My energy has still been a but drained after Monday, so I’ve not been doing much at nights like I’ve hoped, mostly cause my eyes were too achy to watch stuff/game. So the other night I ended up just listening to audios (catching up on Magnus Protocol and a Who audio. The later was Tales From The Vault which was a really good concept, set at a UNIT vault that holds various artefacts and including recordings from prior companions. It was a neat idea and feels a shame they didn’t expand on it to more follow ups.

Continuing the Nintendo switch 2 thoughts there was day 1 of a treehouse stream yesterday and I watched it so you don’t have to (it was 4+ hours!). I did end up flagging a bit cause of the length though. Mostly it was playing through sections of the various games (and both Mario Kart and Donkey Kong got 2 sections)

*Mario Kart - Looks really pretty and it does look like it’ll be really fun. Someone did the sums and there’s (assuming every page of characters has 12 characters) 84 playable characters which seems crazy. No word on if you have to unlock them (I guess that’ll be in the direct) though I’m assuming stuff like free roam will include that
*Donkey Kong - Again it looks really pretty and some of the mechanics do look clever. Im not fully sold on it cause it seems to be destroying things a lot. BUT there is a cute lil rock guy friend
*Metroid - Looks really great, the opening cutscene especially looks suitably epic. I’ve not really played Metroid before but I feel I’d be tempted
*Welcome Tour - It looks interesting and there some cute mini game things… but it really feels like something that should be included on the system for free. I don’t see anyone paying for this
*Drag X Drive - I love the concept and the controls are original, but I’m curious if there’s any form of customisation cause all the players looked the same. Also I feel this is one game where you’d need a demo to see if the control system works for you
*Zelda upgrades - They showed some of BOTW side by side with switch versions and you could see the difference, especially in loading times. They also went over some of the Zelda notes features and some do look cool, especially being able to share things you’ve made as well as items. The many draw will be the new voice acted memories, though I’m not fond of them being tied to an app instead of just being in game

Day 2’s stream has started now so I’ll either post later or maybe edit here (first is Mario party).

Last night I’did end up feeling up to watching a thing, which was Hostile Dimensions. It’s a new found footage film on shudder which just came on the uk version (I dunno if it’s elsewhere) and I’d not heard it before but the description was interesting.

Synopsis time: While filming in an abandoned building a pair of documentary filmmakers find a mysterious door. After one goes missing the footage is found online and two more documentary filmmakers decide to find what happened.

Thoughts under the cut.

So the movie starts, as the synopsis says, with the footage of the first documentary at an abandoned location and it’s suitably creepy. You fully expect something to happen despite the brightly coloured graffiti thst litters the place. They find a random door just standing in a middle of a room and… the film goes from there.

Spoiler alert, though you could guess, but the door actually leads to another dimension (and not just one). And, because it’s a door things can (and do!) come through from either direction.

As a concept it’s a great one and something that should definitely be used more because this wars so well done (although it’s clear the budget was pretty stretched at times). Throughout they manage to show a variety of locations through the door from what looks like a straight up reflection, a beach, a seemingly abandoned church (?), a ruined city and an indoor amusement park among others. The sheer variety they show is pretty impressive.

The film is mostly shot as found footage but there’s occasional breaks, during interview sections other images are shown (like would be in a documentary) and the film is marked by ‘chapters’ which do work despite breaking the immersion a little.

As a whole the story is well done, especially for a 75 min runtime. I’m not gonna spoil it too much but you will get answers, as well as more questions as well as a laugh from one thing that pops up through a door multiple times.

Like I mentioned there’s a few times that it’s clear that this was done on a budget, as some of the creatures and cg is a little rough. But honestly I don’t think that matters all too much as I think it’s pretty well done on a whole. (I did expect more tentacles though, from the cover poster shudder chose to use)

Also bonus points, I’m fairly sure one of the characters is non binary so that’s a plus (they’re constantly referred to as they by their friend so I’m assuming here).

All in all it feels like a solid little film, I’d probably give it a 7.5/10 (though I’m never good at rating things). Solid concept, pretty great execution. Would watch again.

Now I’m gonna watch treehouse some more, snuggle Midna and then… I dunno.
