shadowhive: (Prince Sidon Zora Prince!)
So yesterday I went to Birmingham comic con.

I was going to leave home at 10, after watching Star Wars Resistance, but there was some glitch on talktalk’s system so I couldn’t get Disney xd ugh. So instead I left at half 9 instead.

I ended up going in just my comfy Xbox hoodie and rogue one tee, though on the train I realised I could have used my Black Parade jacket. Oops. Ah well.

I took with me the first Star Wars graphic novel to read on the trip. I’d read some of the individual issues before and had found it in game ages ago just for 99p so I figured I should give it a read. I read most on the way there and the rest on the way back. There’s a lot of good moments there. Vader saying ‘I’ve killed many fathers, you’ll have to be more specific’, hints about Obi being a thorn in Jabba’s side, Fett doing stuff (though boo the poor pretty) and then the last scene of Vader finding out Luke’s name.

The second train, to the nec was packed. There was a guy next to me in awesome cosplay though at have no idea who it was. He had white hair, a lighting mark over his eye, a bandage on his left arm and wore some people, and, fuck, he had nice boots that I only noticed when I was off the train.

There were some awesome cosplayers there too, though sadly I never saw the cutie despite looking for him. Maybe he was going today instead? There were awesome stormtroopers milling around and I always smiled when I heard the beeps of R2 units, especially around their stand.

Once I was in I got the free coin made for the con and then had a wander round. It was packed, hot and pull of people which was overwhelming. Thankfully, though, it thinned out over the day. My first purchase was from the comic village, a comic called Giant Rhinos in space. I’ve never read any of it before, but the guys on one of the issue are in black parade outfits and, bonus, I got a pic with one of the oddishs from twitter who had the most adorable cosplay (though I’m sure I look awful).

I went to the live stage for the first panel but the time just seemed to drag for that first hour or so. I ended up going to both Star Wars panels with the first being Ingvild Delia on the live stage. She was in Rogue One, being the stand in for Leia. It was a fairly interesting talk, though it was sad that she said it probably wouldn’t have happened if the film had been made after Carrie’s passing.

I then had another wander around, looking to see if there was anything else to get. Basically I was looking for three things. Amory Wars (which I didn’t see), the Pikachu funko (which, again, I didn’t see) and any cheap Star Wars graphic novels/comics (which there was surprisingly few of). I was tempted to get a few things, a cute porg pin, the Killjoys graphic novel (despite not having read the comics despite having them all even now) and some of the cute Pokemon plushies but I decided not to.

It was around this time that they had set up two wall panels as tribute to Stan Lee, so people could leave messages. Even this early on they were both pretty full which was touching. I left a little note on one of them, but it was so sweet to see how many people had paid tribute to him.

I debated going on the Nintendo demos at this point too, but decided not to. Instead I went straight to the main stage from the imperial panel.

It was ok. There were some issues during the question part, where things had to be asked twice though. There were a few interesting things learned from it, like that the floors of Star Destroyers were actually hard wood painted black (so they got scuffed easily!) and that Veers had 16 takes to get ‘target the main power generators’ right (and they filmed that bit in a crane!)

After that I decided to have another wander to look for anything and that’s when I found something for mum. I was rooting through a book of graphic novels and found the Castle ones! I didn’t know they’d made three and I’ve gotten her the books before so figured they’d make a nice surprise Christmas thing. After that I went back to the a place in space stall to get one of the Star Wars graphic novels I’d seen there since it was 20% off. I got Mutiny On Mon Cala since it was one of the new ones and Mon Cala is one of my fav planets (partly because it’s water based, partly because it’s Clone Wars eps featured Kit topless). Those things drained my money though so it was free things for the rest of the day.

I went back to the Nintendo area and spent the rest of my time pretty much there. I went on the Smash demo which was one of the main things I was wanting to do. You were given two 4 person battles each time and I went on it twice (since the queue was better managed than egx). First round I played as Incineroar and then Inkling, second round I played as Isabelle and Richter. I figured it was best to give the new people a go. Incineroar is definitely my fav out of the four. He feels strong and I love his up b. I loved Isabelle’s fishing rod attack too. The others I’ll need to play in the game more to goon properly. After the first round I gave the new Mario remake a go which was pretty fun, it was a four person game (which a kid in front of me said I could join them which was sweet). I got to play three levels as Nabbit, Toadette and then toad (though the others had to go before we finished the third level). It looks great and is pretty fun though I wonder why they decided to remake the wii u game. I hope more is added to it before it comes out. Both of those were also played with wired controllers which I wasn’t used to either.

I had a go on Diablo as well, and I had no clue what I was doing. It was ok, not something I’d pick up myself though.

Between games I watched some of the Splatoon tournament though I’ll admit I wasn’t paying super attention. Oops. Good luck to the ducklings though.

Last thing I did was go on the Fallout 76 bus at the game stand which turned out to be a demo of the game. It didn’t tell you what to do, you just sat down and played so I had to figure it out on my own. Despite having headsets I couldn’t actually hear that much, especially when it came to playing audio files so I had no idea what I was doing (this was a problem with the TVs audio as the game audio was at max in the settings). I got to explore a bit and try some crafting and combat. I saw no bugs on my playtime, but it was short and so I couldn’t get a real feel of it. It does look pretty good though. It’s something I might pick up when it’s cheap and all the issues are sorted.

The wi-fi at comic con was still as bad as egx, I couldn’t upload pics until I got on the train and it would randomly get slow or refuse to load which was sucky and ugh.

On the train home I finished Star Wars and wrote a few more paragraphs of fic.

So yeah it was a good today kinda, I’m glad my ticket was free though.

Non-comic con thoughts: I beat the Minotaur on assassins creed odyssey yay! I also got the Murkmire dlc from the daily rewards on eso yay! We’ve not yet seen Fantastic Beasts 2 yet because the weather has been so bad. I’m thinking the way things are that we might not see it (Aquaman is out soon too and I’m more inclined to see that, especially since the reviews for Beasts 2 seem to be generally iffy).

Plan for the day is to relax, watch random stuff and (hopefully) get this fic done. I hope Resistance will be up to watch too.
