So before I get into the main post, I opened the MCC cards Monday and Tuesday. Overall it was a good haul with 2 signed cards and quite a few shinies. Unfortunately some of them are multiples and are for ones I don’t care for, so I’m hoping there’ll be ways to swap. I am sad I didn’t get the rare Seapeekay, all of the Purpled or 5up cards or the Techno cards. I dunno if it’s worth getting an overstock box when they do them (I dunno how much they’ll be) but people are already selling rares for £15 a pop. Ouch.

The official discord is gonna be opening up trades so fingers crossed there’s uk people interested in ones I have.

Also damnit! I was watching a Fandom live thing on eBay and the price went down 40% and I was gonna try and get it once I’d put my money in. Alas I just checked and it’s gone, fuck. I should’ve just done it on mums and paid the money in there. Ugh that’s gonna annoy me cause it’s so hard to find. (Anyone know a site that has it?)

Anyway today was the cinema trip to see Superman and the mystery showing. To quote Mamma Mia ‘it’s an adventure it’ll be good for you’ so that was my mindset.

I did spent a bit of time looking around the town beforehand, mostly cause of getting to the bank. But damn it is sad. There’s one shopping arcade by the bank and it was just… it had three shops. Three. That was so sad.

From a charity shop I got a DBD of somehting called Paradise Lost and Dispicable Me 2 on blu ray and a purse that looks like a fox. From Game I picked up a black series figure (Morgan from The Mandalorian/Ahsoka/Tales Of The Empire) and a Vulpix and Ninetales set. From Smiths I got the Fantastic 4 comic, though it was sneaky, and two 2025 annuals.

Then it was off to the cinema. Before I saw anything I almost gasped cause the price of the ticket to the Superman showing alone would’ve been almost as much as the month long cinema pass, which is so crazy. So just this trip would’ve more than paid for it.

The trailers for Superman were largely the same as Fantastic 4 - The Odyssey, The Running Man (why does no one simply hide in nature instead of be in a city?), a wrestling thing with Dwayne Johnson (I missed the name and The Life Of Chuck which I know nothing about but I was surprised when it said it was by Stephen King cause it seemed so… I dunno not scary?

Also the trailers for the mystery film . Not a trailer but there was a weird kfc ad that felt cannibal coded because why did a group of people dip a cute guy into water and he came out as a breaded piece of chicken?? Anyway! there was a trailer for The Black Phone 2 and it looks so good that I wanna see it. What is it about October 17th though? There’s the Coheed gig I’m thinking of going to, Pokémon ZA and now this. Then there was Him which I’m really curious about. Then there was The Long Walk which still hasn’t sold me though it is funny that Mark Hamill is in both of the Stephen king trailers (and I didn’t realise he was in walk until comic con. Them there was The Conjuring and Weapons as well as one for Jaws’ 50th anniversary which I’ve not seen in a long time so maybe I will.

Anyway! Superman thoughts.

So I’m not really a dc guy. I liked the old school Batman films, but I’ve not seen them in awhile and I really liked the flash and arrow verse stuff I’d seen (I blame my boy Cisco for that). Of the recent films I only watched Aquaman (cause Jason Momoa shirtless and wet) but I never watched the other Synderverse stuff cause honestly? The fans put me off. And then it was gonna be rebooted so I didn’t even watch the second Aquaman film (I really should though)

But I saw the trailer for the new Superman film and I was curious. 1: Cause it was by James Gunn and as he did Guardians Of The Galaxy I know he does good stuff. 2: the new Superman looks cute. 3: there’s a cute dog. 4: it just looked cool

And then it came out and everyone said how good it was so I was curious to see. However the timing was pretty bad cause of Jurassic World and then Fantastic 4. I think if I didn’t have the pass I wouldn’t be able to see it and, honestly, that would be a shame.

And honestly? I thought it was really great. A lot of that is down to the new Superman who is both handsome and cute and oh so earnest. He really sells the part and I hope to see more of him.

And also there’s Nicholas Holt’s Lex who manages to be the perfect nightmare of an evil tech ceo. Like he played the part well and by the end I absolutely hated him (ok I hated him by the time they got to the pocket dimension). Also it’s funny how Fantastic four and this both had black holes unexpectedly.

Also him using the vid of Superman’s parents felt so like a scene in Bloodlines were someone plays a holo of Leia’s dad telling her Vader was her father to the senate. Like that was so messed up.

