Challenge #2
Tunnel of Love
Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.
Creative: Write a love poem to anyone or anything you like
Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
So when I had the notification for this earlier (cause I did set up notifications for the account cause otherwise my braincell would miss them) I wasn’t sure what I was gonna do. I thought I was gonna do something random related, cause I do love a bunch of stuff but I wasn’t sure which one I’d go for.
Of course I could do multiple things, but then I’d be sure my brain would ramble like crazy. (And I’d not be able to trust my brain if Who came up cause I still have strong Thoughts And Feelings.) But instead I’ve decided to talk about my babygirl. Maybe I’ll do a fannish version of this later (and I’ll add a link to it) but for now… I hope you like cat pics.
So this is Midna.

If you saw the first sunshine post you’ll have seen her there and she is much more herself since then. The weather has cooled down and she’s even come for snuggles again!
I’ve had Midna for years now (fuck knows how long, the oldest pic of her on Facebook is 2014 so at least then). Her name comes from The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess *gestures at icon*.
I remember the first day I got her. It was the one good thing my uncle did, taking me to get her, though we got lost cause it was some out of the way place. She was so smol and so sweet. I remember that first day, she hid under the grill of the oven and used mums Guinea pig cage as a bathroom.
She is a bit skittish around people. If anyone other than us is around she will hide herself somewhere. Which, honestly, is such a mood. One time we had people fixing the boiler and we couldn’t find her anywhere until we came back from walking the pup.
She’s mostly an indoor cat. She sometimes wanders in the garden outside but she doesn’t go further than the greenhouse. This stems from her first time out in the garden and she got over the wall next door and got herself stuck between the wall and the neighbours garage. I dunno how she did it cause the wall it like 10 feet tall and she wasn’t a jumper at the time but… it really put her off adventuring.
In recent years she has gotten a bit more affectionate. She would come and curl up on us sometimes but only when the weather was getting cold. Now however she does it a lot more often (unless, like recently, it’s been a heatwave).
I call her a round girl cause she curls up in a round circle most of the time but occasionally (like the first pic) she will stretch herself out, showing off her tummy stipe.

I love her so many and her lil toe beans.

She’s not my only girl, there’s also Leia (my other kitty) and Naryu (my pupper) but she is the oldest. I got her after my first cat Solo died of old age and I felt lost without him. Even though he was a bit skittish and not affection really. And then we got Leia from a lady that worked across the road who’d heard the trouble we had to get Midna (and she bought her the next day, the fuzzy lil memace) and then Naryu came later still, when our current dog sadly passed.
However both Naryu and Leia are harder to get pics of.
Leia is very fast and has a tendency to run away when seen (she’s usually only around when I’m in bed about to sleep and then she comes to purr extremely loudly on me) and Naryu, being black is hard to spot in pics. (And again, tends to zoom off when she does something cute) however both of them are very sweet with Leia often rubbing against Naryu

