So this last night I watched the final J-Horror Rising film which means thoughts ahoy!
Noroi: The Curse - 9/10
Premise: Noroi: The Curse is a chronicle of paranormal investigator’s investigation into a series of supernatural incidents.
Ok that premise is VERY vague, even more so than for Persona. However I think it’s important that if you watch this you go into it as blind as possible. (Which is easy cause the fair is fairly obscure, but it is on shudder in the US as well as this boxset.) As such these thoughts will also be more vague and general for this reason.
Like I mentioned before about J-Horror Rising, this is the one film on the boxset that I’d seen before and I consider it alone being worth picking the boxset up. I watched it first as a download (I dunno where from or why I got it) and then years later when it was on shudder uk (though alas it’s left).
The film could be best described as a found footage, since most of the sections are the investigator and his cameraman on their investigation. However the footage has been edited together (along with other footage) by the characters themselves into the titular documentary (apart from the opening and closing minutes). As such it has a feel of an actual documentary, complete with dates showing a timeline and captions when people are introduced (though not always translated alas, so I assume they’re names).
What Noroi nails is the sense of dread that happens throughout, especially as it gets more clear that something absolutely wrong is happening. There’s also a few moments towards the start that you think ‘wtf is this?’ But the reasons for their inclusion become more clear as it goes on. Of course there are things that don’t get answered, but that’s part of how good it is.
I’m curious if anyone else has seen it and what your thoughts are if you have.
There’s a bunch of special features for it (including 13 !! Deleted scenes) so I’m gonna check those out later tonight.
However with Noroi itself watched that completed my watch of the J-horror Rising boxset. Overall I think the boxset was pretty good. I can see myself watching most of them again at some point in the future, bar Inugami. But hey 1 film that I didn’t like out of 7? (Well 6 cause I knew I loved Noroi) I’d say that’s pretty good.
I really hope Arrow does another boxset like this, because it was so nice seeing these films get a release and directors being glad that they’re seen for more people.

The past few days have continued to be fairly low energy, not helped that it has suddenly gone really cold. Yesterday morning I woke, looked out the window and there’s snow. And, while it’s pretty, it means it’s suddenly gone so chilly which… ugh.
Yesterday was spent waiting on the mystery package which came pretty late but turned out to be taffy someone got me as an early Christmas present, yay!
I also did a little more on Echoes of wisdom and I did the eldin rift. The Goron’s are so cute and I love Ugh I did feel so dumb, not realising I could lift an an echo with wings to use it to fly until pretty late. Oops. I did a little today and met some deku shrubs, who are so adorable. I thought it was sweet they said they found some cotton candy… only I don’t think that’s what it is…
I’m hoping the iffy, hazy feeling doesn’t stay and goes away before the gig next week. I’m also not looking forward p to mums friend coming Saturday.
Tonight’s plan is to watch the Noroi special features and maybe start Alan Wake 2, but we’ll see what my energy/mindset is like.
