2018 fic round up part 1

shadowhiveSo I saw that kat_lair posted their fic round up this morning and I considered nabbing it. At first I was gonna leave the first half of last year out altogether and just focus on the second half (after the ![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
bandom_holidays reveal). But as I was walking Naryu I realised it might be better for me to post the first half as well and keep them separate.
So here it is. This is the first half of the round up, from Jan-May and it’s gonna probably include a lot more feels than I otherwise would include in a public post, but ah well. Everything is behind the cut, with the fic links copied from my master list. (Doing this has a good side, it made me realise I’d missed two fic from the masterlist)

Mostly it was continuing to flesh out the Kinkverse some more. It’s a world I really loved creating and playing in and every fic this ep year felt it was introducing a new angle on it.
Most popular story:
Probably one of the ones I posted on ao3, probably Clutch.
My best story this year:
There’s a lot of these fics that I enjoyed writing at the time and that I was proud of. I think As A Catwalk and Clutch were ones I loved especially.
Hardest story to write:
Mannequin. Just before I started writing it one of my friends cut me out of my life. It took a lot for me to get in the headspace to write it again. However when I was about 3/4 through it, my Kinkverse writing partner decided to do the exact same thing despite promising not too. It took a lot, but eventually I finished it up, but it was the end of the world that we had built together over the last few years. She never read it, despite it being something she’d suggested I do and I don’t think anyone else has read it either. It sucks because, when I was working on it, I was pleased with it.
Easiest story to write:
Honestly? I’m not sure. There’s so much space between then and now and so much hurt that I dunno.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Honestly? All of them. That is, however my fault. When the year started I mostly had one dedicated reader (and one that sometimes did) so most stuff ended up being to her, with the Kinkverse or in niche fandoms no one else but her would read. Because the Kinkverse was such a big thing (and so outs) I didn’t think it would be appreciated by anyone but us, or understood. I didn’t post much on ao3 but at the end of 2017 I started posting there, however that stopped when I was cut out by my first friend and my confidence was knocked. I never thought I’d post back there again, especially after I got hate comments (on the day my dog died too) so I locked everything up and vowed not to use it. I have started posting stuff there again now, but it took a lot.
Most fun story to write:
We Are The Used. It ended up going in a completely different direction then I expected and I just loved writing them all. I wish I’d been able to carry on their story. I was going to do a fourth part that would have focussed more on Dan but never did it. Dream Machine was fun too, linking it in to the wider world.
Fluffiest story:
I don’t think any are super fluffy. I think Puzzle might be closest, or Clutch,
Most angsty story:
The start of The Motionless was pretty angsty. I channeled so much of myself into Ricky’s character, about how directionless and lost he felt. Of The Forest starts in much the same vein
Sexiest story:
As A Catwalk is definitely up there. I loved writing sex worker Chris with Ray, it was such a hot image in my head. I had hoped to do a sequel with Chris and someone else but I couldn’t decide on who.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Clutch might me for oviposition and eggs. of The Forest might be for the plant based body horror
Biggest Disappointment:
Losing my fic partner, which meant the end of the Kinkverse and, in turn the end of me writing.
Getting anon hate comments on ao3 the day my dog died, which made me delete For The Taking from there (which I had earlier had to rewrite after an accusation of plagiarism from someone who was probably my bitch friends friend)
Biggest Surprise:
How many comments I had on Clutch on ao3, that was a surprise and nice too.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
As mentioned above, The Motionless and Of The Forest, the latter because I was despairing and channeled it into my writing.
Story I haven't yet written, but intend/hope to:
I’d hoped to do a lot of Kinkverse follow ups at the time. I had a follow up to Dream Machine sketched out, as well as next part of We Are The Used. I did start up a fic with Adam Lambert/Tommy Joe in the Kinkverse after seeing Solo but I stopped once I realised there was no point without my writing partner there to read it.
I was intending to write a Chris/Jay fic, but never did sadly. And the sexworker Chris one. Being cut out by the friend that introduced me to Motionless, kinda killed my buzz about them. I’ve not even listened to them since then.
Ok that wasn’t quite as bad as I expected, surprisingly. Part 2 should be next week and it will be much less emo.
