A thematic carcrash

So today was very… I knew it would be anxiety injuring, it just wasn’t anxiety inducing in the ways I’d prepared for.
But we’ll get to that.
The past few days I’d been hunting for the drawstring bag which I took to the last lovejoy gig, which I got from an Elder Scrolls loot crate but have I been able to find it? No. Ugh. I ended up taking a cex one which at least feet the theme of my jacket with its red colouring.
I’d decided to leave earlier than I would. Usually if I’m going just to a gig I’d leave around 4-5 but this time I left at 1:30 cause I was worried about trains. Thankfully that wasn’t an issue and I got there in time (with enough token to check the co-op there had the dnd magazine so I can pick that up at some point) and it arrived only a minute late.
I got to Birmingham and the first thing I did was went to the smiths at the station. They had loads of the Sleep Token Kerrang but I still got one (and a Total Film/SFX bundle) so that was one thing off my checklist! They’ve moved the commonwealth bull into the station, which looks so impressive. It even moves and eyes light up! I honestly have no idea how they got that in there though.
I then went to the bullring and the hmv is closed for something, which is annoying, but I only wanted to go in in case it has Jigsaw/Spiral on offer, or as a back up for Kerrang. Then I went in the Lego store to look at the new stuff and they look so pretty! I love the insect set, though oddly the Ghost/Phantom set isn’t on display.
Then I went to the cinema, since I was there anyway and couldn’t exactly buy anything. I went to see A Haunting In Venice, which is the new Poirot film. I’d say it’s the best of the three that they’ve done so far, or at least my fav. It’s helped by it adapting something that’s not been done often (as good as Murder On The Orient Express/Death On The Nile, they’ve been done so many times now). It also helped that it really leaned into its setting. It was a really creepy location and atmosphere. And also it had Michelle Yeoh who I think is one of those people that’s always worth seeing. I’m not gonna say more cause it just came out, but I really enjoyed it.
Alas the trailers have mostly left my head. I know there was one for The Creator, and something called The Lesson and I know there was more but… nope.
When I left the cinema it had clearly been raining and was trying again, so I thought fuck that and went to mcdonalds. I was only originally gonna get some mozzarella sticks but decided I may as well have a meal as well. I also managed to nap some of the happy meal pokemon cards (I didn’t know they were a thing!) though it seemed someone was being a dick so I left pretty quick after that.
Since the rain knocked off I went to the venue. Gig thoughts ahoy.
this was my first time at the venue in a long time (since covid and more besides) and the queue was massive. I just have gone to the venue for about 5-7ish years pre-covid and this was way bigger than the biggest. Probably twice the length. It was so long it wrapped around a few buildings and, when I joined, it was back behind the venue with the buses.
Obviously it took awhile to get in but at least it was moving before doors opened. However when I got to the entrance I was stopped. Not because of the bag like I had expected, but because of my pad. No where on the site does it say they’re not allowed, but apparently it’s ‘been a rule’ for years and let me tell you my anxiety spiked. I was ready to just fuck it and go. In fact I almost did but the one security lady tried to calm me and another made calls to let me in (after trying to get it left with her, which I might have done but not when I knew I’d have to run for the train). I was only able to be let in cause I said I needed the big screen due to sight issues (kinda true, one of the reasons I hate phones is because of the ridiculous tiny screen and how small everything is, I hate phones and how everyone seems to need them. Also gigs if you only do digital tickets for a thing, then expect people with eyesight issues and other issues to use a pad)
And seriously that alone would have been enough. In fact it left a sour taste that stuck for the whole night. If it had been a one off event I’d have probably been ok but I’ve had three gigs in the last year. All three my anxiety has spiked. Two of them I almost left and headed home without even stepping foot in the venue. I really think I’m close to be done with gigs at this point and I’m fucked off that the next one (the blackout) is at this venue.
(It makes me glad I didn’t get the three gigs I was considering, Waterparks, Funeral For A Friend, because they were there too)
So I think I’m off gigs unless I can find someone to go with me (unlikely) or it’s someone I really like.
Once inside it took awhile for me to settle. I’d missed most of one support so didn’t pay attention, though I did see Mark from Lovejoy in the sound area having a good time.
I got a few things from merch, probably more than I should have and it was in large part because they had cards that they were giving out, though it seems that the whole giving out was I’ll defined and just ugh so I only got two. Both were the same but at least it was one of the three ones I wanted (and I can give my friend the other, she deserves something nice)
I managed to see Good Kid’s set which was pretty good. I might have picked up a cd if they’d had any. I liked they were nerds, one had curls and the singer wore a tank top. And I think the drummer was shirtless too. I checked to see if they had cds when the set ended (like I mentioned no) but they had a nice tee (I didn’t get) and free cards (which I did).
Then there was the Lovejoy show and I hoped it would make up for the earlier nonsense and just…
Ok plus points first. Wilbur’s shirt was unbuttoned and open again which was nice. There was an enthusiastic guy near me that looked like a punk Badboyhalo. I hoped they’d play my fav three songs and they did. And it was so sweet how kind and thankful Wilbur was
But as to the negatives.
Mostly it’s due to the heat. And yeah, gigs are usually hot and I was sweating, but I put that done to the anxiety from everything. But then people started to go down. And Wilbur had to stop the show for them to get helped. Now to me, that’s a rare occurrence. I’ve seen bands stop shows maybe twice in all the years I’ve been to gigs. Wilbur easily stopped the show three times that tonight and sometimes had to point multiple people in one stop.
It came to the point mid-The Fall he stopped the show completely and the band went offstage so people could calm down and get water. Again I’ve never known a band to do that. And it was so hot even I grabbed one of the waters.
They came back on and did three songs, though it was close to the train so I was panicking a bit. Thankfully one of those last songs was Portrait which is one of my fav songs and when it was over I prepared to leave. But then they said they had one last song and played The Fall in full, which as it was one of my favs I stayed for. Then I sped run to the train station.
Thankfully I got there in time and got on the train, so woo! No taxi! But now I’m back home I’m exhausted and thirsty and the whole thing has left me a bit bleh. (I fully expect Wilbur to kick up a fuss about this and let others know)
Edit: no wonder it was so hot it was oversold by 800 people!!
