Before I get to the cinema part, I headed to B and M to get mum mints and look for a lightbulb for the oven light (I couldn’t find them). What I did find was a lil Stranger Things display, so I got fruit roll ups, a demogorgon tin (with some kinda sweets inside) and pop tart things. Plus I got a drink thing that was a game and some dice.

(Plus I picked up a Hocus Pocus bag from Asda.)

Before I get into the films there was the trailers.

Keeper (x2): Why do people in horror things keep staying in cabins in the woods? Have they not seen *unrolls list of films why that’s a bad idea*? I have been curious of this cause the cinema has had a poster of it but this was the first time seeing the trailer and I’m kinda intrigued by it?
Shelby Oaks (x2): let’s go! I had hoped there’d be a Shelby Oaks trailer today and it was (like Keeper) for both things. It was the one I’d seen before, but more importantly it confirmed the uk release date of Halloween. I’m tempted to see it if the cinema does get it then (which it should! It’s just not listed)
Chainsaw Man: I’d seen two eps of Chainsaw man on a stream once and it looked pretty good. I’m kinda curious, but like the other recent anime film I fear I’d be too lost.
Black Phone 2: it was the new trailer, yipee!
Good Boy: this was my first time actually seeing the Good Boy trailer.
28 Years Later The Bone Temple: I’d not seen 28 years later, but this follow up trailer makes me kinda curious cause what the fuck is going on?
Five Nights At Freddie’s 2: I think up this was the newer trailer, confirming we get it December 5th

Now onto the films.

Him was the first of the two films I’d seen. I heard mixed things about it but the trailers had made me curious. (Though if The Long Walk had been on an hour or so earlier I’d have seen that instead.)

Obviously I was not the target audience for something like this. I know nothing about sportsball and have no interest in it, nor the toxic masculinity that goes with sports in general. As such it was very much one of those films that I’m pretty sure I’ll just watch once.

However it was good. The whole vibe of the setting was purposely unsettling, located out somewhere that was desolate but strangely beautiful. There was a whole vibe to the piece of ‘how much is real or is it all in the main guy’s head?’ And the last 5-10 minutes feels kinda off the rails. However Marlon Wayans as the main guy’s mentor is easily the best part, he’s unsettling and oddly mesmerising at the same time.

During the break I decided to try one of the venue’s new pizza’s, which was called Sunset Slice and damn, it was really nice. I hope they keep it on the menu for awhile to have again. Like it is too much to have often, but I don’t mind doing it every once in awhile as a silly lil treat.

Next was the mystery film and when I booked it was quite packed! I love that the mystery showings are the showings that seem most well booked even though it’s the biggest screen. It’s nice that people take a chance on things.

I thought that this would be one of two things: Black Phone 2 or Good Boy. I thought the trailers might hint at which it would be (since Him had both I thought this would have one but it had neither). And I was right it did end up being one of them!

It was Good Boy. Which I was happy about since the listings said that most days would only get one late night showing (maybe they have added more though). First off I feel that this is the one film of the year where everyone wants to know a spoiler before seeing. So let me just say: the dog does NOT die.

The whole film is shot from the angle of a dog’s pov, so people are mostly heard not seen fully. (Think of cartoons where you don’t see the faces of the grown ups.) Somehow it works and the reason it works is the dog star of the film, Indy.

I am not kidding when I say he acts his ass off, like he could be the best horror actor of the year. I’m being totally serious. Like you’d expect from the subject that it would be a lot of him barking and growling, and sure there is that a few times but it’s much less than you’d expect. Honestly he’s so just so expressive and inquisitive and I love him so much.

By the nature of its protagonist you don’t find out as much as you would normally in a story like this so that might be frustrating for some, but for me it was fine. I did really enjoy it and it did get me with jumpscares a few times.

8/10

I missed a train by a few minutes again but got the next one. Though I was so pissed. On the way home I realised I didn’t have the Hocus Pocus bag (which had the stranger things drinks/dice, a Star Wars cos baby of Fennec Shand, a Halloween choker and bat that I got from a closing Poundland). I’m so annoyed at myself and cause it’s so late I feel someone will just take it (after all there’s no one there to hand it in to). I’ll call in the morning just in case though but ugh. I’m so annoyed. I might be able to get some of the stuff later in the week but the cosbaby was the only one and the dice/drinks only had another one. Bah.

I’m gonna rest now, maybe watch something (or game).

I got stressed about the dog just watching the trailer, so I'm glad he didn't die!

Also glad you got a mystery film you wanted to see.
