shadowhive: (Cole Cute)
[personal profile] shadowhive
So when I was doing my top five cinema films of 2024 I had the issue that I saw… 5 films in 2024 (and one was the rerelease of Episode I). With 2025 I have the opposite problem, because in 2025 I saw 31. I had intended to make my top films but it was so hard to order them. (I was just gonna do a ‘here’s my ten films of last year with no order’ but it was hard to settle on the last few.)

A few days ago I saw [personal profile] rhoda_rants post about the films they saw last year so here I am doing mine. Note it’s unwieldy (cause 31! But I’m intending to do a small paragraph on each then add two key things: would I rec it and will I watch again. (For more in depth thoughts, look through the film thoughts tag)

(Also I may add a few non cinema films at the end too)

The order of this is simply in the order I saw them.

(And oop this has taken days to do cause my focus has been so off😭)

A Minecraft Movie

Video game movies are always a tricky prospect. For every good one there are so many misfires. The thing about Minecraft is it’s more creative and so can go anywhere but still this was an odd direction. (It probably should have been a full animated thing but I digress.) The plot is basically that a group of people get transported into the Minecraft world and hijinks and adventure ensue. As a concept it’s been done plenty of times and obviously better too, but I dunno. I liked it, it was fun and silly. It’s a good ‘switch your brain off’ type film. (I’m not surprised a sequel is coming and hope it gives it more depth)

Would I rec it: Yes
Would I watch again: Yes

Thunderbolts*

The trailers for Thunderbolts gave off the vibe it was an Avengers type thing, with the titular team being gathered together to fight off a threat. I was surprised that it didn’t go that way, instead with them being bought together for a completely different reason and teaming up and forming a bond, but it worked really well. It all somehow worked and it was surprising how it touched on mental health with the void. (Plus it’s always good to see Bucky)

Would I watch again: Yes

Sinners

Sinners is a vampire film set in 1932. Once the story gets to the Juke joint it really kicks off there’s a beautiful shot with music (a surprising theme is the power of music) and when the vampires do attack it is pretty scary. It rips really well done and definitely worth a watch, at least once.

Would I rec it: yes
Would I watch again: Probably

Clown In A Cornfield

In some ways, especially at the start, Clown plays out like a standard slasher film with a clown stalking and killing teens. Then it takes a turn midway through when the clown is seemingly beaten. It’s based on a book and I hadn’t read it beforehand (but have now which makes me wanna see and pick up changes). It also gets a huge plus for the unexpected couple of Cole and Rust who I love so many.

Would I rec it: Yes!
Would I watch again: Yes! I have the blu ray and only haven’t watched again cause I got it just before the Christmas (and the stress and busyness) set in

Jurassic World Rebirth

This is, in some ways, a standard set up. A team is gathered to go to somewhere dangerous to get something. In this case set team is going to an island of dinosaurs to get samples from various species. It’s a fun time and the dinos do look great (plus there’s also a subplot with a stranded family that is better than I expected)

Fantastic 4 First Steps

This was the first film I used my pass on (and you can see that’s where my cinema watching really ramped up). It was a risk to have the Fantastic 4 as an established team on another world (without doing an origin story) but it really works. The team have a natural chemistry and I love the retro futuristic vibe (plus I loved the trip to space and also HERBIE). Johnny Storm is hot in both senses of the word. (I kinda wish there was another solo film with them before doomsday)

Would I watch again: yes! And in fact I already have

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Like Scream a few years ago this is a new entry in the series but with the same title as the first. Which is..
I dunno why that’s a choice. It’s a slasher film and it plays out which as you would expect, but it’s done pretty well and I enjoyed it more than I expected.

Would I rec it: yes
Would I watch again: probably

Superman

Like with Fantastic 4 this version of Superman isn’t an origin story but has him already being established. Again this somehow manages to work (despite the info dump text at the start). It does a lot, there another team of heroes, there’s a conspiracy with Lex and Superman still managed to be a good boy. I’m not usually a DC person but this has made me excited to see the direction of the new DC universe.

Together

Together is a film where something happens to a couple, leading to them being drawn together. To say more delves into spoiler territory. It was one of those things that I was intrigued by the trailers and I am glad I saw it, but it’s also a… watch once type film you know? I might watch again far in the future if it’s on tv but it’s not something I’d hunt down.

Would I rec it: maybe
Would I watch again:probably not

The Naked Gun

Like I Know What You Did Last Summer, this is a continuation of a series with the same title as the first entry. It’s not quite as silly as the original entries, but it’s still pretty fun. Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson do a good job carrying the film and have surprisingly good chemistry together.

