I might watch something on a Shudder, or just go back on Assassins Creed some more, we’ll see.

Would you recommend Nightfliers to someone who likes horror but isn't a sci-fi fan? (aka me)

It's fine for me if it's like ALIEN, for example. I'm cool with horror and sci-fi as a mixed genre, but only if horror gets its time to shine.