I really liked the justice gang and hoped to see more of them. I was surprised Mister Terrific. Was the one that got the most screen time, but honestly I loved the scene where someone said ‘oh it’s the smart one’ dismissively only for him to kick their asses. (And I loved his ship)

I did feel sorry for Ultraman, an evil superman clone who looks hot unmasked and I think Superman could have fixed him by making out with him. Like I’m sure that would have solved everything. (Hopefully ao3 has some content of that)

And also I’m all about those nanitescovering superman’s head and invading his body that was so….

If there was a downside to it there was a lot throne at you. Like meta humans are mentioned as being around for three centuries in the opening text and that feels like that would have changed things a lot. Also it felt there were a lot of people and it makes me hope we see more of them cause I wanna know more. (And, of course, the conflict that kicks off the plot isn’t shown but is talked about extensively). But those are small things really.

I think those are my main thoughts. What did anyone else thing?

After Superman I decided to try the cinema food cause of having the discount. There’s a little restaurant and it has nachos, pizza and a few things. Apparently you can get the pizza sent straight up to you in the cinema which is strange. I tried a capri pizza which was nice enough, though they gave you a strange device that beeps when the food is done, which was strange but pretty cool.

Then I went up for the ✨Mystery film✨. What was it? Find out under the cut.

So I mentioned in a prior post I had a theory of what it could be. That theory, that it was gonna be Together, proved to be right!

It’s not out here until next week (oddly you can’t even book showings at the cinema which you can for other things) and I’ve not seen any reviews or anything for it yet.

My thoughts on it are… it was good, but it’s very much one of those films that I might only watch once. If that makes sense? If you’ve seen the trailer and like what you saw in it then I think you’ll like it but the trailer does a good job of covering the main bases of the concept.

(Warning at the start there is a scene with two dogs and there are… lots of distressed sounds from them. Like you don’t see much, other than them joined for a brief moment but the sounds…)

More detailed thoughts though. The main couple are Tim and Millie (and, bar the opening every scene had at least one of them) and they did feel a bit of a subversion to regular couples in these sorts of things. Millie honestly felt pretty hot and cold to Tim, complaining about him not wanting her despite moving him across the country. Proposing to him at a leaving party and then talking about them splitting in the next scene. He was obviously still processing trauma (from finding his dad dead next to his mom) and she didn’t seem to care all that much.

(At one point she even said something along the lines of ‘I feel just like your mother with you dead next to me’ which honestly felt so shockingly insensitive)

I honestly kept mentally screaming that he should get out of there, which I don’t think I’ve ever done for male character in… anything. (Maybe I have but none come to mind). But of course at that point it was too late for him.

The whole body horror stuff was pretty creepy, though it was Millie’s attitude that was worse. She didn’t take him seriously at all until the scene in the trailer where she had tied him up while he was unconscious and then used the saw on him. (It cut right away though so there wasn’t any gore which surprised me)

The scene of them together at the school was jarring if only because of how wrong it all felt. And was probably a red flag how that one guy didn’t just… call the cops on them for doing THAT in a school bathroom.

Diversity win! The creepy guy was is gay and was married to a man. I liked that it turned out the ‘found footage’ in the trailer was actually his wedding and… literal joining.

There are a lot of unanswered questions. Is ‘joining’ something that happens at that location naturally or did the cult do something to do it there? Is the cult actually gone or still active? Did the chapel really collapse due to natural causes? What’s the deal with the joined Tim and Millie? Why did the joining go wrong for the missing couple?

I didn’t expect to hear a Spice Girls song in a horror film, but as soon as it played I was like, ‘ah that’s why they mentioned Millie liked their album’. Cause they obviously name dropped it to include that specific song.

But like I said what it did it did pretty well. I liked the found footage scene and so many parts were pretty unsettling.

One worry I had was it’d end after a train came and I’d be waiting for 50 minutes for the next one. Luckily I could catch the train without waking. Funnily on the way to the station I noticed a restaurant called the Toro Steakhouse and then also a poster for Walsall pride. I didn’t even know the town had one?? It’s at the end of the month so maybe I’ll go if I have the energy. I might look it for more info.

I think Superman could have fixed him by making out with him

Yes! I totally agree with this thought.

I really enjoyed Superman, both him as a character and all the supporting characters and plot. Though I do agree some elements were glossed over a bit and could have given more detail, but that didn't detract from my overall enjoyment. Plus, Superdog!

I'm glad you enjoyed your mystery film, but yeah, I can see why it's not one you'd want to see again. Still, it's great you got something that caught your attention.

Finally, you're so right about the cost of tickets. I often think that myself, especially when some are around £15 for a prime time film.