Weapons

This is one of those films that you need to go in blind ideally. It’s about kids that go missing one night and the film is dealing with the mystery and the fallout (all of the kids were from one teachers class, so of course people are suspicious of her). It’s tiled through segments of multiple chapters (each one following their own story) and that’s a thing I always really like and it works so well.

Freakier Friday

Ok I admit it, I went to see this for Manny Jacinto. I can’t help it, he’s hot. I watched the first movie for the first time just days before seeing it. The new one was fun, it was a good time and I’d definitely see it again sometime.

Would I rec it: yes
Would I watch again: yep!

The Toxic Avenger

This, like Together before it (and Good Boy later) was a mystery film so I didn’t know what it was gonna be until it started. From the opening scene you just know this is gonna be a fun, silly time. It doesn’t take itself seriously and Kevin Bacon is clearly loving being an over the top villain.

Would I rec it: yeah
Would I watch again: yep

Honey Don’t

This is a film I took a chance on, I wanted to see Jaws and something else so watched the trailer and figured it looked interesting. And it is! It’s a detective story, with a private detective looking into a murdered girl but what sells it is said detective. Honey is awesome, she’s so cool and funny and I love her. Also she’s unashamedly lesbian (and has sex with Aubrey Plaza’s cop, with feels like someone wished into existence).

Would I rec it: yeah
Would I watch again: yep (my friend just mentioned it so it’s sparked a want to watch)

Jaws

So last year was a big Jaws anniversary so, since I had the pass, I decided to watch it. I had saw it years ago but I didn’t rememebr much more than the basics (a small down gets terrorised by a shark). It still holds up pretty pretty well but I think what’s most stark is how government officials just wanted to pretend what was obviously happening wasn’t, leading to deaths that were entirely preventable (due to ignoring warnings and experts). Sadly thay side feels more relevant than ever.

Would I rec it: yes
Would I watch again: probably in the future

The Bad Guys 2

The Bad Guys 2 is one of those rare sequels that’s better than the original. It’s essentially a heist movie with the ‘bad guys’ from the first film roped into helping another team steal some tech as part of a plan to steal gold. Yes the plot does get unhinged but it’s so fun too. (Plus the Wolf is sexy)

Would I rec it: yes!
Would I watch again: yes!

Curse Of Frankenstein

The first of two Frankenstein things on this list, this one much older. What sells this one is Peter Cushing as Frankenstein because he really nails the part. It’s a pretty small scale film but it really does its best with what it has.

Would I rec it: yus
Would I watch again: yes

Him

I saw trailers for this and was curious. A rising football star gets noticed by a legendary one, who invites him to his compound. I feel I might have enjoyed this more if I knew anything about sportsball. There is moments of good stuff and Marlon Wayans is great as the legendary footballer, but I dunno it didn’t had it as much as I hoped.

Would I rec it: probably not, unless you like sports
Would I watch again: probably not

Good Boy

Have you ever watched a horror movie and thought ‘what would it be like to see this from a dog’s pov?’ If you answered yes than do I have the film for you! Good Boy is a haunted house film told from the perspective of the dog Indy and his attempts to warn/protect his own. And damn, Indy puts on one of the best performances of the year. I dunno how they got him to act so well but he’s incredible.

The Long Walk

I saw trailers for this and was like ‘nah this isn’t for me’ but then I was convinced to see it. It’s the story of a group of boys going on a walk, the last one walking winning a prize. The catch is if you slow down or stop you get thre warnings then get shot. On the one hand there’s a lot of nice looking men (especially Joshua Odjick) on the other it’s depressing as you get attached knowing they’ll die. (I honestly dunno how people have watched it almost ten times already it’s gonna be awhile before I can)

Would I rec it: yes but it is pretty grim
Would I watch again: Eventually

Night Of The Zoopocalypse

An asteroid lands in a zoo and starts turning animals into gummy zombie monsters. It’s essentially a zombie movie but with animals and no gore. The art style is so beautiful, the characters are all fun, filling all the usual horror film tropes. (My only issue was I got stressed on the trip there and couldn’t focus as much as I wanted)

Would I rec it: yes
Would I watch again: yeah (and I need to cause I was too stressed)

Tron Ares

The main plot of this is an attempt by two rival companies to get a source code, which would make digitally created objects physical permanently. The cgi is pretty and it is great to watch, especially if you switch your brain off a bit (alas the plot is a little thin). I also like that Gillian Anderson made an appearence as the only sane woman in one of the companies.

