At the bottom of the sea

Another post today it seems.

A few things happened today after the last post. I had an Elder Scrolls crate come, which I’m still surprised they’re sending. It was better than the last one (the last seemed lacking cause it had socks as a wearable). This one had a pretty tray, a nice big soft blanket, a key ring (would be useless as one but nice for display), a sweet roll pin and a lil plush dragon.

I should have have something else coming soon but it seems not. I’d preordered the splatfest Pokémon tees only to get an email today saying the order is cancelled. But when I checked the account it still says awaiting dispatch so I dunno what’s going on.

This afternoon I had to head to Home Bargains to pick up dry food for the cats (there was only half a bag left mum informed me as we walked Naryu). One reason why I was eager to go was because when we went before Christmas there was Sonic figures, including one of Shadow. Alas there wasn’t Shadow today which is a shame (it was around when the money issues were going on so I didn’t wanna get him). I did get sonic though and it’s… ok. It’s not as poseable as it makes out (though I’d still like Shadow if anyone sees one). I also had two league of legends figures and I’m not sure why other than they looked cool and were insanely reduced (about 90% off) and I’m a sucker for a bargain.

I did get tired after walking back. I meant to do a post when I got back but just felt too drained. I tried to doze but… had no real luck.

So I thought about making a post on The Rig and someone asked for my thoughts so I’m gonna post them here. Thoughts are divided in two: non-spoiler thoughts above the cut and more spoilers thoughts under it.

So I heard of The Rig when I saw Radio times tweet about it a few weeks ago, with the post being about a trailer for it. I watched the trailer and was instantly curious. Some sort of mysterious goings on at sea on a rig? I was immediately curious. Especially since nightmare yearnings had a story set on rig. And I think there needs to be more sea based spookyness.

So what’s the premise? The show is set out on an oil rig in the North Sea. Things seem normal enough, until they lose communication with the main land. Then there’s a tremor. And then a mysterious fog rolls in…

As I mentioned in a post at the time, it was released last week and I intended to watch one ep on Friday, but I ended up watching the next straight after it (and would have watched more if I wasn’t feeling tired). Over the next two days I did the same, watching two eps a night, so I watched the whole thing over a weekend which, considering I rarely binge, I feel says a lot.

I’d say after watching it that it’s less a horror (though it has some elements) but more a drama/mystery type deal.

If you’re interested it’s on Amazon prime.

so the cut is here and spoilers are ahoy!

So everything I mention above in the premise? That happens in the very first episode.

At first it seems that the three things are linked, that whatever is disturbed causes the lose of communication and I thought that at the time too but now? I’m less sure, mostly because of later revelations.

So what was disturbed? Underneath the North Sea (at least it’s speculated could be much bigger) is… something. It’s some soft of life that’s intelligent and immensely old. It takes the form of spores that are in the fog and they can affect people that breathe them in or have cuts on their skin. Once inside they essentially possess the person, giving them special abilities (including fast regeneration) but it comes at a downside, the process makes the person expel impurities (tattoo ink, fillings) and sometimes that process is fatal. Actually possession might not be the right word, as most of the people are still them for lack of a better term.

For portion of the show it seems that whatever the organism is a bad thing. After all it’s controlling people and making them act strangely (and one is shown dying from the attempt of ‘possession’). But by the end it’s less clear. When they send a camera deep down and find communication in the form of rings (rings that one person possessed has drawn) and work out they measure time between extinctions I don’t think the thing is evil.

My theory that I had around ep 4 and I’m pretty sure of, is that the thing is, for lack of a better term, natures repair system, repairing the damage after mass extinctions. This is shown in what happens in the part of the rig the spore possessed people end up controlling, life appears there. In the oil, from the walls, there’s plants growing. Nature.

Another sign this thing isn’t malicious is what happens. Yeah at the start there’s tremors, but not because of this rig ‘drilling too deep’ or causing damage to it. No, it turns out that a companion rig tried to do something to harm it., with parts bought in to the rig of the show to try it there later. This leads me to my theory that the communications blackout isn’t caused by the entity but is instead caused by the company, to make sure if anything went wrong in the extermination (which, of course it did) that word couldn’t get out.

But I say a lot here but I’ve not talked about the people on the rig itself. The guy in charge is played by the same guy that’s dr Isaacs in the Resident Evil which I instantly thought of but he does well here in a very different roll as the guy trying to keep things under control in a mysterious situation beyond his control. The other person in charge, Rose, is from the company but has no knowledge of what’s going on either. She’s actually able to use some of her skills to find out what’s going on.

There’s also one crew member that’s just a fucking ass (who was in Torchwood’s countrycide ep). Before the show began the crew were waiting on a helicopter to take some of them home at the end of their shift. When the comms went down and fog went in that didn’t happen and he was just… an ass the whole time about it. You’d think the way he acted that there was a helicopter on the pad ready to go abs people were telling him he couldn’t use it instead of what was happening.

In fact most of the cast were great, it’s just my brain has not stored the names of them. Indeed all I remember is Rose and bAs (the first guy infected). The show also gains points for having the medic being a wow (married to a woman on the mainland) and one of the more minor characters being mlm. That was nice, especially since there’s no judgement.

The end of the show raises more questions, which should be answered in season 2 if there is one (though it does work as a standalone). What does the fog mean on the mainland? Has this happened before on other rigs and the company has covered it up? What will the organism do now? Will it go back to being dormant if lash out more? Where are they being taken on the helicopter if not the mainland?

I’m sure there’s more thoughts I had but I can’t think of them right now. Oop. But in short, I really enjoyed it and while it went more eco-horror than I expected (I thought they’d awaken a more conventional type beastie) I still very much enjoyed it. I hope it does well and it gets seen by a lot of people. And lemme know what you think once you’ve watched.

It was definitely the cast that drew me in to watch - Martin Conpston is (a)local and (b)has been all over the local media recently and I love him as an actor anyway, and the rest of the cast were SO bloody good. It was also filmed really near where my cousin lives (and where I go when I'm through in Edinburgh), so that was another reason, but YES - it was excellent and really so much more than the supernatural horror/thriller it was sold as, it was realy an interesting concept - is it evil if all it's trying to do is save the planet for the future? Just because the earth is "poking back" as that guy put it. The guy that died was on methanol at the time, right? The effects on his tattoos were SO well done. I'd love to see a follow on series, or a novelisation that goes into what else happens, afterwards.

You're really selling me on The Rig. I haven't read your in-depth spoilers but the ones above the cut continue to make me want to watch.

Your new crate sounds so much better than the last one.
