Song Saturday - Eurovision
May. 15th, 2021 01:30 pmSo next week is Eurovision do I figured I’d make this weeks song Saturday about it.
So I’m guessing people reading this fall into one of two categories, either you know what the Eurovision Song Contest is or every year you see people mentioning it on social media and are ????
So for the latter, the Eurovision Song Contest is an annual event that’s been running for over 60 years and, as the name implies, it’s a song contest. It was started after the wars, in an attenmpt to promote unity and it’s been pretty successful since it’s lasted this long. It started with seven countries and has expanded from there. While most countries are in Europe there are a few outliers, including Israel and, most recently, Australia.
There’s now so many countries involved that as well as the show itself there is two semi finals beforehand to whittle down the numbers. However 6 acts are always guaranteed to go through, ‘the big five’ who are the biggest financial contributes (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK) and whoever won the previous year.
Some acts are well known in their respective countries, while others are less so (most of ours aren’t really). The most well know act from the show is, of course, Abba which I’m sure everyone has heard of. Other acts have included Blue, Lulu and Celine Dion. And Jedward, twice.
A big part of what makes the shows so fun is the commentary, and every country has a different person doing a commentary in their native language. We used to have Terry Wogan, but now it’s Graham Norton and it’s so funny and snarky.
(More detailed info about the contest can be found here)
Here is something that gives a pretty good taste of what the show is about, from the interval act a few years ago. Love Love Peace Peace is so awesome and it’s funny and packed with references to other acts.
Last year the show had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, but this year isn’t going through which is awesome.
So I’m gonna include two songs that I’ve enjoyed from recent shows.
First from 2014 is Conchita Wurst’s Rise Like A Phoenix, which went on to run that year. It’s not a terribly fancy performance in terms of staging but it is one of the best songs. You could easily see it as being the main song of a film. And let’s face it Conchita’s dress is pretty and sparkly. It was such a well deserved winner.
The second song is by Hatari, Hatrið mun sigra and it’s completely different. I saw a pic of the guys before the show and was instantly intrigued because here were these guys in bondage gear. They wore the gear for the performance (and it seems to be part of their thing from what I’ve seen of their videos) and it’s very nghh (and then I found out the singers were cousins which adds to it considering how they are in the vid I saw). The song didn’t win but it did get to 10th spot which is pretty good for something that’s as non traditional as this is.
So yeah, I’m looking forward to this years. I don’t know any of the songs yet, I usually keep it as a surprise until I see them on the semi finals, but I’m sure it’ll be a super fun show.
