Last days have, again, been kinda low energy. That was cause of Monday’s trip but also another yeaterday

I had to head down to sainsburys to pick up some stuff mum ordered, which ended up being annoying cause it was a warm day. On the plus side I did got to TK and got 3 more Agatha Christie fancy paperbacks: The Big Four, Mystery On The Blue Train and Poirot Investigates. And I was also able to use a Burger King code for the loaded force fries which were so nice I’m definitely gonna get more

The low energy did mean I woke up feeling… bleh. Followed by drilling sounds briefly outside that made it worse. But ugh my uni motivation has just… totally gone.

Also my mood hasn’t been helped that the iPad had an update with the stupid age verification thing, but of course it’s implemented badly. It doesn’t recognise either my card or ID, or the pact that there’s stored payment info. Apparently it’s an issue with a lot of people but… ugh. I hate this age verification bull they’re imposing on us.

On a plus side Star Fox was surprised announced last night and it looks pretty cool.

I had hoped to read some Free Comic Book Day comics today but only read 2. (I did order some of the ones I missed out on though).

First was Minotaur. I knew nothing whatsoever about this. It’s a new thing so it’s a little prologue, plus preview of the first issue. 5 years prior to the story a singularity happened in a data Center, it was stopped but there was enough time for strange things to seep into the world. A guy that knows about it has recruited a reporter to investigate and reveal what’s going on. I’m intrigued enough by the premise that I might get the first issue when it comes out (especially since the creator compares it to x-files)

Second was Lego Batman, which was very funny. It seriously made me laugh which I think I needed a bit.

I had meant to read others but alas didn’t. So Imight tomorrow

This morning we went to see the ducks and while we didn’t see any ducklings there were some baby geese and baby coots. Pics under the cut

Lastly thoughts on two other recent films. Insidious Tales and Warning From Space.

I watched Insidious Tales cause I saw it on Amazon Prime and it was just over an hour long. This was the description ‘ Across six chilling stories, strangers face the terrifying consequences of their choices as a creeping nightmare begins to invade their lives.’

You’d think from that description that the stories were all linked somehow but that wasn’t the case at all. It was pretty obvious that these were just six short films that were stuffed together into a ‘film’. Theres no linking stuff between them, it just goes from one to the next. The six tales are:

1: The Disappearance of Willie Bingham - A prisoner un goes a new punishment of ‘reduction’ parts are removed from him, with the victim’s family deciding when to stop. Easily the grimmest of the 6 and hard to watch, I feel this shouldn’t have been the opener.
2: In A Nut Shell - A Miniaturist is commisioned to make a model of a murder scene but ends up summoning an entity. This felt like it could’ve been longer, as it did feel a little rushed when the entity appeared.
3: Make It Stop - A guy seeing a therapist undergoes a procedure. This feels like it should’ve been longer cause it really ended up abruptly but it had a nice visual.
4: Sleep Tight - A young boy is suffering night terrors, or so he thinks. I think this one was the right length but damn it is dark (but I found from IMDb the boy’s therapist directed a vhs segment!)
5: Playing With Spiders - A cultist is contacted by something she believes is her god but isn’t… Yeah I was t gonna vibe with this cause spiders but interesting idea nonetheless, though the cult is really vague.
6: The Stranger (might be wrong, this title isn’t listed on the IMDb) - A couple is watched by a mysterious figure . This felt like the weakest one and felt too long (oddly).

I’d say Sleep Tight felt like the most complete (and Vanishing) but I do feel Make It Stop had the most potential if it was just a bit longer.

On Friday I watched Warning From Space, which I picked up from hmv’s arrow blu ray sale, but had been wanting for awhile.

It was released in 1956 and was one of Japan’s first colour films (and first colour sci-fi!). Mysterious lights are scene in the sky, followed by sightings of mysterious creatures. Then a mysterious woman is found in a lake…

The first half of Warning From Space is really good. There’s a nice vibe of the mysterious lights seen through a telescope and when the aliens land they’re really shot in a mysterious way. As to the aliens, they were my main reason for watching because here they are

Just look at them! They’re called Pairans and this is them aboard their spaceship. They are such a peak and I just love them (also their eyes light up when they speak!) I love their design so much. As soon as I saw them I knew I wanted to see them.

This scene on the ship also has a fun conversation with them, where they comment on human beauty and how strange it is, and how humans are freaked out by their appearance. They decide to send some of themselves down to earth, now disguised as humans to give their warning.

Up until they give their warning it is really effective. There’s nice model work, nice crowd scenes and the pairans themselves are so endearing. Plus there’s a sense of scale with news reports and someone at an observatory communicates with people in other countries.

The second half (I think it’s more last third) isn’t quite as good. The pairans give their warning to Japanese scientists but it isn’t taken seriously by anyone else. And then the pairans just… disappear from narrative (only showing in the last minutes) which just felt really weird.

Spoiler alert but the film is almost 70 years old

The warning is a ‘planet’ is on collision course for Earth, the Pairans suggest the we could use our nukes on it to stop it (one of the reasons they come to Japan specifically is that they knew the devesation one could cause). They’re not taken seriously at first cause earth can’t detect the ‘planet’ until weeks later. (I say ‘planet’ cause it doesn’t look like one.) of course its closeness means doom happens and theirs nice set pieces and crowd scenes, plus shots of deserted streets which are really effective. But I can’t help but think it’s weird the Pairans went to the trouble of warning us but didn’t stop to try and convince leaders or work on a solution when the nukes go wrong.

(In fact before they make the warning it looks like their purpose is actually to stop a scientist who is close to developing a power source that’s dangerous, though that equation comes into play at the end)

It’s also funny looking at how the film was marketed, as if the Pairans were either rampaging invades or as tall as buildings when they’re neither. They’re human sized and friendly.

All in all though it was pretty good. There’s no much in the way of special features on the disc, understandable since it’s so old so most of the people that worked on it are probably gone. There is a US dubbed version included though which I might watch sometime. Apparently it’s not just dubbed but reworked in places too. (At least according to the booklet)

Plans for the coming nights (provided energy isn’t bad)
*Next ep of The Pitt
*Back to Stranger Things Tales Of 85
*Pizza Movie
*Back to Heated Rivalry (finally)
*Back to The Beauty (also finally)
*Finally finishing Welcome To Derry (this is very much dependant on mood)

Also continuing Doctor Who run with Caves Of Androzani but that might be a daytime thing. (And I might rewatch Solo on Sunday too)

(I also might do a film post since its a third of the way through the year and I’d seen 20 films in the cinema in the first four months so that feels a good place to do an overview thing. But who knows!)

But now it’s time for Taskmaster.