As you can see Leia is VERY furry and so is very soft

Naryu is very sneaky (and jumps in mums seat whenever she gets up, unless she follows her)
Anyway those are my baby girls and I love them!
(Again no creative vibes but maybe next time)
There ends the Sunshine revival portion of the post.
I don’t have much else to see in general (other than weather has thankfully cooled a lot, yipee!) however last night I did watch something I’d been meaning to for a looooong time so here’s some thoughts on it. (It being the film Uzumaki.
So a long time ago I saw the trailer for Uzumaki. It was on an Asian horror dvd, one of the trailers when you put the disc in. (i dunno if it was Audition, one of the Ringu films or Ju-on or what).what’s important is that the trailer left an impression, that I wanted to see this film. I next found it on dvd or on any streaming thing…until last year and Shudder uk got it (at least I think it was last year).
(Shudder being a horror film platform, though the uk listings are drastically less than the us one)
So it had been on my to watch list since then, especially since I was on a J-Horror kick last year. (I got the Ringu boxset, plus the Ju-On one and the excellent J-Horror rising boxset, all from arrow video). However for whatever reason I didn’t get round to Uzumaki.
So last night on a whim I decided to finally check it out. So what did I think? It was pretty good. It did have a bit of a weird vibe toBally, especially towards the start, but once it found its pace it was good. A lot of the visuals that I remembered from the trailer didn’t actually happen until the last act, which was a bit of a shame, but also I guess it’s only right that the most compelling images are when things are fully off the rails. And year the last 20 minutes do have a lot of images that are just… bonkers.
One thing that struck me is that it did play out a bit like some other j-horror (like Ringu and Noroi) where there was an investigator involved looking into things and he did find out something to do with what was going on only to die before he could share anything with the main character. Also there’s a guy that’s turning into a snail (for some reason) but they don’t do as much with it as they could have done. (It’s mostly implication, a growth under his shirt that keeps growing) and then a shot of giant snails crawling up a building which is a good image but it feels it should have had more of a focus).
I did wonder if it was a choice to keep things so vague and unanswered (or if it was down to the limited length of a film) but then I looked it up and read that it was made before the manga it was based on was finished so maybe the answers weren’t there because the answers literally weren’t there.
Maybe I’ll watch the anime version that was done, but I’ve heard that the quality takes a massive dip so I’m not sure if I should.
Anyway! Now I’m gonna finish watching the DJO glastonbury set (I’ve only heard his one song on Fortnite festival before this), watch Marple on BBC4 and then… who knows?

Uzumaki is a trip. I do recommend reading the manga if you can. It's MASSIVE--my omnibus edition is over 400 pages long--so I would guess they just weren't able to get everything into the movie. I haven't actually watched it since I read the manga. Maybe I should. But it's much more of an anthology vibe, like, "There's this town and weird shit starts happening with spirals," and each story is a different example of said weird shit. It's not really connected to a guy investigating stuff. Also, no live action adaptation can really hold up to Junji Ito's illustrations. His imagination is terrifying.

Ohh I’ll have to look it up, but damn 400 pages is a lot! I’m not surprised that it’s more anthology based and that does make me curious about what else happens. The movie is more focussed on Kirie (and I guess it makes sense for the film to be more streamlined and focussed in that sense, cause other weird stuff is happening but it doesn’t get as much focus). The investigator is only in it five minutes so he’s not a focus but he did find out something that we never know. Yeah it really seems to be! I think this is the first thing of his I’ve seen (though I have seen that Amiga fault thing of his)

Heh. Yeah, my last dog was often curled up in a little cinnamon bun, either on the floor or on whatever pile of clothes I was in the process of taking to the laundry.
IMO, "The Enigma of Amigara Fault" is a classic, but it's not my favorite thing he's done. For me, it's either "Uzumaki" or "Tomei," which is disturbing for different reasons. The body horror is a way to communicate psychological and/or socialogical issues, and that's way more powerful. And then there's that one where he was like, "What if sharks had legs?"
no subject
That’s fair! I think I will look into getting Uzumaki at some point. And I’ve heard of Tomei! The company I got J-Horror rising from released a blu ray of a film version earlier in the year but I dunno much about it (something about her makes people kill right? Or something like that?) he’s done something with sharks with legs??
no subject
Yeah, she's like a succubus, but not. It's weird, because depending on how you interpret it, she's either an evil monster who causes destruction and violence on purpose; OR people treat her like an object because of how beautiful she is, and she BECOMES a monster. I prefer that second interpretation, but either way, it's a gnarly series.
The shark one is called "Gyo!" It's a hoot! (To me.)

I FULLY recommend the manga of uzumaki. it’s not super long and it’s one of my fav junji ito. it’s interesting that the movie follows an investigator, as the manga is mostly from kirie’s perspective. I’ve never seen the anime so I can’t give my perspective on that tho.
no subject
Yeah I think I might have to look for it! Oh the movie is Kirie focussed. The investigator is only in it for about 5 minutes, he comes in after her friend’s dad dies and he finds something out but doesn’t get to tell her what. I thought the anime was on Netflix but it doesn’t seem to be there now (there is a separate Junji Ito thing though👀)
