The weather the past days has been so annoying and I hate how sleep has been bad. Thankfully though it’s a little cooler today so hopefully it’s gonna ease up.

On Tuesday I saw the local co-op had Pokémon cards, a new box, so I went in hoping to get some Thursday but they had all gone already. Apparently they get they regularly but that’s the first time I’d seen them. I know they go out of stock quick in places but didn’t expect that here and in such a small store. If I see them I’ll have to get some.

I did get some blu rays from the charity shop up the road, The Wolverine extended edition (I didn’t know there was one?) and second The Lego Movie. I only saw that once at the cinema so it’ll be interesting to see it again. And speaking of blu rays I ordere the 5 seconds of summer one from eBay which came today, yay!

Thursday was also the annoying call which went ok. The guy seemed nice enough, if a little prone to oversharing and at least I don’t have another till the end of September.

In the night I watched the Black Phone, which I wanted to see cause the trailer for the sequel looked pretty good. It was pretty good. It was not sure how it was going to be given the subject but it was mostly implication, though a lot of what was said did feel crazy.

Also the past few days was Alien Earth. The first two eps went live Wednesday, so I watched one them and then the other last night. Thoughts under the cut.

I saw the trailer for the show awhile back and was suitably curious enough to check it out.

It starts with a mention about immortality and I’m like, if there’s one universe where I wouldn’t wanna be immortal it’s the Alien one. (I mean nothing in the films makes me even want to live there, even without xenomorphs running around) but that mention of immortality leads into one of the two main plots, which is about transferring minds into synthetic bodies.

The process does seem to work, albeit only being done with ‘young minds’ but the whole thing does feel… off. Like yeah taking children who are ill and putting them in new bodies feels like a good thing to give them a new life, but to cut them off from their families? That seems wrong and the whole thing just feels so off. Of course I could be wrong, but I am half expecting some reveal to happen along the series about it. (Though admittedly that could be down to how experiments in the alien universe have a habit of being unethical at best, dangerous at worst).

The ceo in charge of the project is also hard to get a read on. He looks like if Coy Piso was a tech ceo and for some reason is bare foot a lot. It’s hard to tell if he’s doing things with good intentions or… not. At least he doesn’t seem to know what the xenomorph is, just wanting the contents of the crashed ship because it’s from a rival company. (Plus his name is Boy Kavaliver)

The other thread is about a ship crashing down on Earth. This ship has been… somewhere and bought back specimens. It’s no surprise that one of them is a Xenomorph and this one feels especially vicious. It did surprise me there was a scene with the ships crew before the crash giving a brief insight into them. I didn’t expect that.

I can only guess the place they’d been was some nightmare world. The specimens so far have included
*a clutch of facehugger eggs
*leech like things that can drain a person in a few seconds
*An eye parasite that takes the place of something’s eye and takes over
*a mysterious pod thing that looks like it could be a plant but has a tentacle/vine

I know there’s other things too so I’m curious if we’ll see them but… what the hell?

Also it’s one of those shows that’s very ‘where do I know that person’. There’s Adrian Endmunson, Essie Davis (from Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and the babadook) and someone from season one of Andor and someone else from The Mandalorian/Book Of Boba Fett.

The production team have done a great job with the sets and stuff, the ship especially nails the aesthetic of the other Alien ships, with lots of flashing lights and clicky buttons and retro screens.

I am suitably intrigued to see how things will go.

Today I put on Freaky Friday, cause I’d not seen the original and am thinking of seeing the new one (thanks Manny Jacinto) and it was really fun! It’s impressive how well Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsey Logan nailed the body switching like it really felt they embodied each other. Plus Mark Harmon was in it?? I had no idea it was so strange seeing him there!

Tonight’s plan is to watch the next Marple and then watch The Loved Ones (which came yesterday). (And see what my brain is like for other things) Then tomorrow I wanna try and watch Section 31 and then Monday is Weapons (and maybe Freakier Friday too)

I'd forgotten all about Mark Harmon when I went to see Freakier Friday. I'm so used to him as Gibbs it's always a surprise when I see him in something else.

I hope you can go to the mystery film, I'm enjoying learning about them via you.
