All The Boys In Los Angeles Look Like You From A Distance

All The Boys In Los Angeles Look Like You From A Distance
Pairing: Awsten Knight/Maxx Danziger
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Angst, some sexy times in the flashbacks.
Notes: So this was inspired by the fact that Maxx and Awsten were on the same Warped tour together and my mind thought of… this. This has a lot of flashbacks/memories (in italics) and so of them are a bit disconnected and jumping around. This was gonna end more vaguely, but…

The activities of the first few days back from touring could be divided into two basic categories, the first was decompressing. Enjoying being back home, sleeping in your own bed and being truly alone for the first time in weeks if not months. The second part was stocking up, since the cupboards were often pretty bare. The second part also included dealing with other things that had happened while you were gone. Looking through mail, dealing with missed calls, catching up on anything that you’d missed.

Of those two categories Awsten was firmly in the former.

It wasn’t that he was tired, well not completely, it was that his heart ached. He sighed softly, closing his eyes as he laid in bed. Warped tour had been great. There was nothing quite like it. It was part tour, part festival and you got to hang out with all kinds of people, some who he’d never have crossed paths with otherwise. Warped was a place were you made relationships that could be brief or long lasting.

Early this Warped Tour they’d hung out with Set It Off. He’d heard them before and he thought they were pretty good and they were all nice guys, funny and sweet and full of interesting stories. So they’d ended up hanging out regularly over the tour, to the point where virtually every day their two bands were together at least once.

It was during this time that he started hitting it off with Maxx Danziger, the band’s drummer. He was sweet, cute and funny. And, well…

Awsten let out a soft groan as Maxx kissed him, his hands running down his sides. His tongue slipping past his lips, lapping at his own. He tasted sweet, of the soda that he’d been drinking just a few moments ago, before Maxx suggested they head back to his bus.

When they parted for air, they were gasping and Maxx smiled, his gaze meeting Awsten’s. “I hope I didn’t misread things.”

Awsten responded by crashing their lips back together.

Awsten sighed at the memory, trying to shake it from his head. It was hard not to dwell on what had happened over the course of the tour, of the relationship that had blossomed between them. He was no stranger to hooking up with people on tour and he knew that sometimes Warped resulted in people having the equivalent of summer flings, but he’d never experienced one himself.

Until now.

Awsten sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Stupid feelings.” He muttered to himself, then swing his legs over the side of the bed, deciding that going outside and getting supplies might clear his head.

***

It doesn’t work, not exactly. He’d been able to get some things, enough to last him awhile. Rat wasn’t the problem, the problem was it felt like every guy he saw looked like Maxx, at least from a distance. It got to the point where he almost called his name a few times, until they turned their head and it was clear it wasn’t him. It was so fucking stupid. Not every brown haired or bleached blonde guy could be Maxx, he knew that in the logical part of his brain, but that wasn’t the part of his brain he was listening to when he caught sight of one of them.

It didn’t help that he knew that Maxx was out there somewhere, that he lived in LA too so that there was a real possibility that one of these lookalikes actually were him. He could run into him on the street or in the store or in Starbucks…. shit.

He tried not to think of that, heading into his kitchen, starting to put stuff away, trying not to think about that possibility too much.

”No way, you live in LA too?” Maxx grinned at him, running his fingers through Awsten’s hair. He was sure that he’d already told him about that, during one of their earlier conversations. He must have right? Right now he didn’t care, not really. He was still in the afterglow, still breathless.

“Mmm.” Awsten murmured, trailing his fingertips along Maxx’s bare chest. “We’ll have to hang out sometime.”

Maxx made a noncommittal sound and then he bent down, bringing their lips together and all other thoughts left Awsten’s head.

***

Awsten sat in front of his tv, where he’d decided to make something that could be described as a nest. He was bundled up in a soft, comfy blanket and he had a big bottle of soda and bag of chips, which was now half empty. He’d been watching tv, only he wasn’t really, it was just on in the background, providing light and sound but he was paying attention to neither.

His thoughts were, of course, still stuck on tour.

Maxx’s lips pressed against his neck, whispering sweet nothing’s as he pushed him against the side of the bus, making out with him with such a fierce passion it surprised him.

Watching Maxx from the side of the stage, smiling as he sees him turn from behind the drum kit, sticking his tongue out at him as he beats the drums. Awsten can’t help but think of those arms the whole time he watches him play.

