Journeys through time and space
Apr. 4th, 2026 06:40 pmYesterday ended up being a kinda tiring day. I was recharging from the late night cinema trip then we had to head out to get some stuff from the co-op (the one by the station not up the road, cause we had a voucher for there).
That meant I didn’t do much yesterday, just watching a random film on tv (Carry On Dick, which makes me wonder are the Carry On films known outside of the uk?), then beyond paradise before zoning out.
This morning I went to town again. I got the little Easter egg make and take from the entertainer, as well as a big plush of Nubs (on clearance, it’s a shame the young Jedi adventures stuff is reduced so often but then I’ve not watched as much of it as I should). Then got some bits for mum before the cinema.
Trailers:
Oddly there were two concert trailers before Arco, one for Billie Eilish, one for BTS. (So BTS fans, check your cinemas there shows being shown) I should really listen to them, I’ve only really heard the few Fortnite songs
Both films had The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer which made me squee. I’m so excite for it.
The Sheep Detective is one of those trailers that’s instantly made me wanna see it. Hugh Jackman is a shepherd who reads to his sheep. When they find him dead they take it on themselves to solve the mystery. I’m so so sold on this. It looks so fun.
Also there was Moana and Michael (Seen before), a new Minions trailer (I wanna see it) and Toy Story 5 which looks like it might be fun.
Onto film thoughts, first for Arco, then Super Mario Galaxy.
First I was a little sad for Arco, I think it’s only the second showing and there was only one other person there. I think it doesn’t help it only has one showing a day.
So the plot for Arco is this. Arco is a boy from the future, where people live above the clouds and can go back in time with rainbow cloaks. Arco wants to go back and see the dinosaurs but he’s too young to use the cloaks. Of course one night he steals his sister’s cloak and ends up in the wrong time stranded. Thankfully he’s found by Iris, who quickly befriends him and keeps him safe.
It’s very pretty film, with nice visuals. Both time zones are set in the future and both are distinctly different. Iris’ time has protective bubble domes, holographic tech and robots. There are hints that something is very wrong in Iris’ time (the domes are there cause there’s storms and fires, robots are serving as teachers and police, Iris’ parents have left her alone with her younger brother and robot guardian). However as the protagonists are 10 that isn’t explored, but that’s fine.
The story is sweet with the two leads bonding while they try and help Arco get home. The robot guardian Mikki is a nice character too and has a cool design. And there’s a group of guys that saw a previous visitor from Arco’s time that serve as nice comic relief.
All in all I really liked it and, since it’s partly done by Netflix France it’ll probably end up there some time. (Fun fact, Natalie Portman Executive produces and is also Iris’ mother.)
Next was Super Mario Galaxy was MUCH more busy. Like it was pretty packed, not surprising for a lunchtime Easter showing. It was also a 3d showing, which I’d not done for awhile. (And the 3d was really good in parts, especially at the start with the zoom in through space and a later one with stars falling down)
The plot is kinda basic, Princess Rosalina gets kidnapped, but is able to send a message to Princess Peach asking for help. Naturally a peach goes after her, with Mario and Luigi being left in charge of the mushroom kingdom (until an attempt to free bowser leads to them on the adventure too)
Visually this looks absolutely beautiful. All the new locations, new characters and races all look so so great. I loved seeing all the different races from the various other games show up. The music was great too with lil references to prior games themes.
It’s a bit of a shame Rosalina doesn’t get more to do but she does have a cool scene at the start (shown in a trailer) but it is cool that Peach does go off to save her with toad so she gets some cool scenes (including in a casino where she meets Wart). Bowser jr is a pretty good villain, even corrupting his dad after he seemed to be trying to be good (cou”d have been an act but felt real enough).
However! My fav character was Fox McCloud. (Come on is anyone surprised, I love Star Wars and Guardians of the galaxy of course I’m gonna be into the sexy roguish pilot.) He’s so cool and has his cool arwing and I need him to have a solo film stat. It is a shame they only revealed him the week before release cause that means there’s not gonna be merch of him which sucks)
I had got the vibe that it was bad but I don’t see that. Like yeah it’s not perfect, it could’ve pushed more plot/character stuff, but it was fun. And I’ve no doubt there’ll be more. And having Fix (and some other cameos(0) have given the opportunity for them to do more spcrossovers in the future. (Please bring Fox back or have his own film)
I felt too tired to do anything else in town so just came back home (plus it was ten minutes till the next train). Tonight I’m gonna bundle up, then maybe watch or listen to something (after magic arena for the week).
Next cinema trip should be Exit 8!
