A purple heartbreak
Jul. 18th, 2019 12:42 amToday has very much been a day of two halves.
Mostly it was pretty good.
We took Naryu early, since I knew I had a delivery coming and it arrived on time. It was Doctor Who Season 18 and it’s so nice looking. I need to read the booklet soon (I love the booklets bbc do for the releases). I did email the bbc asking if they were gonna redo season 12 and 19 And it seems I’m not alone asking. So it seems like,y they’ll do a re-release soon.
I tried some of the new things from the shopping today. The falafels were nice, but the stuff I had for later wasn’t as good as I expected.
I did some stardew this morning so I’m at level 40 in the mines and my house is upgraded.
I had a nap, then watched the usual tv (and a new thing with Zachary Quinto and sea monsters). And I’d just started writing a short The Umbrella Academy fic when the night changed.
It seems some people saw I’d wrote a Waycest on ao3, so instead of being mature and ignoring it, they went to my profile and started harassing me on twitter. It was annoying and they are such idiots. What happened to stuff like don’t like don’t read? I don’t understand antis at all. It pisses me off.
One person did do me on twitter and was (at least) respectful, but they just ran around in circles towards the end. When asked what they hoped to achieve by the conversation it became clear they had no answer. A check of the feed seems to show them as at least openly being patronising, which is annoying.
It just pisses me off so much that people have this attitude and feel like they should bully people like that. I hate it so much. It threw me off my writing and what I was watching and it makes me want to do another waycest just to spite them.
Ugh assholes.
I might go on Stardew soon before sleeping

Date: 2019-07-18 11:32 am (UTC)As for the antis. They're not worth bothering with, really. You're right, don't like don't read should be the way to go, but so often it isn't. I haven't been on twitter so long I can't remember if it's an option, but maybe just block them next time and save your mental health?
Whatever you decide to do. I'm sorry you had to deal with that again.

Date: 2019-07-18 11:53 am (UTC)Yeah they piss me off, I did end up just blocking them all, a few without responding but it just baffles me their mentality.
Thanks🖤 it sucks. But I’m doing a Waycest fic out of spite now so...

Well ...
Date: 2019-07-21 06:58 am (UTC)It's a cultural problem. Much of the world today considers it okay to hurt people. If that weren't the case, very few people would do it. After all, people don't shit on the floor because it is embarrassing and appalling; they don't want to do it, so it happens very rarely. To stop bullying, we need to create a culture in which it is neither wanted nor welcomed.
These exist. People tend to think that the internet is all the same, but it's really not. It contains only what we bring into it. Anyone can create a nice little corner of it, as long as they set expectations and have some basic moderation tools to evict any trolls who stumble into it. I frequent a number of venues that have problems rarely if ever. But you have to look for those, be willing to leave places that are full of assholes, and be willing to put in some time to develop a congenial audience if you host a venue. I'm all in favor of assholes having their own venues to be with their asshole friends, too, because then they have somewhere to be other than nicer places.
Re: Well ...
Date: 2019-07-21 08:07 am (UTC)That’s so true. It’s funny, but a few weeks before this happened I’d set up a discord with exactly that in mind and everyone there is nice and friendly, which is so awesome
Yeah, better for the assholes to be contained rather than spreading it around
Re: Well ...
Date: 2019-07-21 09:15 am (UTC)It is getting worse.
People need to understand that cyberspace is like the Jedi tree. You have to choose very deliberately what you will bring in, and how you will handle negativity that other people bring in. A lot of times, I feel about bullies the way I felt about Kylo Ren: I spent all his screen time wanting to tell him to go clean his room. It's not scary. It's not powerful. It's just sad and embarrassing to watch.
No amount of censorship will ever fix this problem. Good moderation tools, which allow the folks hosting a venue to set its standards, are much more effective. But the real solution lies in teaching people that bullying is a filthy shameful habit so that they don't want to do it. After all, it's only gratifying when your life is already pretty fucked up. If you have a good life, you like yourself, you have fun friends, etc. then you don't enjoy hurting people in nonconsensual ways.
Oddly enough, I've had way more luck teaching people how to fix the world through storytelling than through activism. Fuck it, I'll do what works.

Go you! Thanks for making the world a better place.
Re: Well ...
Date: 2019-07-21 11:11 am (UTC)That’s definitely a good way of looking at things. I feel embarrassed about these people and I sometimes try and engage with them just to try and get them to see what they do is unacceptable but they don’t seem to get it at all. And then I get frustrated and block them.
I try and focus on the positive stuff usually as well. If there’s something about a fandom I don’t like I just shrug it off and don’t engage with it.
Yes! You’re so right! It seems to be that there’s no way of getting these people to see it though.
That’s strange! But I’m glad you found something that works
Thanks! It’s nice and friendly and, hopefully, encouraging people to write and such