The bunks on buses weren’t meant for cuddling, they could only just about fit together in the small space, but it was nice, comforting. Awsten thought Maxx looked so adorable when he slept, his head pressed against his shoulder, or his chest or a pillow. He was glad whenever they got to spend such time together, regardless on whichever band’s bus they were on.

Warped wasn’t the best place for privacy and, since the bunks weren’t the best places for cuddling they were even more awkward for more intimate activities. Still there were some places that they found, where they could do more than kiss. The only downside was that you often had to be quick, although often that wasn’t as much of an issue as you’d expect.

Awsten bit his lip, his hand shifting under his blanket towards his crotch. He might be heartbroken, but the memories got to him. Maybe, just maybe, this would help. He swallowed and shifted his hand under the waistband of his sweatpants.

Maxx growled above him, his fingers tugging on Awsten’s hair as he sucked him. They were under one of the stages between sets and there was the sound of movement above as gear got changed around. Awsten couldn’t think who it was meant to be, nor did he care. All that mattered was how he felt down here and how Maxx’s cock felt as he took him.

Awsten moaned. His eyes lidding as Maxx’s hands spread his cheeks, his breath ghosting over his skin. It made him shiver and he didn’t care that they could be caught like this. His pants were pulled down, bunched around his thighs and Maxx… His tongue darted out, around the pucker of his hole before diving inside and all other thoughts left Awsten’s head.

On the Set It Off bus after their set, laying in the small space of Maxx’s bunk, panting softly. They were both naked, swear glistening on their skin as they catches their breath. Awsten’s head was resting on Maxx’s chest, his fingers carding through his hair, whispering soft words that Awsten couldn’t quite register.

That last thought was what made stop the movements of his hand. He was trying to think of sexy thoughts, not thoughts like that, after. He tried to chase the thought away, but his mind kept circling back around to it and all he could here was the soft mumbling of whatever Maxx was saying to him.

“Fuck…” Awsten sighed, letting go of himself deciding to get up, to get out and do something, anything else.

***

Horror films turned out to be a welcome distraction. He could get lost in the story, however slim they could be sometimes, and get spooked whenever there was a jump scare. There was no association with him to take him away from it, because they’d not watched any horror movies together.

In fact they’d not watched any movies together. They’d not done anything that could be construed as a ‘normal’ date, but then there wasn’t exactly a restaurant or cinema on warped and they hadn’t stayed in one place long enough to go to the local town. All they’d had was snatched moments alone and there’d never been any expectation that it had been anything more than that. But then again, they’d never actually talked about it, never had the conversation. Should they have? Would it have made things any better?

Awsten wasn’t sure. He sighed softly, finishing off the last of his Pacific Cooler as he got up, looking for another film to watch.

***

More than once Awsten had considered calling Geoff or Otto so he could go round to pester them. And then he remembered that they’d both decided to head back to see their parents. Maybe he should have done the same? At least then he could have spent time with them if he got bored at home.

He sighed, looking up at the ceiling, thinking of what he could do instead. Maybe he could go see Jawn? Or Travis? Nah, he wasn’t in the mood for seeing either of them. He wasn’t in the mood for being with anyone, not really.

The advantage of living in LA was that there was a lot to do, but that was also a disadvantage, because just looking through to everything the city had on offer could be overwhelming. How was he supposed to decide what to do when there were so many options?

He’d tried looking through the cinema listings, but there was nothing playing that was even remotely interesting to see. He wasn’t in the mood to deal with anything that had groups of people, so that put out stuff like comedy clubs. Maybe he could do to the zoo, or an aquarium but a quick check told him it was the school holidays and… no, he didn’t want to deal with children running around, being loud.

Eventually he sighed, grabbed his keys and wallet and just headed out the door.

***

He spent the next hour just walking, wandering aimlessly around the streets, hoping that it would clear his head. It helped, for a time, but after he got himself some doughnuts he saw someone that looked, from a distance, like Maxx and then his mind went back to him.

It wasn’t him of course, that was obvious when he was closer. He hated how he saw him everywhere, how his mind wasn’t seemingly able to move on from it. He knew such things were normal when relationships ended but that didn’t lessen aphis much it hurt.

