New defence drones
So today was the new Doctor Who special, thoughts under the cut.
I had meant to do a rewatch of Resolution before the ep but never got round to it. The ep started with events from the end of that episode and showed just what happened to the remains of the Dalek casing. People had suspected that the ‘defence drones’ were based on that design and were proven right. (The ep did get pretty dark with the driver being killed and the truck stolen.)
Then there was the return of Robertson from the spider ep, showing he was behind the development of them, with the help of Leo (poor Leo, the brains behind the operation, he was so cute). I’d often wondered from the trailer why anyone would be ok with ‘defence drones’ having the power that regular daleks have and the ep answered that fairly quickly: that it was believed they only had water cannons, gas and a sound thing. Even so, having them deployed as widely as they were seemed a little odd.
Why does Britain in the Whoniverse keep having terrible PMs? First there’s the Master, then there was the one that was ok with giving those aliens children in Torchwood and now this one (I’m sure that there was another one that I missed). Pretty she died and thus didn’t face the consequences of oking the drones.
(As for the drones I actually liked the design and thought they were cool, so it was a shame they were all destroyed. Though it’s not surprising the daleks did, as they have form).
The Doctor being in prison was sad seeing her so broken, though that was quickly passed when she was freed (the fam may have waited months but she was in there for decades apparently). Though it was nice seeing some other aliens return as prisoners. Although it’s odd how there was no guards at all. But yay! Jack was there to rescue her! I’d assumed he was gonna show up on Earth first, o that was a surprise. (And yay Barrowman in the credits!)
It was sweet that the fam were waiting on the Doctor, especially Yaz and that they did investigate on there own, or try to. (I wonder if Graham and Ryan will show up in the series again, they could easily do that and I’m so glad they both survived)
Robertson is such a dick. How did he seem to escape blame so throughly like that? And why do people believe him? I get the feeling we’ve not seen the last of him,
It was nice to get references to past eps, like Jack becoming immortal (and Rose) and then Gwen Being mentioned right at the end. (Again I wonder if that’s a Torchwood set up, it’s a shame Jack didn’t stay for another trip.)
And those recon dalek mutants are so creepy, though the Doctor’s right, for mutants daleks are obsessed with purity and that’s a weakness (one that has been shown before).
The John Bishop reveal after the ep was only a slight surprise. I’d heard he’d been seen filming but assumed it was a one off role. Seems he’ll be a companion though!
Taskmaster was fun and I laughed so hard, though it made me wish there was a full season with them (though the trophy being just eyebrows was so fun!) I wonder if they’ll ever do more one off eps.
I’m currently watching Guardians Of The Galaxy which is one of my fave mcu films, because I just love sci fi stuff and it’s just so... fun. And then, if I’m not too tired I might get back on Valhalla.
