Under the sky
Feb. 1st, 2026 11:51 pmSo I wasn’t gonna make another post tonight (my mood’s kinda off) but I watched The Night Manager and I have Thoughts and Feelings for the finale (which are obviously spoilery so will go under the cut).
So I’ll be honest, I didn’t watch the first season when it was on 10 years ago (damn that’s a long gap!) but I saw it had been hyped up and so was intrigued enough to give it a watch.
The story follows Jonathan Pine (played by Tom Hiddleston) who is working in british intelligence. When someone dies under mysterious circumstances (of course, after contacting him and saying he had info) he endeavours to find out who killed him which of course leads him into a conspiracy.
I think it having such a long gap between seasons worked in its favour, it meant I could understand what was going on and when there was stuff from season 1 it was done in a way you could follow it a long in general. So I didn’t feel like my lack of knowledge was a detriment to following it along.
And it was compelling storytelling and I could, sadly, see our government supplying arms to cause a regime change in a country and getting in bed with arms dealers.
But! That’s not the main thing this is about. During his investigation Pine discovers that a man named Teddy is involved and he decides go undercover and find out how.
This is Teddy. (Having a visual is important)

What happens is what you’d expect, Teddy is suspicious him, but grateful for the opportunity to have money (Pine poses as in investor) and there’s a back and forth between them that soon becomes homoerotic. There’s one point it feels like they’re gonna have a threesome (mum even noticed it despite not paying attention) but alas that never happens. There’s drugging there’s torture, there’s near death but there’s always this tension between them. Which Pine uses to get Teddy to switch sides and help him.
So then we arrive at the last ep, it feels like they’re gonna fuck up the bad guy’s plan. Steal back a weapon, kill the bad guy, stop revolution, save the day! Hurrah!
And yeah the tension becomes even more blatant. Again it felt like they were gonna kiss. Another character even comments it (and the bad guy too). And it looks like things are gonna go to plan.
Then bam! Everything goes completely wrong. The bad guy wins, cause he’s out manoeuvred them. And then the bad guy (who is Teddy’s dad),shoots him in the head right in front of Pine and it pisses me off so much cause ahhh they were so clearly in love and meant to end up this together. But no the bad guy had to win (and kill a bunch of other characters too and get holed up in a new fancy house in England despite being an arms dealing asshole).
And you might be thinking that’s it’s just my yaoi brain seeing these things but the creator of the show said in an interview that Pine was in love with Teddy and I just! I hate that! (And I also hate that they didn’t kiss, if Teddy was a woman you would bet your ass they would have but that’s another rant entirely!) I’m already seeing people mad about it too and I’m sure they’ll be fix it fics on ao3 (which I will be hunting down) but ahhh!
I mean this is a look of love right there.

I’m so pissed!
But it’s not like, being pissed at Doctor Who which ended badly because of bad writing and baffling decisions, I’m mad that it ended like this because it’s an intentional bad ending. (There’s meant to be a season 3 I’m sure Pine will go on a roaring ramage of revenge.) and just… ahhh I’m so annoyed they killed him off! He could’ve had redemption and love and freedom from the manipulations of his father but nooooo they had to kill him off. Fuck that
