Revenge of the fifth
May. 5th, 2021 12:21 pmSo yesterday was Star Wars day (May the 4th be with you!) and in some ways it was good, in some ways it was disappointing. But I’ll get to that.
Over the last few days I finished Pokemon snap, or rather the main story line. There’s still plenty to unlock, alternate routes, levelling up and figuring out how to gain the other star level pics of Pokemon. Each Pokemon has 4 different star levels that you can photograph, which usually are to do with different things they do. For example a one star is a standard pose, and others might be to do with certain behaviour (moving, in a certain pose, using an attack) and it feels like some are tricky to get. Some, like Snom, are pretty static so how to get other poses? I dunno.
On Sunday I ended up watching the second arc of the last season of the clone wars, which is Ahsoka centric. It mostly serves as a nice breather to start with, but it soon gets pretty deep with nice links to other things (we see both sides of Kessel, then there’s an unexpectedly heartbreaking reference to the events of an earlier ep). I did end up liking the sisters and it’d be nice if they showed up again. It ends with a lead up to the final arc, with Bo Katan recruiting Ahsoka to help her.
I’ve now got a few more fic files open in my documents with vague ideas that I blame
skinwalker for so we’ll see if anything comes from it.
I’d been hoping that there’s be some new announcements or others for Star Wars day, but there wasn’t anything really. Disney did have some new stuff from Galaxy’s edge, but there wasn’t much and they were too pricey which is a shame. I’m sure the American site got more which is infuriating. I did get the child Lego and some stuff from there but not much.
I was hoping for reveals of the upcoming Lego sets, or something to do with the upcoming game but there was nothing. There were some figures from Hasbro and one of the black series one looked cool but…
In the afternoon I ended up finally watching the last arc of the clone wars, which was released last year and I held off watching (like I said cause I meant to do a full run). The last arc is different from the rest because each are labelled as ‘part x: title’ and most don’t have the newsreel style intros that every other ep starts with. It’s also notable that it occurs concurrently with the events of Episode III with a lot of references to them as the arc goes on. (The first one has Anakin and Obi-Wan leaving to join the battle of Coruscant, the second has Obi-Wan telling Ahsoka that Dooku is dead and the third as Order 66). Every reference gave me chills especially because you knew what would happen (but at the same time, due to Rebels, you also knew who would make it)
The arc is about the liberation of Mandalore from Maul, with Ahsoka coming to Anakin and Obi-Wan asking for Republic aid, which seems to go badly until Anakin gives her Rex and a Venator with a bunch of clones. The Clones all have helmets with decoration based on Ahsoka which for the first eps is such a sweet gesture and then becomes chilling. In fact that’s a lot of the whole arc itself. It finishes off the Mandalorian arc which had been ongoing through the series since the world got introduced, and there’s a few cameos from people from prior arcs (as well as from the Rebels arcs) which were nice touches. Of course the first two eps are mostly build ups for the confrontation between Ahsoka and Maul, with the latter trying to get her to join him much like Kylo tried with Rey. Of course it falls apart when he tells her his original hope was to lure Obi Wan and Anakin there, killing them both (because he knows what Anakin will become). You can’t help but wonder what would have happened if that had actually worked.
The second half of the arc starts off hopeful, with Mail captured and the mission successful, but then Order 66 happens and everything goes wrong. And this is where the most heartbreaking things of the series happens, because you see how the clones who you’ve got to know over the course of the series, who have personalities and identities only for them to get overridden by the order. In fact by the end it’s clear that, as long as the chip is in their heads, they’re mindless killing machines. It’s a sad note to end the series on and it only gets sad when the droids that Ahsoka recruits gets destroyed and then the final season with Ahsoka (and then Vader years later). It’s probably the best arc of the whole run, even though it’s so heartbreaking (and through most of it I’d cast the pad aside, fully focussed on it).
I waited till the night to watch Bad Bacth, but before that was DS9 which was also sad because it was the last ep of season six and Jadzia🥺. I loved her and it was so sad that she just…. Got killed like that.
Anyway onto bad Batch which is under the cut, because it only came out yesterday.
It was a surprise to see that the first ep opened with a Clone Wars style newsreel opening, but it was moreso because it included animated versions of shots from Episode III which I thought was pretty cool. It also set the scene that the first act was still during the clone wars, with the bad Batch coming in and destroying a bunch of battle droids and their tanks. It’s here that it becomes heartbreaking again because order 66 happens (though it doesn’t effect them) and who the padawan is…
From there it goes to Kamino, where it’s shown (again) just how mindless the other clones have become since order 66. It also has Tarkin, which is his usual asshole self in his discussions with the Kaminoans and disregard for the clones and Bad Batch. And it’s clear the Kaminoans are up to something. Why would Nala Se(?) help Bad Batch escape? Who is Omega? Has she got the force? Why would they do that?
All in all I enjoyed it and I’m curious to see how it’s going to go (though I’m sure it’ll make me wish that there’d been more of the Batch in the Clone Wars).
In the night I did a race on Star Wars racer and some on Battlefront 2 but I got pretty tired so didn’t do too much.
Today’s plan is to read some Light Of The Jedi this afternoon and then I dunno.
