To remind us of the world that we lost

Post time! Mostly Who related cause oh boy that was a lot.
Friday night I finished the second Classic Doctors New Monsters 2 with Day Of The Vashta Nerada which may be my fav of the four stories. It’s an Eighth Doctor story and the audios of him always make me sad he never got a full televised series. But this was such a great story obviously it’s inspired by Jurassic park (one of the guys even has a name similar to Nedry).
Also yesterday I finished the year of Night Vale I was listening too and damn, I’m so glad that the university of what it is arc is over cause I hated Doctor Lubelle (even more so in those last ep) but damn her fate felt so fitting and so satisfying.
The rest of the day was spent distracting myself by watching Murder She Wrote and playing fortnite and generally avoiding the internet causa spoilers cause we get major warnings that something was going down.
Thoughts on the Doctor Who ep, The Interstellar Song contest which despite the name is not the fun camp ep you might expect. (And there’s gonna be major spoilers cause it’s an ep that, again surprisingly, has some)
I feel that if the interstellar song contest had been done in old Who (or even early new Who) it would have been more of a fun time that the name suggests. (I feel if it what been done then it would’ve been more about a contestant trying to sabotage others to win.) Instead you get what is described as ‘Die Hard meets Eurovision’. Not my description but it’s one I’ve seen used often (especially by the Doctor Who account).
I’d say that is a pretty good description but it’s also kinda more than that.
Cause at its heart is a civilisation that has been destroyed by a corporation, a corporation that sponsors the song contest.
(And after watching Andor I have to wonder if the corporation didn’t do a smear campaign against the Hellians similar to the Empire against the Ghor before buying their planet and destroying them.)
The villian of the ep, Kid, is from that planet and wants to make the corporation pay. And yet instead of targeting them he targets the contest and the people watching.
It’s interesting that Belinda and the Doctor got separated early on (during a horrific scene but then it was pretty obvious that she piled was gonna go down as soon as we saw it) and that Belinda got told the story of the Hellians while the Doctor was focussed to stop what was happening. It was obviously a purposeful choice (I’ll have to watch Unleashed to look into that) cause you just know if the Doctor knew the story he’d have been more sucessful talking them down. Instead his anger (which was totally justified) got the best of him. It is a shame that Belinda just… doesn’t call him out on it as much as she should have (or react in the full horror of it)
I’m not surprised that he didn’t stick around to go after the corporation themselves. For one they weren’t there. For two he’d got the urgent info of what happened to earth. But the bigger thing is that’s what the doctor does. They solve the big immediate problem and then just… go. Like I can think of at least half a dozen times they’ve done that so it’s perfectly in keeping.
But I did like that everyone was saved and Cora got a chance to sing the song of her people, which hopefully will lead to changes. But then again who knows. (And it’s possible the corporation will show up again and get dealt with then).
I find it really funny that in this timeline the last human is… Rylan. Like how did he survive whatever happened to Earth? And it makes the whole song contest pretty funny as it’s not based on human culture bringing it to the universe but in test it’s based on a tradition from a destroyed world that didn’t even make a galactic impact.
And of course there’s the two big spoilers.
Susan randomly appeared in the Doctor’s head, causing him to revive and getting him to stop as well as her saying to ‘find me’. I feel she is going to return soon, if not in the final then in season 3. Like it has to be a new driving thing right? You don’t just bring in Carole Ann Ford for nothing right??
And then there’s the final scene where Mrs Flood is the last one bought back and revived and promptly bi-regenerates and is revealed to be The Rani. Like that was the popular theory but I wasn’t sold on it due to how she acted, but I guess we’ll see. The bi-regeneration of her does really look and feel like the part though.
Though there’s so many questions. Why was Mrs Flood appearing everywhere? It seems jn this iero she was following the doctor to get his vindicator read outs but why? Mrs Flood was on Earth right before the doctor left.
There was no next time trailer either so what is the finale gonna be??
After that I watched the actual song contest and, like before it was good but felt… I dunno. And then there was the end were Isreal somehow came second and it’s obvious that it’s down to Zionists just voting en masse and rigging the system. Thankfully they didn’t win and Austria did but it’s still disappointing both they were there and people were giving then 12’s.
Bleh.
Today I watched Rogue One which I wanted to do after Andor, as many others have cause it’s the number 1 film on Disney+ right now. And damn the whole thing is so good but I’m surprised how many things just.l. Gave me extra feels this time. It wasn’t just the scenes with Cassian (especially the last one), it was Galen’s message, it was the sense that so much was sacrificed to get to this point. And also that Krennic had a very bad not good few days with leaks and how he ended up screwed over just like Dedra did. (And damn him saying ‘Who are you?’ too)
Now it’s time to poke the laptop before dnd and then… who knows?
