Barely an instrument
Mar. 27th, 2023 11:39 pmLong gig post ahoy
The weather stayed nice on the way to the station. But it was when I was halfway there I realised I’d not put my bracelets on after the shower last night. I hope they’re safe.
When I arrived at the station I found the ticket ma gone was, inexplicably, sealed. A sticker on the side said it was open from 6am-2pm which…. Makes absolutely no sense. I wait for the train then spent the trip just posting random nonsense on twitter.
Why is it when I come to this gig and can’t get anything I see a bunch of awesome things. There was cute Bulbasaur like sushi cats in a new place next to hmv and the entertainer had a bunch of reduced fortnite figures and the Minecraft bee plush. I’m definitely looking to see if I can find the sushi cat somewhere when I get back.
Before leaving the bull ring I went on the net there and it was a good job I did because James’ merch was in the blue room and not with Lovejoy’s merch which was odd. But it meant I was armed with that knowledge.
Roadworks are still going on around the venue though it seems part is done and it’s expanded the pavement around it. Despite saying to queue from 7 when I got there around 6 the queue was there and fully formed. I just joined at the end and listened to Weathers and Adam (thankfully security said nothing about the bag so go figure).
Once inside I saw that they’d decided to be semi organised. Instead of the usual crush by the merch (which isn’t great in a venue this size) there were two queues with merch stands either side. So 8 joined one and got the hoodie, which looked nice. I was in two minds about getting the Capy tee or the long sleeve since first seeing them awhile back but decided not to get either.
I was worried the mysterious blue room would be in the standing area but it wasn’t. It was by the toilets which led to confusion when I first went that way cause I thought there was a line for merch but it was the toilet line. Inside it was quiet though and I got the James tee easily enough.
Then I went into the venue and found just how upper the upper balcony was. It’s right at the top of the venue where I’d never been before but it’s unreserved seating. I ended up getting a decent enough spot in the middle with a few of the full stage. Trouble is it really is right at the top, the ceiling is almost in touching distance when I stand.
I must have missed the first support while coming in and getting merch because the first band I saw was James and ahhh. He put on such a good show and was clearly smile and overwhelmed by everything. New fact I learned from him? Wilbur helped write a verse of calling so that’s interesting. The start of Slow Down was haunting and of course he played Car Lights with everyone singing along which was awesome.
He also played two brand new songs! It’s hard to judge new music in a live settings but I think the second one was my fav of the two (The Other Side? It was something like that). When he closed the set with him there was an unusual thing for a support act because you could hear the people were disappointed it was over. I think that’s definitely a good sign. Especially since from the enthusiasm and love he’d got you could’ve mistaken him for the main act. Hopefully when he next tours he’s headlining because he deserves the world.
(This is all written between the sets everything under was done on the train)
Oddly, which I realised later, he didn’t play Sleeping On Trains which I thought he would have cause it’s one of his big songs.
Between sets I worked on the start of a possible idea which, of course, isn’t any of the wips or any of the ideas or concepts I noted. So we’ll see if it gets anywhere.
Lovejoy was next and they were so great, they had a weird semi circle thing that had their name in pretty colours at the start and then it was used a few times to play graphics but not enough I feel and there was some bright lights flashing which was a bit annoying at times (but not too bad). The best use of the graphics was to have buses during model buses.
I meant to record a few songs for Chai but ended up… recording many more. Instead or 1 or 2 I got 8. Oops.
Things that I noted:
*Wilbur guitar slutted up with Joe, then did the same with Ash
*he also got on his knees at one point… just as the song ended so the lights went out as soon as he did (and I switched the camera by mistake)
*Wilbur said ‘someone’ in the band was napping half an hour (I’m not sure if it’s half an hour before the set or before he said it) then pointed to Joe.
*During the band intro he called Ash dad guitar and enigmatic, then called Joe mum guitar, he said Marks drums was ‘barely an instrument
*He came back from the encore and said ‘you can’t keep us away from you Birmingham’
*he said recording one day in his basement with someone (mark I think?) was a core memory
These last two are out of order:
Call me was the best song of the set, though that could be cause it’s my fav
*they played one new unreleased song (consequences?)
Outside the gig there were posters so I got one even though it’s black and white (but I had change to get rid off). That’s a good sign though they don’t usually have people selling posters outside that venue (they didn’t for set it off alas)
I got to the station in time for the train but als not enough for time to get a drink, which I really could have used cause I was parched.
But also ahh! I’ve missed gigs. I wanna go to a gig again. Wilbur said it was his first time playing in Birmingham but he’d definitely be back, I hope so.
Anyway I’m home now I’m a bit wired but also hungry and thirsty so I’m gonna nom and drink.