He sighed as he headed home, box of doughnuts in a bag hanging from one hand. Time to head back home.

“How are you doing?” Geoff’s voice was loud and clear in his ear, as if they were in the same room and not miles away.

“I’m ok.” Awsten lied, not wanting to worry his friend and band mate. This wasn’t the time for a long conversation about his feelings. Maybe if they were together, but not over the phone. “How’re you guys doing? I bet you’re bored without me.”

“Things are good here, we just wanted to make sure you’re ok.” ‘Because of what happened with Maxx’ went unsaid, but it was clear what he meant. Awsten wasn’t exactly sure how to answer him and he was pretty sure that no answer he could give would be good enough. “You know you could always come join us, you don’t have to spend your time alone out there.”

“I’m fine Geoff.” He lied, again, rolling his eyes. It was sweet though, how much he cared. “I appreciate the thought, I just need time, time to decompress.” He hoped he’d buy it, he did often need some space anyway when tours finished. Just because this one had additional emotional baggage didn’t change that. “You guys have a nice time out there without me. Say hi to Otto from me.”

“I will. We’ll come check in as soon as we’re back alright?”

Awsten rolled his eyes, but inside he’s touched by the concern. “Alright. So what’ve you guys been up to?”

***

Talking to Geoff had been nice, even though it hadn’t been long since they’d been under each other’s feet on tour. Maybe he would take him up on his offer and head out there to join them. His phone started to ring again and he picked it up, not even looking who it was. “Geoff I’m o…”

“Hey.” The voice on the other end interrupted him, rendering him speechless, because it wasn’t Geoff’s voice. It was Maxx’s. “Could I see you?”

“Ok.”

***

They met up a few hours later at a coffee shop not far away. Awsten hoped he didn’t look like he’d agonised over what he was going to wear, before eventually deciding on a tee covered in colourful fish and some jeans.

He swallowed as he waited in a booth at the back, looking at the door and keeping his eyes out for Maxx. He was nervous, his leg bobbing under table and he tried to was glad there was an inch or so between his knee and the bottom of the table top, or he was sure that he’d be making his hot chocolate shake in his cup.

He wasn’t sure how long he’d waited before he saw him, though he was sure it wasn’t as long as he felt. Maxx looked much the same as he was when he last saw him, with his hair bleached blonde which had happened part way through the tour. He scanned the room and when he spotted him he smiled, before going to get a drink.

Again there was another wait and it made Awsten nervous but he tried to hide it, taking a sip of his drink.

Maxx jointed him, taking a seat and setting down his own steaming cup of coffee on front of him. “Hey.”

“Hey.” Awsten replied, biting his lip and there was a few moments of silence between them. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest and he tried his best to ignore it.

“I…” Maxx started, breaking the silence and running his fingers through his hair. “Look I’m sorry. I was a jerk and I…” He sighed softly, shaking his head slightly. “I think we should’ve had a proper conversation, about us, but there never seemed to be any time.”

“Yeah…” Awsten agreed with a nod, letting him continue.

“I never wanted to hurt you.” Maxx looked at him and he could see it in his eyes, how much he meant it. “I thought… well, I thought what we had was just gonna be a tour fling. That once it was over we’d go our separate ways, not seeing each other again until another Warped or… something.” He waved his hand as he said that. “It was Zach that said I was being an idiot. And I…. Wasn’t sure you’d even want to see me.”

“Of course I’d want to see you. You’ve been on my mind every day since the tour finished.” Every second, every minute, every hour more like, but he didn’t say that. “I thought about calling you, but it all seemed so… Final.”

Maxx nodded, taking a sip of his coffee before speaking again. “It doesn’t have to be. I mean, not if you want it to be.” He looked him in the eyes, looking hopeful, reaching his hand across the table for him.

Awsten swallowed and he reached for it, lacing their fingers together, a small smile on his face. “I’d like that.”

Maxx grinned, leaned across the table and they kissed. He tasted of the coffee he just drank, but Awsten found that he didn’t care, squeezing his hand. It was a brief kiss before they parted and smiled. Awsten felt like he was dazed, his heart still pounding. “I’m glad… I guess we should talk about how this is gonna work. If you want.”

Awsten nodded, butterflies in his stomach and he was sure that he was smiling wider than he had in a long time. “Yeah, I want.”
