shadowhive: (Calvin Sex face)
I’ve decided for today’s song Saturday to do two songs, both by different bands but both connected.

The first is The Smoking Hearts, Destory! It’s a bit screamy so if that’s not your thing... The video is part performance, but part the band in suits running from people (gangsters I assume) and then being caught and hooded/tied.

So I got into The Smoking Hearts cause of the bassist, the long haired guy in the video. His name is Calvin Rodney and I first heard of him because of Bullet For My Valentine. He was Jay’s bass tech and was on one of their DVDs that showed them on tour. At the time he was just a cutie with no name (especially when in glasses!). It’s only later I found out his name and that he was in a band, The Smoking Hearts.

If you’ve not heard of them it’s really no surprise, when I first saw them it was in a tiny space that’s probably not much bigger than the ground floor of my house. I talked to him afterwards at the merch booth though and he was really sweet. I saw him at a few other gigs as a tech and he was always sweet.

The second time I saw him with the band was when they supported Black Veil Brides (I think it was them) and it was right after I started my depression meds. I was a bit hyper and had trouble sleeping cause of them at first, so I made biscuits in the shape of the bands logo and snuck them in to them. I dunno how they tasted but they seemed to appreciate the gestured (I think there’s a pic on their insta somewhere).

They were working on a third album with Padge from Bullet but it never happened. I’m not exactly sure what happened but the band split. Which led to...

Calvin forming his own band, Funeral Shakes (and this is Over You). Its just a performance vid so it’s pretty simple. Unfortunately he lost his hair and he’s... much less pretty without it. Still, I think I prefer Funeral Shakes to The Smoking Hearts. They’ve only done one album so far and I’m not sure if there’s gonna be any more (I’ve not seen them live either)

The best song off the album is Soap which is just... so pervy.

I’d be remiss to do a Calvin post without including a pic of his epic chest tatt.

I’m not sure what I’m gonna do for next week’s post, we’ll see. (I’m trying to go through my less well known bands, so may do something like Finntroll or Nachtblut or something) Anyway lemme know your thoughts
shadowhive: (3rd Who's there?)
So last night I continued the Doctor Who watch with Mind Of Evil so thoughts ahoy.

The mind of evil is all about the Keller machine, which feeds on negative emotions (and then can kill by showing people their fears) and, of course, the Master is behind it. The Mind Of Evil has an issue that some of the old Who has, it’s long. At six parts long it definitely feels too long.

The first few eps also has a plot line at the world peace conference, which feels a bit superfluous. (Why would the Master bother using the machine to influence the people there when he already had another plan?) It dies feel a bit of a shame that Chin Lee isn’t in it more, Once that part fizzles out the story becomes more focussed, on a prison riot and the master stealing a missile which he intends to use at said conference. It’s impressive that they had an actual mussel there, I hope that the making of covers how that happened.

One part did involve the master exposing the doctor to the machine and then, as tv tropes puts it, it becomes like something out of a hurt comfort fic. He definitely cares about the Doctor and that much is clear here (despite his attempts to kill the Doctor in the previous ep). They even end up working together in an attempt to stop the machine when it starts going rogue.

There’s some good things here and some funny stuff too (like the Brigadier being in disguise as someone bringing provisions to the prison and the master having his own music). And some strange things too. (Making a castle into a prison seems like a good idea but you really mean to say that they didn’t close off a secret passage?)

All in all it was an ok ep but I’m sure it’s not gonna be my fav of the season.

After doing the song Saturday post last night I did some more Fenyx Rising and started Ares’ questline. Surprisingly the first vault I was sent to was Ares’ vault (also surprising it wasn’t combat filled) but of course it wasn’t that easy. Ares’ essence got stolen at the end by... someone, so now I have to track that down.

I watched a Bob’s burgers ep, then went to bed where I watched Buzzfeed Unsolved’s Mothman ep cause it popped up on twitter which was fun (I wanna go out there sometime!).
