Prompt 7: Violet
Violet is a cheerful color that is associated with a variety of things including: originality, self-esteem, insight, poetry, discernment, understanding, creativity, music, perception, inhibition, and health.

Insight, understanding, and creativity are some wonderful qualities to concentrate on for our final 2020 prompt. Here we ask you: what things are you able to offer others to bring a little sunshine into their lives?

So we’re already at the last prompt, it seems to have gone quick but then again time has no meaning this year.

Purple is perhaps my favourite colour and yet trying to think of fandom things where it’s the focus feels tricky. The main thing that comes to mind is Welcome To Night Vale, where the main iconography is purple. But other than that...

I’m sure there’s something obvious that will come to mind later though.

So I’ll switch to the other parts of the prompt instead.

My creative outlet is usually writing but this year... it’s really sapped my creativity. When I do write it’s mostly band fic or, from last year, The Umbrella Academy. I usually write fairly short things, I don’t have the focus to write the epics that some do and I think my mind would wander if I tried.

As a kid I wrote poetry but I’ve not for years. I like arting sometimes but I have no skill for it so I mostly do simple things.

As for insight... I’m not sure I have insight in anything, not really.

For the last question... I dunno. I try and be kind. I mostly just post nonsense ( or pics of my pets or stuff from my games).

It's a shame I stopped doing the challenge as purple is such a comic!Clint colour. It would have been the perfect response.

You are kind, you always have a lovely comment and supportive word. I think that's a fantastic thing and you should be proud you always reach out to others when often not feeling the best yourself.

Oh yes, WTNV is definitely purple. Even the backlight in their live show (years ago when I saw that) was purple.

Yeah it was the same when I went to as I recall 💜 I was hoping to go to the latest tour in the uk but it got postponed and I bet it will again

I also had tickets for the May show. They rescheduled to August but we'll see if that happens either...

Yeah everything here has been rescheduled to later. Just yesterday a gig that had been put back to the day before night vale was put back till May so...

Haven't gotten an email yet as the theater it's scheduled to be still has the info on their site. But WTNV homesite says everything has been postponed, no new date available yet. *sigh*

I feel this SO HARD. I looked at my calendar yesterday and went "there's no way that can be right, who was flipping through the months?"

Sometimes trying to be kind is all we can do, and I think in some ways that's a huge contribution to fandom all on its own. Kindness isn't easy, but it makes fandom that much more pleasant to be involved in.

Yeah that’s so true. Especially lately because fandom has got so toxic (and not just in one fandom but it feels like every one has been... invested). Honestly there’s times when fandoms have stopped being fun. I’ve essentially abandoned one a few weeks ago due to it. I don’t get have people can be so horrible

I wonder whether it's a bi-product of the covid response. Many people are more stressed and may see that being horrible to someone you don't know and will never meet is a way to relieve some of the pent-up negative feelings. It's counter-productive, but I suspect we're all losing some of our balance and being less logical. It doesn't have to be that way, but sometimes being positive and supportive can feel like it requires a lot of effort.

Maybe it is, I dunno. A lot seem to be teenagers. (Just yesterday a load of them harassed an artist on twitter and just... ugh)

Time loop feels terrifyingly accurate. I keep looking at the calendar and just thinking "HOW".

I suspect fandom always had serious issues that I just didn't see, but the toxicity seems to have really come to the surface lately. I've had a lot of luck carving out my own little positive fandom space (through a combination of picking fairly chill/older fandoms and liberal use of block functions), but every now and then I'll poke my head into something new and immediately go NOPE. People can be very mean about fictional characters and it doesn't make sense to me.

That’s true, though it has definitely gotten worse with the toxic elements more vocal. Yeah I’ve found that I use the block button a lot especially lately. But good for you finding chill ones! I wish I had chill ones too

You know, I've never listened to Welcome to Nightvale (I'm hard of hearing and have a rough time with podcasts in general), but I also thought of their logo!

And you have left many kind comments during this challenge alone, which is a wonderful bright spot in people's days. It's just so easy to be negative, especially this year. I think the anonymity of the internet helps people forget that there are humans on the other end, who are also struggling and maybe not in the best place to receive even more negativity (especially for something fannish or otherwise Not That Important). Anyway, I think I lost my train of thought a bit here with this comment, but what I'm trying to say is that I have greatly appreciated the folks who took part and were kind. ♥ It certainly helped me at least.

Time is crazy this year.At some points it feels like the month will last forever and then suddenly it's over?!O_o
Gosh,I wish I could write epics but I simply run out of creative juice or the will to write even if I have ideas in my head. Why can't they just write themselves?!

Yeah exactly! My creativity was ok early this year and then once lockdown happened it just... started to drain away. And now my mind is like ‘nope’. We need to invent fic writing machines

I couldn't think of many purple things related to fandoms either. Which is weird, because it seems like a color that would come up a lot.

It is entirely appropriate that in a post about time having essentially no meaning that Night Vale and its fractious relationship with time and clocks should appear. And that it's also conveniently violet, the color of the logo. It's been a rough year, and I think time got really wonky officially right about the time the first lockdowns happened.

I forgot about Welcome to Nightvale, but, yes, I can see the purple in my mind now. I haven't listened to it in ages. (No memory of where I left off either, so I think I'd start again at the beginning.) Thanks for the reminder.
