Sunshine Challenge 2022 - Amber

Amber was believed by the Vikings to be the tears of Freyja, their goddess of love and beauty. It symbolises cleansing, healing, protection, renewal; some have believed it to symbolise a resting place for departed souls due to the preserved insects in the resin. It has been used as a talisman for courage and confidence. Amber is one of the birthstones of Taurus as it's known to increase good luck, as well as helping Taurus personalities in their practical ventures.
So it’s sunshine challenge again and this time it seems to be gemstones, so let’s see how this goes (I had planned on changing my username before this started but never settled on the idea).
So amber. When I think of amber the first thing that comes to mind is Jurassic Park, which I’m sure is something that comes to mind for other people as well. The image of a mosquito trapped in amber is an iconic one and, when you think about it, it really is an amazing thing. As is amber in general, it’s so beautiful. It’s otherworldly in a way, being a thing from another time.
It also reminds me, fannish way, of Fringe which I watched awhile back, because it has a substance called amber which traps people and things within it. It’s an interesting (and scary) concept.
But the rest of this post is about the resting place thing mentioned in the prompt. Which’ll be under the cut (note beforehand, fuck cancer).
So yesterday had been a pretty good day in some ways. At the night I was watching Tina do a birthday baking stream (and Foolish was there in an apron that looked like a maid dress).
And then I saw a notification from an update account. It was that Technoblade had uploaded a video. Now I didn’t think too much of it at first, other than being glad he posted something as he hadn’t for awhile. But then the mood online instantly changed as people who had been watching it (and friends) started posting. Because it wasn’t a funny update or something, it was a upload from his family, because he’d died.
He’d been fighting cancer for awhile now (I’m not sure exactly how long) and he’d lost the fight. And I just went so… numb. And I haven’t even watched the video, I don’t think I can bring myself to.
I’ll admit, I’ve not seen much of his stuff. I think I saw… 3, maybe 4 streams and a few videos. But damn, he was funny. Seeing him break into the prison, and then later do the thing with Eret and Tubbo was both so epic and fun. (I’d found out after the stream that the prison break had been so sudden (and some notable people absent) because Techno had a surgery coming up at the time.)
Seeing people react to the news (which, since I had notifications for update accounts came in an unavoidable rush) was just so overwhelming.
And the reason was because, like most people, I’ve lost someone to cancer and I know that pain, that grief. And it bought it back in the back of my head. I feel numb and I’m gonna likely try and avoid being online too much for a day or two.
RIP Technoblade, you were funny and clearly had an impact on so many peoples lives. The legend never dies.
