So it’s been awhile since the last song Saturday because I’ve been a faily. I was gonna do one a few weeks ago with Set It Off and Cody but just… didn’t. Maybe in the coming weeks.
However now I’m posting two vids, that I both watched yesterday and I’m posting them together because they have a similar (yet different!) vibe.
First is Funeral For A Friend, Serpents In Solitude.
Now I’d not listened to Funeral For A Friend for awhile, until writing the fic last week sparked me listening to them again. (I’m kinda sad I likely won’t be able to see their tour, both because of the venue choice and cost of the tickets both of which are ugh)
Anyway onto the song! It’s only one that I recognised by name, but I recognised it when I listened to it yesterday. And it’s pretty good but the main thing is the vid.
When
carrythefire linked it me yesterday I couldn’t remember what it was by name alone, but when I pressed play and watched I vaguely remembered watching it an eternity ago. I love the slight found footage vibe at the start and how the band are unconscious throughout, being manhandled and strung up, manipulated as literal puppets. Apparently it’s a commentary on how musicians are used as puppets by the music industry but honestly? It just looks kinda kinky.
The only bad thing I’d say is that there’s not enough shots of Rich, because long haired Rich is such a good look and we only get a few flashes!
While Serpents is 12 (!) years old, this second video isn’t even 24 hours old yet. It’s the new Lovejoy video, for Normal People Things.
So the new Lovejoy song came out on midnight Friday and because of the timing I only listened to it once. For me I feel that it’s a grower of a song. When I heard Call Me What You Like, I instantly loved it. With this it feels like it’ll a slower creep (though again, it might be because of listening to it late). I definitely like it more after watching the accompanying video.
The video has the band in various 70’s style outfits and poses and, for most of it, they’re barely moving. Their only movement is Wilbur singing and the others playing their instruments. (And I love Mark’s lil drum that they have for him.) Towards the end there is a brief section where they do play normally, but that only highlights the contrast of the rest of the video.
(I think my favourite shot is about 1:50 in, where Wilbur is singing looking dead at the camera and stays still, while changing outfits and the others do too)
The thing is that there’s also flashes of actual mannequins and it just seems to hammer home that the band are actual mannequins or treated as them. And then that last shot, where they go from being energetic to completely still, like someone said a trigger which stopped them it’s so…
(And yeah there’s absolutely being a kinktober prompt based on this concept because it’s so….)

There’ll be a more regular post at some point soon. (And I still need to post the round up thing)

Date: 2023-10-08 04:46 pm (UTC)Might be worth looking on twickets on the day of the concert, there were some going for £20 for Manchester yesterday and I'd have been suuuuuper tempted if I didn't have an early shift at work today! So you may be able to find a cheap ticket, you never know!
PS fuck off no way is Serpents 12 years old 🥴

Date: 2023-10-09 09:45 am (UTC)But yeah it’s such a good video and such a concept! I’m surprised you didn’t do anything based directly of it😏 And I’d assumed they were just drugged but them being dead gives off a whole different vibe too👀👀 it’s a shame there isn’t more long haired Rich in it because that’s such a hot look (damn him being injured!)
And I just watched the monsters vid and it does have a vibe to it! (Funnily one of the things I’ve been working on for kinktober also has a chase through the woods👀)
Maybe! Do you know where it would be good to look? I’d be so worried of getting scammed 😭
I know! I just looked and was so shocked! What the fuck is time??
(Also I’m curious your thoughts on the other vid if you watched)

Date: 2023-10-09 02:32 pm (UTC)Yeah that's a point. I don't know why I never did either. Tbh I always thought they were dead because of the shots of them just laying on the floor and the fact they've got clear bloody head injuries?
Monsters has a massive Vibe. I was writing fic about that video before we even met 😂🙈
And yeah twickets is here, you may be lucky: https://www.twickets.live/event/1632745314479771648
Haha yeah I went to the fucking TEN year anniversary tour of Casually Dressed before that EP was even a thing, fuck me lol 🥴
I haven't seen the other one and YouTube is mostly blocked on the work WiFi (I don't get signal in work so have to use the work WiFi) so I'll watch later!

Date: 2023-10-09 04:27 pm (UTC)You could always do one now, just saying😏 but yeah it’s a surprise you’d not! That’s a good point!
Oh you were?? Did you ever finish it?
I just checked and got excited cause I saw ones for £20… but it was 2 so it was twice that😭
Boo work! Yay!
Wow what the hell!!

Date: 2023-10-09 06:14 pm (UTC)Tbf around the time that EP was released was when I started drifting from them. Serpents is a certified banger but the rest of the EP was crap. And then I gave up on them entirely when Welcome Home Armageddon was so shit! So there was a spell where I just didn't want to do anything with them. I did come back when they released their final album, Conduit though! (We don't talk about Chapter And Verse, Conduit is the final album 😂 weirdly I've revisited it recently and it's quite lacklustre, I'm sure I remember it being better lol.
Yeah course I fucking did, but it has long been purged from my mibba account and there's no way it is still on any old hard drives. Sorry 😂 but literally it would have been written soooo badly.
Keep trying, there might be solo tickets added!

Date: 2023-10-10 10:08 am (UTC)Oh yeah I can remember some of that stuff wasn’t the best! Which is such a shame, I wonder why they took such a turn, especially on that ep with serpents being so good. Boo
Awww that’s a shame! I have meant to look back on the older stuff on lj, especially after doing that tumblr deep dive
🤞🤞

Date: 2023-10-10 02:34 pm (UTC)My suspicion is that it was Darran that wrote the bangers. Their recorded material was never as good when he left, and the handful of songs he contributed to with Accident Music had a definite old school FFAF vibe. And yeah Serpents was fucking brilliant, set the bar so high. Imo one of their best songs. But then I heard the rest of the EP. I had a fucking listening party with a friend on MSN (😂😂😂😂😂😂) and we were both bouncing after hearing Serpents, only to immediately get disappointed when the second track kicked in. Up to the Your History Is Mine EP consisted of all killer no filler! Kind of wish they'd done a full album with the Matt/Kris/Darran/Gav/Ryan lineup because holy crap those four songs were insane.
Mate please don't those fics are awful😂😂
Btw keep looking until right before the gig starts. They may reduce them right down so they don't lose the entire cost?

Date: 2023-10-10 02:50 pm (UTC)Yeah that definitely feels like the vibe! Or that he had some other kinda spark that made the others better. That’s a shame! It sounds like they put all their creativity into that and the rest of the songs had none, boo!
Awww I love them!
I’ll keep an eye out! I might be in Birmingham tomorrow so we’ll see. In a way it’s annoying you already have yours, because there’s so many pairs of tickets!
