I wasn’t gonna do another post this soon but I figured I’d post about what I ended up watching last night.
So after Silent Witness (and iplayering House Of Games) I didn’t really feel like gaming, so I decided to watch a film on shudder instead (cause it was the only thing of my monthly things I’d not watched anything on). It shows how long it had been since I watched something on there since it had signed me out of the Xbox app (annoyingly).
I ended up watching a film called Scare Package 2: Rad Chad’s Revenge. Thoughts under the cut.
Awhile back shudder did two horror anthology films one which I thought was ok, one which I thought was… less so. Alas I couldn’t remember the names, so when this came up I hoped it’d be the ok one. Alas, it wasn’t.
Horror anthologies succeed or fail based on the individual segments and there’s 4 segments along with a wrap around that ties it all together (I say ties, it doesn’t). The wrap around is the main let down, which I’ll go into last.
Welcome To The 90’s: This was actually quite a fun thing, being a parody of final girls and is my second favourite of my group (especially funny is the character called Buffy)
The Night He Came Back Again! Part VI: The Night She Came Back: The weakest one, it’s a follow up to a segment on the first scare package. It’s obvious about slasher film tropes, but it was just a bit… eh. Also the cute guy died boo.
Special Edition: Easily my favourite one of the whole segment, and if I’ll be honest, was my reason for watching. (It’s by the guy that did Host, with a creature designed by Trevor Henderson who does amazing monster ideas) it’s got a similar vibe to the ring (and it’s set at a lighthouse!) and I’d say the only bad thing about it was it was too short (seriously the whole concept could have been it’s own full film). Honestly it was worth watching the thing just for this segment.
We’re So Dead: kids stumble on a body and decide to reanimate him, but it goes wrong. This was kinda fun in some ways, but felt it didn’t have enough space for some of the ideas.
Framing story: The framing story is what lets the whole thing down. It’s a clear parody of Saw (there’s even a puppet as well as ‘live or die make your choice’ and ‘do you want to play a game’ said). You’d think something like that could work and work well, but the fact is it just… doesn’t. There’s characters that could be interesting, but they don’t get developed. The ‘games’ are mostly bad or eh (and the one good one, the found footage one isn’t expanded upon enough) and overall the whole thing just feels like a mess. It’s clear they know it too because at the end one of the characters says the subject line.
The anthology segments feel a bit shoehorned in and as a result it makes you wish that either the segments were longer because they’re better, or the wrap around story was it’s own thing (which might have worked better but…. Might not.
(Also one of the guys in it just looks like nerdy Pete Wentz and I just couldn’t get the thought out of my head)
So as a whole do I recommend it? It’s hard to say. The wrap around is so badly done that it’s hard to recommend but the segments are much better (especially Special Edition) and so they’re worth watching.
None film thoughts
