Sunshine Challenge 2020 5: Blue
Jul. 17th, 2020 01:21 pmPrompt 5: Blue
Blue is a tranquil color that is associated with a variety of things including: balance, discovery, peace, calm, openness, patience, honor, grace, trust, depression, recovery, prophecy, respect, empathy, flexibility, and water.
Sun-bleached bones were most wonderful against the blue – that blue that will always be there as it is now after all man’s destruction is finished. – Georgia O’Keeffe
Blue is often introspective and deep in its calm stillness. When you have been blue, have you been patient with yourself? Have you taken the time to explore your inner self and discover ways to progress?

When I think of blue I think of, primarily, the sea and the sky. (Well when the latter is not perpetually grey like it can be here)
I’ve always loved the sea even though I am, unfortunately, hours away from it. Almost every summer as a kid we’d go on a road trip to the seaside, which would inevitably include me paddling in the sea, or searching for rock pools or going in the sea life centre (if there was one). These trips tapered off when my grandparents got older (my grandad was the driver) but later we would manage to go to the beach with trips organised by someone on the village. I’d often be the youngest person on such trips (unless there was a child) with most people being elderly. Unfortunately the lady that organised them passed a few years back and then such trips stopped happening.
I’ve always loved watching stuff about the sea and all the strange and pretty animals that live beneath the surface. The sea truly is a strange place. I love going to aquariums, though I don’t often get to go. Last time I did was in November with my live and it was so nice (even though the penguins weren’t there). I was meant to go again this year (we got extra tickets cause of the penguin exhibit being closed) but... the virus happened. I hope they’ll be good for longer than intended, but I might try and go around my birthday,
Two weeks ago there was an update to Animal Crossing, which added the ability to swim in the ocean and dive, catching some of the strange life from beneath the sea. This includes the vampire squid and the mantis shrimp, but there’s also mundane stuff life seaweed. The update also included Pascal the cute otter that gives you stuff and drops wisdom for a scallop.
On the same day I won a code for a game called Beyond Blue. It was done in collaboration with the makers of Blue Planet II and as such is very pretty. You get to dive with all kinds of fish and have to scan them. The main storyline (over the course of 8 dives) is to do with whales, but you also get to see sharks and dolphins as well as deep sea stuff too. I finished it just a few days back and I think it’s definitely worth playing. I just need to go back and scan stuff for the last achievements.
One of the things about lockdown is that I’ve ended up following a bunch of animal accounts, as well as aquariums and such. One of them is the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California and every week they do a stream on twitch... on animal crossing. They talk about the various animals that you can find in the game, and they have had various experts come on to talk about insects or fossils. Today’s steam (at 3pm PT, 11pm uk time) is gonna have some people come and talk about the art in the game which is gonna be interesting,
The current book I’m reading, the Night Bale book The Faceless Old Woman That Secretly Lives In Your Home, is also blue. This is appropriate as the first part is set on an estate by the sea and the third (that I’m currently reading) is set on the sea. It’s a pretty good book so far, I’m certainly enjoying it and I’m gonna read more later. (It also includes an ace character).
Other fandom blue things Include lightsabers in Star Wars (and R2’s panels). The medical/science division colours in Star Trek. Captain America. The blue rupees in Zelda (and most of the Zora and Nayru iconography). The blue of party poison’s jacket (my main jacket).
Like red/orange and green are the primarily colours of the fire and grass starters of Pokemon, blue is the primarily colour of the water type starter. Unlike those colours though, water Pokemon tend to be more varied especially after gen 1. (I have, looking at me right now, the mega blox gyrados)
And there’s also Sadness, from Inside Out, a character I immensely related to when I saw her.
Also Blue is a british boyband from when I was a teen that were quite important fandom wise. They were the first band I wrote for as well as including some of my first guy crushes. (One which turned out to be bi yess!) they’re still pretty good and even did Eurovision once.
Non fandom stuff that’s blue: the blue dorito packets (the best kind), the blue of blu ray cases and the blue of my switch joy con. I’m sure there’s something I’m missing too but I’ve rambled enough about blue,

Last week I had an email saying that my Making Of The Umbrella Academy book was due to come in August as opposed to this week. The Wednesday I had a mail saying it was coming Today. But yesterday I had one saying it was four stops away. So it came yesterday. Because of the timing (after 7) I’ve not had a good look at . There’s a few things that amuse me.
The characters aren’t in number order, which would be the logical choice. It goes Five, Diego, Klaus, Ben, Allison, Luther, Vanya. I love that my even boys are together. There’s a lot of details about the collectibles and posters (Including, it seems, boyband posters made especially for the show.) It doesn’t seem that there’s anything about Dave or Vietnam in general. (I’m also annoyed that Forbidden Planet have it on the site for what works out to be £10 less now, ugh)
SFX have an TUA cover so I’ve ordered that (since I dunno if I can get it from anywhere near here). I’m not sure when it’ll come though. Hopefully soon (but I need to get better at magazine reading).
Speaking of TUA I watched it Wednesday and mum actually sat and watched it too. It was the fifth ep, that introduces the Handler and has some nice Kliego moments (aka pretty much every moment they’re together). I should’ve done a post with more of my thoughts yesterday, but it was a pretty good ep and I love Ben’s iconic ‘weeeee!’
Yesterday’s Roswell New Mexico was nice in that it actually played out like a horror film and then ended in a potential poly relationship (unless Alex goes off with the cute new guy).
I also watched all of season 3 of the dragon prince at last. The last ep was titled the final battle and it was pretty epic, though it was clear in the last moments that it’s not over.
Also yesterday I went to the store to get dog biscuits and sawdust and it was... odd. There was no wait time to go in and next to no one had masks or anything. It just felt strange and I was super uncomfortable, but then I’ve felt like that every time I’ve gone in soo. (It probably didn’t help that my pod thing is still awol.)
I’m gonna snug now, have noms and then read I think, before the streams tonight (and I’m gonna try and watch Doctor Who on Drama tomorrow too.)
