I definitely feel you on Classic Who! That's one reason it's been so hard for me to get into. All the DVDs we have at the library just feel really random, and you could just drop in and watch one anyway (being self-contained, like you said), and I have done that for a few, but it's hard to see where the Doctor and companion are in their relationship when you do that.