Would I rec it: maybe
Would I watch again: probably at some point

Black Phone 2

Like Bad Guys 2 (a comparison I suspect has never been made) this is another example of a sequel better than the original. The grabber is dead, but when (the sister of Finn from the first film) strange dreams they go to a winter camp to find out what went down there. This makes great use of the isolated location, the creepy old time effect on the dreams and Ethan hawke’s grabber

Frankenstein

While with some of these things I’m cagey on details because spoilers, with Frankenstein I don’t have to be. Even if you’ve not read the book or watched an adaption, you know the basic story. A scientist, Doctor Frankenstein, creates a creature from body parts, bringing him to life. Honestly if you haven’t seen yet, go and see it. It’s beautiful, the costumes, the sets and just… the whole vibe of it is incredible. Like you can tell it’s made with love because it just shows.

Shelby Oaks

Several years ago a woman’s sister went missing in the town of Shelby Oaks, after a man shoots himself on her doorstep she finds a tape on him which leads her to the abandoned town. The first part of the film plays out like a documentary into the sisters disappearance (and so is found footage in a way) but this switches to regular filming just before the guy dies. It’s mostly a good mystery, making pretty good use of its concepts (especially since it’s a first movie from the director. I do wish it had spent more time in the abandoned town though.

Would I rec it: yes
Would I watch again: at some point

Keeper

A couple go to a cabin in the woods on vacation, when the guy leaves on a work emergency spooky things ensue. So from that brief summary you can probably tell that, in some ways this is a standard story but at the same time there’s parts that make it less so. It is a promising thing at times but at others it’s… not. It’s a hard one to describe in that sense, especially without fully spoilering.

Would I watch again: probably not

Predator Badlands

I’ve not watched the predator stuff but I caught trailers and was so curious. It follows a predator, Dek, who goes to an alien world to prove himself and along the way makes an unexpected ally with a synth. There was something about this that was just so great. Like they made Dek a likeable character, someone to root for, despite him being an alien and only communicating in his own language (with subtitles) and they also made this whole world, with an entire ecology. It’s really incredible and the ending is just so satisfying.

Would I rec it:yea!
Would I watch again: absolutely!

Wake Up Dead Man

This is another Benoit Blanc mystery (I hate the Knives Out moniker i dunno if anyone else does) this time about a preacher that goes into a room and yet he dies despite it being seemingly impossible. If you love murder mysteries this is a good one, though its setting means there’s a lot of the worst parts of Christianity.

Would I rec it:yes
Would I watch again: at some point

Zootropolis 2

I’m so glad that last year was a run of sequels that were actually good. This is a follow up to Zootropolis (I dunno why we get a different name) with Nick and Judy working together as cops and uncovering a conspiracy. If you liked the first one you’ll love this, there’s fun characters and world building which makes this all pretty interesting. There’s a twist towards the end I personally didn’t like but other than that I enjoyed it.

Pillion

Pillion is the story of a gay man who, at er a chance encounter ends up in a dom sub relationship. It was interesting to see something like this in a film, because it’s not something I’d have expected to see on the big screen. (And, while there is a few sex scenes, it’s not as kinky as I expected it to be.) There’s good parts to it but by the end I left a bit sad.

Would I rec it: probably not
Would I watch again: probably not

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2

So this was my last cinema film of the year! Once again it’s another good sequel as it improves in the first one, while also adding new animatronics and another Freddy’s location. Plus it introduced Michela who is a mix of hot, creepy and wet cat. It was just a fun time and I really hope there’s a third film (it’s set up for one and there’s some characters that need to interact)

Would I rec it: yes
Would I watch again: yes!

So I was going to do something from other things (ie each streaming thing and tv) but this post is long enough so I’ll just do one.

Blu ray
Wildhood

Wildhood is the story of a boy called Link who runs away from home because he found out his father lied (about his native mother being dead), along with his brother and a boy called Pasmay they go on a journey to search for her. So I got this because Pasmay is played by Joshua Odjick and he kisses (and fucks) Link. Like yep I know I’m shallow for that but I am easily motivated sometimes. What I didn’t expect was one of the best films I saw last year, full of heart and memorable characters (especially Pasmay). It gave me so many feels.

Would I rec it: Yes!
Would I watch again: Yes! (I’m already planning too)

Hoo boy that took much longer than expected (I think I started this Friday, or maybe Thursday and it’s Monday now). Hopefully I’m able to see my first films of the year this week but we’ll see!

(Stay tuned for a general post, snowflake catch up and maybe a year long meme thing)
