At the bottom of the sea
Aug. 22nd, 2024 05:17 pmSo over a month ago I saw on insta there was a Titanic exhibition coming to Birmingham. The trouble was, I was wary sorting a booking for it because both me and mum were waiting for doctor’s appointments. After all the last thing you’d want is to have a doctors thing the day before or after, or worse, on the day.
This is the last week of the exhibit before it moves somewhere else and mum surprised me by deciding we should go yesterday. Which, of course, meant for a tiring day (but one I hoped would distract my anxiety brain a little).
The day started as it usually does, with the ticket machine at the station being down. I’ve lost track of how often it’s out of service (though this must’ve been recent cause it wasn’t shuttered up). This led to us not able to get a ticket till the station and the last there was rude about it. Like it’s not our fault the machine was down and no one was on the train to get one from.😒
Anyway it was quite the walk from the station to the exhibition hall. There’s a Van Gogh thing there too which looks pretty from the things, but it was just as much as for titanic which was a shame.
Anyway the exhibit was pretty good, it was amazing seeing stuff that they had actually bought up from the bottom of the sea. There was some china stuff that’s got such little damage (only a few chips) you’d never had guessed it was from a sunken ship. There was also a bit of a rusticle, a life form that they’ve found on the ship, though the container it was in was so brightly lit I couldn’t get a good pic.
It’s also amazing some of the thinking that they had. One of the reasons they didn’t have enough lifeboats was they thought if it did sink it would sink so slowly they could ferry people back and forth to rescue ships with the boats they had which just sounds ?? At least it led to reforms that meant there’d be enough lifeboats for everyone.
With a ticket you’d get a replica of a titanic ticket, with a name of an actual passenger on it. At the end was a list of names and you could check if the name you had survived or not. It’s an interesting thing to have done but also kinda grim at the same time. To my surprise though I found out my name before then. He was ina board of notable people (there was even a picture of him!) which revealed he’d survived… and gatecrashed a film about the sinking. (Mum’s alas, wasn’t so lucky but there was no info about her)
They also had some stuff from the titanic film, including one of Rose’s outfits and a one of the heart of the sea props which was pretty.
From the lil ship I got some replica documents, a bookmark and keyring with Jenny who was the ship’s cat (which was so cute). I’d also got a guide from the start.
I’ve posted a few pics on insta and will add more later.
After that we went into Birmingham itself and had a a wander around and food. I didn’t get Halloween stuff this time, but got a Thor figure, fox guy figure, black series Christmas Jawa, some graphic novels and a Star Wars cookbook. And I got Saw X, Five Nights and Freddy’s and the Mario film from hmv.
Of course when we got back I was tired, and my eyes were achy which was so annoying. I just flopped and watched some gamescom stuff before heading up to bed.

I might end up going to Birmingham again in a few weeks cause Palaye are doing an acoustic show and signing at the hmv, though I’m waiting to see how I feel after the surgery and if I feel it’s worth doing. If I do go I’d also see something at the cinema (probably alien Romulus). I am still thinking of going to the local cinema to see either that or dead poool and wolverine next week but, again, it depends on the surgery.
Today they announced a Blake’s 7 boxset in the same style as the doctor who collection box sets which looks cool. I’ve never seen it myself but it’s made me curious to get it. Has anyone seen it?
I think I had other things to say but my braincell is blank so I’m gonna end there and have noms.
