The Master might be completely unnecessary for the story but I still enjoyed watching him swear at the Doctor's TARDIS immensely ("You may as well try to fly a second-hand gas stove!" :-) And he and the Brig had some great interaction.
The axons were pretty cool, both the pretty and the not-so pretty versions. It was a little funny how ineffective the root tentacles became when they were fighting Benton and Yates compared to when they were killing off soldiers left and right at the comples.
I don't know if this was the first organic spaceship in a visual media but it might well have been. I seem to remember that both the Vorlon and the Shadows in Babylon 5 had organic ships but that is of course much later.
That's so true about Chinn! And I agree it's a shame we didn't get to see more of Filer.
