Before I get into the main thing of the post, Uk people there’s gonna be MCR shows in London next year (details here) and tickets go on sale Friday morning.

I’m probably gonna give it a miss? Going to London is a hassle and it feels like the process will just be stressful. And, well, practically and emotionally I don’t feel I could go alone. But if anyone else is gonna try I wish you luck.

(I’m also still annoyed Waterparks just has one show in London too why does London have to get everything)

Anyway, onto the main post topic, which is about the film All The Gods In The Sky, which is a film that just came to shudder this past week. Here is the description, which is pretty vague.

It’s one of those descriptions that’s vague enough that could go anywhere but what caught my eye was the poster on imdb which is pretty decidpving for two reasons. One it makes out like tentacles feature prominently (there is an octopus in two scenes but that’s it) and the other is it makes out like the main female character is black which she is very much not.

Before I get in my main thoughts though there is a technical issue with it. The film is French so it’s subtitled. However there is an issue with the subtitles. Several times they’re just… not there. Simon has a conversation with his boss and his boss says a few sentences of dialogue but only one word is subtitled. A social work shows up and I hear her say telephone but that’s not translated at all. Also sometimes some subtitles flash up and go too quick. Like it’s not a deal breaker, you can still follow along with the story, but it does feel odd.

Thoughts under the cut, so they’ll get spoilery.

So Im gonna use how I described it to my friend by starting with that description. And this is all revealed in the first ten minutes. By severely disabled it means the sister is mute and immobile. The childhood game is finding their dad’s gun and shooting themselves with it, Russian roulette style. Liberating her from the world? He thinks aliens are coming for them.

You can probably tell from that if this is gonna be the film for you. It is pretty heavy, leaning more heavy into the ‘caring for his sister’ part than I expected.

Because it is pretty heavy in the sense that it deals with Simon caring for her and how she literally can’t do anything for herself. She’s confined to her bed or a chair for most of the film. And there is a sense throughout that her brother does care for her in his own way.

But there’s also the thread that he thinks aliens are coming for them to help her. (And here’s where the more spoiler thoughts are)

The film plays it two ways. On the one hand there are some visuals shown throughout of the sun and earth from space, as well as mysterious signals on the radio on tv which makes you think there’s gonna be aliens. On the other hand Simon is clearly not well. He’s seeing a doctor, he’s supposed to be taking meds (though clearly isn’t), he self harms and his doctor says he’s paranoid. It isn’t said what he’s meant to have but it’s pretty clear that thinking ‘aliens are coming for him and his sister’ could fit into a mental delusion and the ‘signals’ are just him imagining them.

As the film goes on it feels like it’s pretty much going for the second option but then theres enough ambiguity to make it unclear.

There’s also Simon and his relationship with his sister too. Again there’s times when he does seem to care for her and is trying his best, albeit that’s not what’s best for her. And then he does things like paying someone to have sex with her, beating a social worker (and feeding her to his pigs) and choking her.

And then the last ten minutes is a complete other direction in a completely new location and you don’t know what’s going to happen. (And the ending feels ambiguous)

As a whole it does its concept well and it was compelling enough to watch the whole thing because I wanted to know what would happen. It is a bit bleaker than I expected (if that’s the right term) but there are some really good performances both from Estelle (the sister) and a young girl called Zoe. And the guy that plays Simon does a good job of showing a potential decent into madness.

It’s not something I’d see again and it does feel hard to rec cause of both the subject and the subtitle issues, but if the concept intruiged than I’d say give it a watch.

Plan today is mostly to:
*go on a Donkey Kong Bananza to finish the tempest layer
*Fic some
*read some

Ooooh, I know you have very very good reasons for not wanting to go to the London shows, but--go. If you can summon up the savings and the transportation and even one friend to bully into meeting up with you--go. This tour is historic and terrifying in a way I don't think we'll see again in our lifetimes.

Back from our show as of last night, and just reiterating: Goooo! It was so good!!!! I am exhausted and blissed out and the girl sitting in front of me gave me an MCR bracelet she made herself!!! I love this fandom so much. 🖤🖤🖤

I really hope you get more dates added. It's so worth it. As for the ticket buying process, I heard that a lot of people had a hard time, either with getting seats at all, or having it being exorbitantly expensive, for this and for the last tour. But I dunno, it was a breeze for me both times. Maybe the Emo gods have blessed me, lol.

It is a very intense, loud, scary show, with lots of strobes and explosions, including skits of public executions, so if that sounds like a sensory overload, I'd skip it. You can always vicariously through me when I post my review and photos later.

I honestly prefer the smaller shows, but this is still quite spectacular. Plus, for the Philly stop they had Alice Cooper! I've been wanting to see him in concert for ages! That was rad.

I'm working on a recap/review as we speak, and I've got TONS of photos. Picking out the best ones and cleaning them up from my camera phone also as we speak. I'll probably update later this evening! (So uh, roughly twelve hours from now--I'm not sure how far ahead of me you are. It's like 6:30am here.)

A friend offered me a place to stay if I wanted to go to the MCR show, but sadly the tickets were just out of my price range atm. Plus, they went so fast, I doubt I could have got one even if I had the spare money.
