So this is the inevitable film post which is gonna cover 4 films, though the first two more briefly.

The films are: Until Dawn, The Rift, Another World, Iron Lung. First two under this cut, second two a little later

Until Dawn

So when I went to my eye appointment in November I picked up two films: Clown In A Cornfield (which I’ve not rewatched yet) and Until Dawn both on sale.

It’s based on a game (which I’ve seen some gameplay for but not played myself) and it makes the decision not to be a straight adaption, but with (mostly) new people and does it’s own thing. I'm sure that decision didn’t go down well but I can see why it was done to give them creative freedom with it.

Persoanlly I liked it, it played out a little like Cabin In The Woods but with a time loop. (In the sense that each loop had a different threat to inspire fear.) I can definitely see myself watching again. And yeah to an extent it is a standard ‘Young adults end up in a location and bad things happen’ but I think the time loop makes it different and I mostly liked the characters.

It’s also clear that part way through production they decided to change things, there’s several alternate scenes in the deleted scenes which shows it almost went differently (notably a presence of a werewolf and a final confrontation in a church) and I wonder what made them switch.

The Rift

A few days ago I saw a thing for a film called The Rift on Amazon prime so I decided to watch because it was an underwater thing. The premise was an experimental submarine has gone missing so they sent another sub after them to find out what happened to it.

For the first half it’s promising, with the sub going down, people clashing and when they get to the titular rift they find a usual weed and a giant sea monster.

…and then it goes off the rails.

They go into some tunnels chasing the black box of the sub and they find that there is a lab down there and there’s some experiments taking place here making mutants and it’s just??? What? It felt like a baffling direction to take and makes no sense. (Meanwhile samples of said weed escaped the lab and were killing people.) as such I left feeling disappointed, which is a shame cause the start was so promising.

(And I felt more comfortable discussions spoilers for this cause it’s 35 years old)

Yesterday the weather was fine, not bad like I feared (causa the weather app) so I went to town.

Before heading out mail came which was something mum ordered but also the micro sd for the switch 2 huzzah I can game more and take screenshots again! Also there was the new Funko of Will which was meant to come Wednesday so that was a surprise. He looks so cool using his powers. (And in town I wandered round and got the new Vecna)

So onto the films! (Most of this written last night at the station)

Another World

So first off was Another World, which included a q and a with some of the creators. (They were at another table when I had my pizza I suspected it was them but hadn’t been sure)

The film didn’t have any trailers as it was a q and an after, but there was a fancy post board for it and people gave us card things with pictures of the film which are so pretty. (Here’s a pic of the board)

As for the film itself it’s pretty hard to define. I saw the trailer last night and thought it looked so pretty and it really is. And yet it’s also so brutal, which I really did not expect at all.

The story is about a soul keep, a cute lil guy called Gudo. His job is to ferry souls to a waterfall and when they pass through it they get reincarnated. The setting for this is the titular Another World and it is really beautiful. Guido’s latest person is a young girl who is looking for her brother. He doesn’t understand why but agrees to help her.

The film isn’t told linearly at the start, so you have him helping a lost girl and then the scene switches to a princess. She’s lost her father and doesn’t know how he died. Was it an assassin? A soldier that betrayed him? Or by his own hand? At first you’re not sure how the stories are connected and the Gudo appears offering to help her get answers by showing her the past.

How the two stories (and a later third one) is connected isn’t clear until about 3/4’s of the way in so since that’s probably a spoiler I won’t touch on that.

What I will touch on is the aforementioned brutalness. The Another World is beautiful, but the human world? Not so much. People die. A lot. Some it’s just the implication with bloodstained clothes, but others is much more blatant. There’s whipping that draws blood, there’s decapitation, there’s loss of limbs and that’s not all. The juxtaposition is so shocking because I wasn’t expecting it and you wouldn’t if your impression of the film was from the poster. You’d assume that the first story was the main focus of the story (and even that end up being shockingly horrifying)

There’s a lot I liked, the design of the wraiths, Gudo and another character, his protector called Dusk Sky who is so cool. As I said the whole Another World is beautiful and if the film was solely set there I’d not have minded one bit. As it is it’s an interesting story, about how awful humans can be but also about redemption.

The q and an after was interesting. It took 7 years to make, was based on a Japanese novel (the thousand year ghost) and is there first international release. You can really tell that they’re pleased to do this stuff and that was nice. I hope it does well for them.

I dunno if the cinema does this stuff often (this is the first one I’ve seen since starting) but I hope they do more cause I’d so go for them.

Iron Lung

I wasn’t sure about seeing Iron Lung cause of the lateness (it’s only showing one showing a night, last night was 8:45) but I figured since I was there already. And damn it was packed when I picked my ticket. There was about ten seats left, mostly in the first two rows but some scattered around. Also it was funny cause it was in the same screen as Another World.

Iron Lung didn’t have any trailers either, though that seems a mistake on the part of the cinema (there was the q and a image still up and I think trailers were being played just not to us, as we caught the end of Send Help.

Like Return To Silent Hill it’s based on a game, the titular Iron Lung.(which I have seen game play of). The Iron Lung refers to a submarine that a man, Simon, has been welded into. His mission, to be sent down to explore an ocean of blood. (After an event called the quiet rapture, which has made most of everything disappear)

The film is essentially set in one location with Simon (played by Markiplier), exploring this ocean, dealing with problems with the sub and what’s down there.

By all rights it probably shouldn’t work. 2 hours alone with one character in one space shouldn’t be engaging and yet it somehow is. That’s all down to Mark and it’s a testament to how talented he is, both as an actor and writer.

I’m not gonna say too much else cause spoilers, but honestly, if Iron Lung remotely sounds like something you’d wanna see go and see it. i know it’s not for everyone (cause it is a horror and there is a lot of blood, cause blood ocean) and I know it’s sold out in place but… go see it.

And honestly, good for Mark, it’s already made its budget several times over and that’s only after two nights. That says a lot considering it’s had no traditional publicity and it’s an indie production.

Today’s been a low energy day since I came back after midnight, but I did catchup on some stuff (Would I Lie To You, Death In Paradise, QI XL) but the main thing for today was the film I won from sfx arrived! I had to chase it up earlier in the week but it’s here.

It’s so funny that my second 4K film (after Trick R Treat) is this completely random film I know nothing about. I’m curious though and will likely watch in a few days. It is a pretty cool cover though

Though I’m gonna watch Ranboo’s watch of Marble Hornets and maybe poke my brain (and watch Horror’s Greatest maybe)

The format for Another World sounds interesting with the Q&As attached. I'm glad you enjoyed both films.

Meanwhile, at my cinema visit yesterday I saw Kangaroo, about a weatherman bringing up baby kangaroos. The total opposite end of the genres to yours *g*

I am so curious about the Iron Lung movie. Most of the gameplay I've seen wraps it up in less than an hour, so I have no idea how they stretched it out to feature length. Good for Mark though! I think it's playing here in a few places, but given the buzz it's getting, I have a feeling it'll get on more screens soon.
