The weekend has, like most days lately, been pretty low energy.

I had hoped to finally get round to watching the Celestial Toymaker today, but I can’t find where the blu Ray’s gone. I thought it would be in the pile with the others (those being the films from the Arrow order and VHS) but alas it’s not. I had meant to have a better look this afternoon but I ended up having a nap instead (so I might look later).

Fortnite was updated with the new marvel season though, as always, it took forever to download on switch. It’s pretty good so far though I do miss the car upgrades (damn the competitive people being so against them). Surprisingly I got a win the first night, which usually takes me a good while to get so I have the fancy victory umbrella.

I have hoped to fic but, alas, my fic brain seems to be absent again which is so annoying and bleh.

Last night I did manage to watch something though, the first disc of the Ju-On boxset, the curse and the curse 2. Some thoughts ahoy.

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched any of the Ju-On films and watching the Ring boxset awhile back made me want to, leading me to find out the same company that made that did this boxset. As well as the two theatrical films (which were what I’d seen), it also had the curse films (made for video ones before the theatrical ones) and black ghost/white ghost. I’d not seen any of those so I was curious.

With both Curse films being on the same disc, and both being roughly 70 minutes, I thought I might be able to watch them both in one night. So that’s what I ended up doing last night.

I was going into these films pretty blind, not really knowing what to expect. I had a feeling they’d be similar to what I could remember of the ones I’d seen. In some ways they are and in some ways they’re not.

In the ways they are it’s set in the same location, with the two main ghosts of the place terrorising people. And they were, like the others, separate short stories with different characters in each.

The thing that surprised me was that the events of one of these stories was very close to the events that started the curse in the house. In fact one segment had to have been days (maybe even less) a sit involves the direct aftermath. (That being a husband murdering his wife and child so violently it leaves a stain on the house). That segment has the guy finding the body of Kayako (the wife) and it also includes the husband, revealing that not only did he kill someone else elsewhere but he was also one of the first victims of the curse he’d caused.

That was probably the best of the segments on the first curse film (along with one set at a school). Though that segment also surprised me with how much blood was at the end (in a scene that made me go ‘OH that’s fucked up!’ Which is a rare thing).

I’d say that the second film was the weaker of the two, mainly for something that I’ll get into soon. The second film mostly followed the people from the last segment of the first (which survived that only weren’t so lucky here). I did like how it followed on the story of them and showed what happened to them, even though it was a little wild at times.

However there’s no getting away from the main problem with the curse 2, which is it repeats two of the segments from the first film. It repeats the segment mentioned above, as well as the last segment from the first film. This means that it takes 30 minutes for there to be anything new in the curse 2. 30 minutes! Of a 76 minute film! That’s almost half the run time being stuff seen before which is such an odd choice. Like I’d understand if it was just redoing the last segment because it caries on the characters story but to redo the other as well felt odd.

But despite that I did like them and I’m looking forward to continuing the run of them. The disc included intros by the director and the actress that played Kayako (she’s so sweet and it’s so impressive she can just… move like that) which was interesting cause it revealed the two films were filmed at the same time over 9 days! Which sounds impressive to me.

It is a shame that the boxset doesn’t have the two short films that link to these films, which feels like an odd choice cause there’s no other special features on the disc so they’d fit in. (I did check and they don’t seem to be listed on the other discs either which is a shame) so I’ll have to look them up. (Especially since one features a character that just… vanishes from the films and I wanna know what happened to him!)

Now I’m gonna snuggle Midna, watch the team go homecoming thing and maybe go on multiversus later (and maybe see if my fic brain will work too).
